The Old Git's rant on the CT
Smowz
Yeah I have been doing this for some time and now my patience for cruddy teams are at an all time low Smile

So many apolegies for any offence caused - hoping to go for a bit more comedy than insult in the previews. Everything is meant to be a bit of light ribbing.

I will post as and when I have written these. Hopefully rattling off four or five at a time and then finally wrap it up with a rankings.

I'll admit before I start that when I had to build a team from scratch it was easier and I also did a fairly average job. So an average mid-table team is a good start!

Actavis:

The good: Plenty of climbing depth for this joint Swiss-Japanese venture. Morobito is the Red Bull alumni and certainly a dangerous rider at this level real gutsy rouler. Kuboki could be the surprise star a bit of a mini Van Stayen in that he climbs and sprints well - this guy can chrono like a beast too, will look to snatch those finishing time bonuses to good effect.

The Bad: Where is the non nationality star? No Colombian jack of all trades master of none Marentes is not it.

The Ugly:
It’s a simple climbing dual nationality team - should do okay but unlikely to startle. Solid start to the MG though. Lacks that marquee sort of rider.

AkzoNobel:

The Good: Nice cobbled duo in Eeckhout and Lindeman, plenty of experience through Seeldraeyer, Proni and Bontenackels. We all will enjoy cheering on obscure Mongolian sprinter Uugunbayer sort of sounds like their capital. Team should show up in nice results positions in a couple of races I think. Very decent TTT team as well with some real specialists such as Goldstein and Jorgenson bought in.

The Bad: Lack of depth in the climbing resources really and quite a few real nothing sort of riders, will need a lot of luck in breakaways and things like that. They also have Nob in their sponsors name and that cannot be good.

The Ugly:
No red Bull alumni - therefore not a team I can cheer for and likely not much to cheer. Just the faintest whiff of doggie doo doo or the dirt as The Rider puts it.

Alpina:

The Good: Second season in CT and strengthened after a brave but ultimately they were one south american climbing team too many. Gone for the climber swarm and yes a red bull alumni in Orozco boosts the stocks. He is one of four very good men for the mountains and Acevedo and Godoy are high quality hill climbers too. You add Colombian sprinter Forero to this and their appears to be a good chance of moving on up like Bonsucro and Nutresa famously did last year.

The Bad:
It probably isn’t easy but team still have some pretty ordinary youth prospects and the leaders are aging. Long term something may have to change next year. Not the year to reinvest in youth of course but perhaps the odd European could have been considered?

The Ugly: I think climbing teams can do well in the CT, we saw plenty finish high last year and this team have a very decent sprinter if utilised correct should see them in the top 10 somewhere.

Ayubowen:

Oops my mistake thought they were Ct by the looks of their crappy squad.

Belerusbank:

The Good: A few years on the block will help out in the planning, still has maintained the cult sprint hero Thorsen. Don’t be surprised to see him win harder stages then you would expect him too. In fact there are two other very fast men, yes this team will be one to watch in sprints as they have some great pilot fishes too. Need to avoid any sort of gradient though! Team does have Polonc for cobbles and sometimes forgotten Venezualan climber Ochoa.

The Bad: The sprinters are dangerously poor on the mountains and indeed back up stats all round are risky. It didn’t really work last year and this year can the formulas work out in their favour, you think it may not. pcm sprinter GC hate doesn’t help. Ochao and Polanc are not winners and could finish anywhere from fortunate 1st to unfortunate 20th. Not really that ambitious for a relegated team.

The Ugly: The Ugly: Sprint obsessed team will get some success but this team aint nothing special mid table at best. Need to give honest Smowz at Red Bull a call next year and grab some of that Red Bull alumni.

Carlsberg:

The Good: De Maar is as has been said a bit of a tough man, could be one of those underestimated type riders. Koep is a real gift from roturn, you wonder what it is bbl is doing to him behind the scenes. Rasmussen should be a nice enough sprinter, this team has the pretence of a good classics and flat lands team with guys like Ostergaard, Sabatini, Ranneries and Nielson just to name a few.

The Bad: Not really a big improvement and some of the riders are really making up the numbers, some riders were needlessly retained after too next to nothing last year. Team are obsessively high on Danes, unfortunately most haven’t got the Bacon.

The Ugly: Not really that good at enough type team, last year was a bit bland and I think this year they will do better but not that much. Keep at it though bbl you probably just need a few more star turns say a Red Bull rider for example Smile (I know I know you wished Juul Jenson in some ways I wish now I could have made that happen.

Chiquita:

The Good: With the demise of Wikipedia and Heineken a chasm opened up in the American market and riders end up being Minions! It is quite a decent bunch here with useful stage races Yasmani martinez and Chad Haga - neither are really youthful anymore and results will be expected. The team lack any real presence in sprints though have a nice enough hilly squad with Duggan, Selander and Kinney hardly standing out but could do better then people think.

The Bad: The four riders with 100K plus wage really do not look good value. Selander, Rathe and Haga in particular could be better if in the PT. Like a few retained CT managers too much allegience was given too some of their naff riders needed a bit more spring cleaning from the lazy minions.

The Ugly: An improvement on previous year but not by a great deal. Martinez is your solid GC top 10 guy, not really a winner though and that is what keeps a sponsors heart going the nice hope of wins which this team looks sadly lacking. Main problem though no red Bull alumni.

Compal:

The Good: Not one but two Red Bull alumni in Matthews and Sutton and in a remarkable turnaround there is almost no wasted space in the packed full of talent squad. Gilanipoor should come of age with some excellent Oceanic riders in Bauer, Matthews and Lowe this team have a vert decent squad. Bjartne has got real serious this year and this is one of the most improved efforts I have seen.

The Bad: I like this team a lot meaning I am predicting them high - so they will have that tag hanging over them.

The Ugly: Strong promotion contenders - very little messing about with talents. Lots of sprinters, climbers and even a great chrono man in Bauer. Very powerful CT team.

DeLaval - Kiitikori:

The Good: Extremely competent climbing team, a manager that should be applauded with a bold move for Anacona which balances the books. Snapping up a Red Bull alumni helps and Samoilev is a another decent guy if a bit of a whiffy wage, which Smowz must take the blame. Vastaranta and Sorenson are great climbers and Pokala has plenty for the time tests. I feel manager has scraped of the best of what he had as Live Nation and made a startling improvement. Rivals Compal for a real turnaround.

The Bad: Still that faint air of LiveNation utter cruddyness hang over the team a bit. Best climber in CT can be a bit of a curse too - Anacona has that heavy mantle to hang over his small frame.

The Ugly: This team feels like those South American climbing teams last year so you feel as if it could well be promotion success for deLaval. This marks a real leap frog from Atlantius, pleased for the guy actually he is a great asset to the game on a reporting side I think.

Elta - Hellenic:

The Good:
They are Greek, very Greek so this will please the OCD nationality boys. Unfortunately I am not among those but credit to manager for looking outside of Greece for leaders so that they will not entirely suck this year. Hill climber Ilias and sprinter Volikakis will likely have a good result here or there. Volikakis will need a slice of special Bos type stage which is short flat and not windy. Kulhavy and Rienda Segura are not really household names to me but a decent enough climbers who should be fun to follow.

The Bad: Lots of riders whose names end in …is and you feel will be scrambling around 100th place often this year. Nationality overload … must sign every half decent greek autopilot.

The Ugly: I guess it is nice to see a outside of the norm nation type team and there are few of these about in the CT - this can lead to generous offers (or sometimes exploitative offers) from higher up teams. Still will probably need to expand sphere of influence like the Greek empire of old to move out of bottom rungs. Yeah also old Red Bull alumni Tzortzakis would be handy Smile

Fablok - Dunlop:

The Good: Some really interesting riders here as team has intelligently nabbed a couple of good French sprinters along with some dangerous climbers in Berard, Fiellu, Lejman and Duresek. Plenty of scoring potential from this team I rate Drujon and Lavoines really highly as some of the better sprinters in the division. The team even have a pretty decent looking sprint train.

The Bad: Not really much to say here - Lejman is possibly the risky one with a Flat stat of 62 and sprint of 59 , he will have to be selective about classics and races he goes too. Having said that Di Maggio is a similiar if slightly better rider and he does pretty well.

The Ugly: Actually not too shabby at all and I think this team could be first year promoters. Good effort all round. Duresek counts for me a Red Bull alumni love those sorts of all sorts riders you always feel he has a chance.

Fox Sports:

The Good: Haven’t been heering goo things about this team and I scan down and I see a strange miss mash of riders. Steegmans, Davis and De Vocht is nice to see them given one last year in leadership roles and yes I do think they can do something. Daspuntsag seemed to be showing that fighting spirit at tour Down Under.

The Bad: I don’t really mind the liquorice allsorts of nationalities but it seems as if this team have overpaid for some of the leaders. A top cobbler is not really the way to go - they just don’t get high points yeilds. De Vocht is one of the best cobblers in the division but cobbled races can be a bit random in the CT.

The Ugly: Yeah I have to agree one for the dirty area really. Could be a fun team to cheer.

Fred Whitton Race team:

The Good: A couple of red Bull alumni here in Dani Moreno and Sebright and both are leaders here in their own way which is very welcome. Cam Meyer is the big star and yes a very nice sprinter who can chrono. I like that this team initially wanting to be British adapted and came up for air with quite a nice outfit. Ndbri is a bit of a MG icon (you know some guy who we never heard of in reality but has popped up with nice climbing results over the years). You always have to cheer for a guy with the unfortunate name of Tom Last too.

The Bad: The Brits have rubbish and should really be back in Blighty doing the crit rounds. All in on a sprinter is not really going to get you that high and where Meyer isn’t Fred Whitton will not be favourites.

The Ugly: Mid regions at best - hopefully upper mid region as Red Bull alumni should boost team.

Gatorade:

The Good: Yes Red Bull alumni present here in a real raiding type of team which lacks big favourites but has plenty of dangerous hill climber types. I will be very interested to see how this team goes really. Tyler Brandt should be a good diesal engine for them he was always fairly decent at Heineken. If this team can pick out a good schedule they could do okay.

The Bad: Yeah too much wage spent on the ‘leader’s Brandt and King and those sorts of wages should have got something with a bit more bang. There will be races where this team scores low points - it is just how many races.

The Ugly: I have feelings this team could do a bit better then they first look - I am imagining squeezing into top ten. It feels as if all the riders could have scoring potential apart from the two young Brits who should be fun to see level up.

General Kronas:

The Good: Rolland is a pretty nice leader for a team at this level. He is a guy we have all heard of and yes he has some legs being 29 and should be useful at PCt/CT level. He and Broaro is a pretty amazing pair of chrono guys at this level - yeah don’t ask me why Rolland is so good at chronos (and comparably rubbish on climbing) but he is in this alternate universe. Plenty of other climbers and hills men and even a good sprinter who isn’t useless on hills in Moser (again a bit different to the real life version). There is even a great cobbler in there for measure.

The Bad: I guess the only ‘bad’ thing is Moser wastes a year and will not gain any XP. Mind you he is one of those level 4’s who is already quite good.

The Ugly: Really really good first time effort - this manager is one to watch I think. No Red Bull alumni is the only problem - maybe I can claim to ‘unearthing’ Molard as one of my pre-season new rider recommendations. Just a great depth and no real wasted rider spaces alomst all the riders have a purpose. Big contenders for promotion.

In and out - the hokey pokey:

The Good: Second yearer’s who after financial problems last year have a team with nice depth this time. A couple of red Bull alumni in Aulas and Sonnery, I’ll be honest both were hardly a success with me and likewise I think these guys are fairly outside guys for success now. Have that second tier stage racer team feel about them Novak will certainly be up there with em all and Rosskopf is the Tour of America guy who must be wondering how many years he is doomed to thrash around this level. Team have a decent amount of fast finishers also.

The Bad: Rosskopf stuck at CT is a shame. Perhaps less excuseable for a second year team - I guess the trouble with guys like him is that they are already decent enough to score in CT and at 130K they are too expensive for a PCT loan out or as a PT domestique. Speaking of wages 140K is insane for rubbish beggar mans Van Stayen sprinter Sweetling.

The Ugly: Should slightly improve on last year but may still be short of power to go for automatic promotion and I think it would take a big hammer to whack em up. Could surprise if the stage racers perform well, I think there are few too many punchaers better than Gaimon this year for him to do well. Mid table.

Indosat - ANZ:

The Good: Two 78 MO guys shows once again that these CTers can have some ambition to nab really good climbers. 225K is a big wage but Atapuma could be the dominant force and his age means he could be useful to this team long term. Indosat have Signorini and Nieve as well along with very good all round sprinter Kroupis. I really like the way this team have built their domestiques around Indonesia but had the sense to widen their search to the global market for leaders.

The Bad: Another one of these lvl 4 XP 0 guys in Bayly - you see his wage at 75K and you think why? Rocchetti isn’t quite going to cut it as a hilly leader his fighter stat will likely be worthless as he will be too good for a breakaway guy.

The Ugly: Okay no red Bull alumni but certainly nabbed a rider I bid on this year in Kroupis. This shows a good eye for a sprinter who is just a bit more - Signorini will be one to follow - with the right sort of planning this team could be top 10.

Lierse:

The Good: Oldfart’s team of mainluy Belgium improvers actually had a very quiet transfer period adding decent sprinter Pelucchi. He should improve the squad which also see’s a lot of their other guys with improved all round stats. Peeters and Joseph should also score reasonably well.

The Bad: Very unambitious for me - they were not that great last year and have made only a minor step here. I am guessing they are looking at racing a higher volume of C1 races to XP up their guys and playing a long term game.

The Ugly: Okay Olly is here for the long haul the problem with having so many talents is that ultimately they need loaning out - there is just too much of that going on and not enough power up top. Peeters is a good sprinter as is Pelucchi but sprints are really hard to get right and not as reliable as say stage racers or hilly guys. Lower mid table at best for me.

Natty Norske Skog:

The Good: Okay I clicked to see how Norwegian this team would be but actually it is a big Polish team with a nice amount of hill polish. Zeits, Der, Stachowiak and old timer Sinkewitz really power this team who also have top Polish sprinter Sobata. Actually the MG CCC works for one of those high nationality teams once again because they have cleverly expanded their sphere of influence to nab some real leader types. Hills is always a nice scorer and Zeits is really really good I think who should conquer any potential MO-HILL confusion. Domagalski is a decent enough stage racer too.

The bad: Not a lot bad a very decently constructed CT team - just a little perhaps gung ho on the Poles.

The Ugly: It will be interesting to see another really good first time effort and one for a potential top 10. I like using hills as a focus in continentals as I did when I promoted to the PT so a big thumbs up from me.

Novatek:

The Good: Well last year were a really naff sprinters type outfit so the team really needed to bring in some climbing stuff and have a really good one in punchaer Rabon, but a slightly underwhelming Mountain double act in Sinelovov and Rudaskov. Still they have Serebriakov and Hochmann as the mountain hating sprint duo and they are still aiming at being the lowest tier version of Pokerstars.

The Bad: Were not that good last year and they have improved but not really by that much. Rabon is good the other new purchases not really.

The Ugly: Mid table. Serebriakov is still expensive and has a lot to deliver for his 250K wage. Rabon is the golden boy though - such good back stats to his Hill 76 so can really power on most routes. Sprinting can be a bit of a migs game though so probably mid table here.

OTP Bank - Slovakia:

The good: A pretty solid hilly classics squad from Slovakia/Hungary with Mezgec as a its big name finisher. Julien Simon is also the hill classics leader and is a pretty good one with a fast finish. Yeah I am beginning to see a nice theme here with the new managers building good solid competative teams built so that they can have a good season. This team will have its successes here and there certainly.

The Bad: Again lots spent for sprinter, that is pretty standard though so cannot really criticise - Mezgec should be good to creep over all terrain too. Simon and he have to carry the can a bit not sure the domestiques have quite enough about them.

The Ugly: Yeah another mid table type - well over the dirt I think and hope.

Rancor star wars Argentine team:

The Good: Richeze is a great sprinter for this level and real depth in the climbers with a Red Bull alumni. We all love Ian Butler too don’t we so what’s not to like.

The Bad: the big guns are all a bit old really - that is why Richeze was ‘only’ 200K from the free agency. Went for too many riders some of the guys down the list are a bit rubbish really Dario Diaz for example is very weak.

The Ugly: This team is really about Richeze who is possibly one of the top three sprinters in the divsion. The climbers are a little below par though - watching Tachira you can just see they aint going to cut it. Like most Belgians these days old Ian’s team will shine brightly briefly then fade into the background.

Seversetal - Mercator:

The Good: Sounds like a dinosaur from Jurassic World - it is the home though of the raptor of the hills Jose Mendes. The poor Portuguese has the honour of trying to prop up another CT season after last year enjoying the craic of the Irish he now goes with these eastern european lot. This team has built a bit for the future with som good ish level two guys and Jan Hirt who can improve I think at this level.

The Bad: Yeah bar Mendes it is a bit bland Kasa - Bole - Hirt is a bit like Castle Bullshit a building on shoddy foundations. Still Mendes is beast.

The Ugly: Mendes will be consistently high - may even really motor this team - behind him though this team is pretty poor. Bole should be okay I guess if you get the right parcour. I am think Mendes mid table.

Sodexo:

The Good: I have to laugh, Sodexo provide hospital food where my wife works and she says it’s the pits… so not even former Red Bull rider yes an alumni in Cherel and Turgot can save it.

The Bad: I feel as if this team have been built on real life reputation rather than actual MG stats. Turgot, Gallopin, Haddou, Quemeneur, Coyot - hey they are great French riders but unfortunetely they are not really any good here. This team should have checked current database certainly. Also way too many riders bought.

The Ugly: Yeah this team is in the low finishers unfortunately - fingers crossed Turgot and Cherel save them. yeah they also have a low XP lvl 4 guy in Gougeard in there too. This is becoming a theme!

Strava:

The Good: Can build a mass of statistics you feel will be looking into marginal gains. Four decent enough leaders in Corioni, Tennant, Favilli and Langeveld. There is actually a little known red Bull alumni in Belmokhtar who we shamelessly did not race in our opening season! Should do okay tried to hit on all but mountain terrain which can work in the Continental ranks.

The Bad: Tennant is the concern - the big chrono guy hasn’t always worked out in the last couple of years. Powerful cobbled squad just hope they don’t lose to breakaways.

The Ugly: I am wishing this team well. They have though through cobbles and sprints they also have guys for the hills though are a little underpowered there. Nice balance for me could be really up there.

Team Type 1:

The Good:
Most of the ‘team’ teams muppets are in the PCT but we have one here … erm this isn’t a really good team. Peterson and Barton are stage race top ten wheelsuckers.

The bad: 19 riders and 16 of em I wouldn’t touch with a barge pole. That includes the knight of the realm. Can someone tell me what was the point in signing Bauhaus and Strobel.

The Ugly: Sorry to say this team is not good - wish it well Type one was a team I followed in its real life time. The sprinters are not good enough and the stage racers are not good enough - I guess Wynants could score well on the cobbles. Even the youngsters are not really worth watching.

The Berk who based his team on Iceland:

The Good:
yeay look who has gone to iceland. This team even bought Bakari - what he is 60K wage good god Gabon must be corrupt. Right okay not quite the worst team in the division as Bagot and Vanderaerden can do well at times - Jorgenson is not too bad a sprinter.

The Bad: Yeah Bakari will not score anything - too many average Iceland guys bought in. You know six would have been enough to be impressed 11 was five too many for me.

The Ugly: Yeah near the bottom and deservedly so - 11 icelanders and Bakari yeah fun to watch a guess if you like that sort of thing.

Rankings prediction and yes it is bloody hard. I think top three should do well for certain. 4th to about 21st is really even really and then those at bottom end didn't quite get transfers right.

But most important think is to enjoy the racing - we have superb reporters and great routes and thanks all for playing and sorry for slightly harsh words. Wanted an honest report.
