The team is really doing their best Smile

There is nothing to do against a sagan in that form, unless your name is Boasson Hagen Wink

Shonak: It is really thrilling to see it change every time!
Het Nieuwsblad look fairly safe though...

Jakstar: They are and that's all we can ask of them.

VoetsT: True that
Perhaps they will be set up against each other in Beijing...

Tour of Beijing

I had some stuff to take care of in Europe (more about that later), so I didn't go to China with the team for the last race of the season.

I did follow the results though, so I'll just give you a quick run-through.

The team was a combination of whoever happened to be in shape combined with our two Finnish riders, who used it as preparation for their TT-NC.
That and the World Champion.

To recap Colnago, FDJ, Commonwealth Bank, Liquigas, OPQS and Euskaltel will all be looking to do a decent job to avoid relegation.

Edvald took the opening TT fairly easy with Rasmus on 4th place.

Stage 2 ended in a bunch sprint, which was won by the world’s best sprinter…

Stage 3 is usually the GC decider here and gave us a win for Andy Schleck, while Nibali took the GC lead making it very likely that he will pass Fuglsang in the WT-rankings.

Stage 5 was the most obvious bunch sprint looking at the profile and once again Edvald was beaten on the line by Farrar.

2 stages and 4th overall is decent Smile
Most teams would be very happy with that Smile

Shonak: Apparently Nibali and Schleck does...

Ian: Are you trying to belittle Eddy's two wins here? One in each jersey Wink

Matthew21rp: We are happy with Eddy's affort, but very annoyed that Nibali arrived in this kind of shape to grab the 1st place in the WT-rankings from Fruglsang in the last race...

Having gone through five seasons it seems like a good idea to stop up and look back on what happened along the way.

One thing is certain: This is a very different team than the one composed of other teams rejects back in early 2012 as only Jens-Erik Madsen and Jeppe Lykke Hartvig Nielsen remains on the team from then and the top names that year were Kjell Carlström and Magnus Bäckstedt - both brought back from retirement for the occasion.

It was a team built in a hurry with what we could find on such short notice. Nevertheless it was a team with big ambitions:

This team should bring cycling in Scandinavia to a whole new level. We want to establish a monopoly on national championships in Scandinavia, we want to become the worlds best cycling team - with all Scandinavian riders. And though we know it probably seems unlikely we would like to be the first professional cycling team with an Icelandic rider.
- The chairman of the board at the team announcement

The first win came sooner than expected when Kjell Carlström managed to take the win in GP di Lugano.
The season went on with wins in some of the early semi-classics as well as our first domestic win in Himmerland Rundt by Jebjerg.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/04-09-KlnNielsenattack_zpse8bde949.png
To our great surprise the results just kept coming as many of the other teams didn’t bother chasing when our riders attacked. That gave Michael Færk Christensen the chance to take GC wins in both Dunkerque and Bayern and suddenly we found us on a promotion spot without really having aimed for it.

That brought along a lot of thoughts as we knew we would get completely destroyed in the World Tour with this team. So we decided to try and see if we could attract a real top-rider – otherwise we would have to make sure not to score as many points in the final half of the season.

To our great surprise we managed to convince Thor Hushovd to join the team after a couple of disappointing seasons from him – he didn’t even ask for a relegation release clause even though promotion was far from secured when he signed!
With Hushovd on the team it became a lot easier to attract some good riders to give the team a fighting chance in the World Tour in the following season.

VoetsT
Very nice review of 2012 Grin

Matthew21rp
It was a very successful season considering the strength of the team Smile

Atlantius
VoetsT: Glad you like it as I will be posting a similar one for each of the five seasons the team have gone through Wink

Matthew21rp: It was. I still wonder how it led to promotion though...

The Hobbit
Very good summary so far, well done, and a nice idea.

Atlantius
The Hobbit: Thanks. I think a 5 year anniversary calls for it.

It'll be great looking back on 5 years Nordic Cycling, seeing how far the team has come Smile

Atlantius
Ian: I certainly hope so. It has certainly been a long journey to get where we are now!
