Nordic Cycling | Final Farewell
Atlantius
The Rider: Duarte is on paper the 2nd best climber in the world (After A. Schleck) and Antón has finished on the podium of the last 5 Giro's including 2 wins and on the podium in the last three Vueltas incl. two win so he is arguably the most succesful GT-rider of 2012-2016...

Giro d'Italia

Stage 21: Bergamo – Brescia

Far from a parade stage we want to both preserve the win, while also showing that it is decerved.

There’s plenty of attacking early on with youth jersey Edmondson being one of the most active.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-21-3_zps4f0663f2.jpgBeing the last stage of the race the break is not given as much gap as the previous days. Just under three minutes at the first pass of Monte Maddalena.

Hushovd and Rasmussen are being put to work on the downhill and flat sections.

Gasparotto goes solo on the second pass and on the top he has more than seven minutes to the peloton. Time to really start working.

The next time over the top he is the only one out front, but the gap remains around seven minutes.

Next time across Gasparotto has 2’50’’ to Brambilla and a further 40 seconds to the peloton.

Things go as planned and with 3,5 km to the top the final time it’s the big names battling for the win.

Henao attacks and no one seem to have the energy to go after him.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-21-8_zps6821324b.jpgJakob leads the chase on the last few km and enters the descent alone with Antón and Duarte while Henao is still 42 seconds ahead with 12 km to the finish line.

Chavez sees his GC 4th go down the drain with 7,5 km to go.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-21-10_zps8dfbacc4.jpg
Henao holds on to take the stage win while the GC top 3 sprint for second place.
A sprint ending in the same order as the GC.

45 riders missed the time limit on the final stage, but none of our riders.

I have to say we didn't expect a win of this size, but we were lucky to avoid accidents and really bad days from Jakob - in contrast to the closest competitors.

Of course a mountain top win would have looked good, but we are proud of Fuglsangs performance nonetheless!

May Edition

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/rankings_zpsf5c9908d.jpg

Rider of the Month: Igor Antón, Cofidis le credit en ligne. The UCI decided that winning two jerseys and 5 stages was more impressive than Fuglsang outsmarting the best climbers in the Giro. Of course he did get a spot in the history books alongside Moser and Saronni for most points jersey wins (4).
Nordic Rider of the Month:Jakob Fuglsang, Novo Nordisk – SAS. Winning the GC and four stages (incl. the TTT) really makes a good month from the CT-riders obsolete when it comes to this award.

Atlantius, Manager of Novo Nordisk – SAS

Congratulations on your splendid Giro win giving you an even bigger lead in the rankings. It seems your team has reached a new all-time high.
It has. And that’s the purpose – always getting stronger. Jakob has had an amazing season ash as many of the other riders. No we hope to be able to continue the run for the rest of the season perhaps getting us our first Velo d’Or winner and another GT-podium?

How do you see the team continuing from here? It’s hard to see much more development...
First of all both our sponsors are still on board which is very nice. Second we still haven’t won Ronde van Vlaanderan, an Ardennes Classic, the Tour or the Vuelta so there’s plenty of new targets for us to aim at.

I think it’s safe to say that the team has achieved much more already than expected when you were part of founding it back in early 2012. And I dare say not many had expected Fuglsang to become a double Giro-winner.
Well, Jakob is a late bloomer and with a cleaner peloton we have a more level playing field than 10 years ago.

So where do you go from here?
Onwards and Upwards I suppose...

Novo Nordisk – SAS have announced the signing of 20-year old Martin Nielsen from August. Nielsen was 6th in this year’s Ronde van Vlaanderen Espoirs and his signing should be seen in the view of Hushovd retiring leaving an open spot in the cobbles squad. A problem that only gets worse for the team after Kristoff have announced that he will be looking for offers elsewhere.

Duarte still haven’t renewed with Vacansoleil and now Liquigas has made public that they want the Colombian. That has resulted in Pozzovivo announcing that he wants to leave.

Kennaugh have announced that he will be leaving Statoil – Stoerensoe as he wants a stronger team.

Omega Pharma – QuickStep wasn’t able to make Sep Vanmacke a good enough offer, so he will be leaving. Winning Omloop and finishing 9th in Paris – Roubaix should give him plenty of other options…

Apparently being the 3rd best rider in the rankings is not enough to get a decent offer from Belisol so Kreuziger will be looking for a new team.

Reading that interview, it's true. In this story, you've come a long way Shock

Shonak
Great ride by Jakob & the entire team. Cheers!

I suppose Antón's title as rider of the month is understandable, yet Fuglsang's performance seems to be underrated by the UCI. After all he won with quite a comfortable lead, the Team kept the pink jersey all the way to Brescia and I'm pretty sure he'd won even it wasn't for the cbs-stage to Rome, although this tactic certainly helped a lot. Very smart riding indeed. He (and the team) have definitely come a long way. Overall, he always seemed to be in control of things and this is definitely one of the hardest tasks of a leader in a Grand Tour to pull off, to always stay in control.

Ian: We have. And two riders have even managed to stay on the team going from 20 unemployed riders to top of the world!

Shonak: It would have been very hard without the cobbles, but I would certainly have tried every way I could think of Wink

sutty: ...And that shows on how the other teams behave when we try to get in a break Frown

welker: Still possible, though Statoil is actually only 3rd best CT team in the CQ-ranking. Het Nieuwsblad should lose terrain in the last half of the season, but we'll see what happens...

Jylland Rundt

It might not be a very prestigious race, but we really like it so we have brought both Hushovd and McDermott hoping for some good results.

Stage 1: Aalborg – Aalborgi1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/06-02-Jyll-1-1_zps0fe4ef77.jpg
While chasing a sprint finish for Thor a huge crash split things apart. Only Nokkvason was affected from our team, but fortunately he is able to continue the race, so he should still be ready to start the Tour.
Ian Stannard and three other riders never got back on their bikes.

The finale turned very chaotic and Thor was boxed in.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/06-02-Jyll-1-2_zps6dafb2f6.jpg
The same didn’t happen to his leadout Ludvigsson though…
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/06-02-Jyll-1-3_zpscc3f7f1c.jpg

Hushovd and Ludvigsson gets separated by some slow riders leaving the front and that completely disrupts the sprint leaving an easy win for Vinther.

Ludvigssons mediocre form shows today, but Laengen and Tonning both do very well.

The first of the two cobbled-stages. Ending on the same roads where Erik rode as a child he is determined to do well.

Several decent cobblers tried to get away early, so the guys were put to work right from the start.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/06-02-Jyll-5-2_zps0deb756a.jpg
Jens Erik Madsen shelled of the front more or less by accident on the first cobbled sections and we allowed him to see how far he could get it as he is joined by a few decent Danish CT-cobblers and Elmiger.

Unfortunately Jens Erik isn’t able to keep up with the four others in the long run, so it's time for McDermott to get nasty.

Hushovd helps him away, but the last 20 km Erik is alone in the chase.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/06-02-Jyll-5-3_zps5a33688d.jpg
And McDermott gives the locals what they want by tearing things apart on the flat cobbles and even outsprinting Berling to win on home soil.

Behind Vinther disappoints by not really doing anything and Erik looks on his way to a much more dominant win than expected considering a startlist with Vinther and Stannard.

A good bunch of riders including Nokkvason and Jesús Hernandez decide to quit the race after this stage.

A stage with slightly more cobbles than stage 5 going around on the roads Erik rode as a youngster.

Again today Erik and Thor tore things apart as soon as they started working. But today they relaxed a bit more in order to give the fans a duel between the two Danish top-cobblers of the season.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/06-02-Jyll-6-2_zps9412bfb4.jpg
And that allowed Vinther to wheelsuck and beat Erik in the sprint.

A nice race nonetheless ending with Erik taking the GC.
