Rest Day Press Conference, Novo Nordisk - SAS

We'll start with the questions to the team manager and then moving on to Fuglsang and Tonning.

What do you think about the team's performance so far in this Giro?
With the Maglia Rosa on the team it can’t be all bad…
Fuglsang has been great, but so has especially Bøchman and Tonning in helping him not waste energy.

Of course it’s not too good that we have already lost both Quaade and Bak, but they did what they came for: Helping us win the TTT. Kristoff might have disappointed in the sprints, but he has been a great helper on the flats as have Rasmussen and Hushovd.

To be honest Kessiakoff have been a bit disappointing. In many ways he looks like he just can’t be bothered to dig all the way to the bottom.

Is it about what you expected of it?
All together I’d say being the only team to hold the pink jersey this far into the race is much more than I expected.

How do you see Tonnings performance? He seems to be doing extremely well at a very young age!
Agreed. I actually see him as the strongest young rider here. In spite of working hard he has been the first finisher in the U25 category in several stages. He has earned a shot at the youth classification in another race for sure!

Jakob, you seem well on your way to win the Giro. No disrespect, but the only competitor for you is Anton, do you fear him?
I only have a 23-second gap and hadn’t it been for the cobbles he would be five minutes ahead. Fear is a strong word, but I will certainly have to ride a strong TT tomorrow if I want to keep him behind fro the rest of the race!

The whole of Denmark is watching your every move at this moment. What would you like to say to the young Danish fans crazy about cycling?
Don’t do drugs is always good advice.

Apart from that I’d recommend them to get on the road. It doesn’t really matter if you can’t afford an expensive racing bike at first. I personally started on mountain bike and McDermott did all his young years on a fairly heavy bike. Having to pull more kg’s in training just make you that bit stronger.

Tobias: It's only your second professional year as a cyclist but you are more than surviving here at the Giro. Are you afraid of the third, tough week?
Mostly I’m afraid if I’ll be able to walk when I come home!
With a 50 km TT, three mountain stages and a hard hilly stage to finish it will be extremely hard, but I’m also extremely motivated to help Jakob win again, no matter how deep I have to dig. After all how many riders can say they have never ridden a GT without the team winning the GC?

How do you feel about having to work all the time, when many says that you would have had a real shot at the youth classification this year?
That’s how I learn. In the first week I was nowhere near where I am now. I know I will get my chances later on and perhaps things look different in next year's Giro…

Giro d'Italia

Stage 16: Pavia – Milano (ITT)
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-16-1_zps03cad5ea.jpg
To put it simple: This is the day where Fuglsang has to shine to win the Giro!

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-16-2_zps70c8551c.jpg
Cancellara makes sure to set a decent reference time early on the day.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-16-3_zpsd4bdc772.jpg
He is no match for the World Champion though!
Alex is more than a minute faster than Spartacus.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-16-4_zps27aed92c.jpg
I dare say everyone was more than surprised when Farrar clocked in a time only 2 seconds slower than Rasmussen!
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-16-5_zps397af131.jpg
Alex is beaten first by Biondo and then his former team mate Juul-Jensen.

Fuglsang is very strong today and passes by Antón with 7 km to go.

Meanwhile Castroviejo has utterly destroyed all previous times.

In the end Alex really paid the price for working so hard for Fuglsang the last two weeks.

A flat stage on paper, but we might try and see if that hill can be used for something…
Also we haven’t forgotten the day last year when Fuglsang won half a minute on a flat stage. We need to really shake the oppositions confidence before the final mountain stages!

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-17-2_zpsbed6e753.jpg
The best scenario for us today would be a strong break lasting all the way. Hushovd tries to get in it, but that was too much for the other teams.
In the end 12 riders lead by Cancellara get away.

With 100 km the gap is seven minutes.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-17-3_zpse24d206b.jpg
It looks like the sprinter teams have this under control. 50 km and 4 minutes.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-17-4_zps0f301864.jpg
As soon as the climb begins we send Bøchman and Kessiakoff to the front hoping to shake the sprinters. The break still holds just over a minutes gap.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-17-5_zpsa8080f01.jpg
The peloton is drawn very long over the hills and the sprinters are banished from the front.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-17-6_zps8cdb265b.jpg
With 7,5 km to go and in the crazy chase of the break Ulissi goes down right in front of Duarte and Pozzovivo.

Duarte avoided him but Pozzovivo was pulled down.

Fuglsang was safe ahead and didn’t realize what happened in the hectic finish so they continued the plan.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-17-7_zps8571b412.jpg
Jakob attacks on the 5 km mark as planned before the stage. Still not knowing about the crash since he always removes the radio from his ear to reduce stress in the finale.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-17-8_zps3e3cddef.jpg
He holds on to take the stage win right after we hear that Kristoff is one of many riders taken out of the race after their injuries.

Alexander was the biggest name to abandon.
The race organizers didn’t award any time differences behind Fuglsang or between the main groups. But a stage win and 20 bonus seconds (8 on Antón) is always nice either way…

It looks like your words of encouragement worked. At least we now have good buffer before the final stages.

Two great stages, a couple stages left and 4 minutes to defend on Anton, this is definitely possible!

But what the hell Farrar in the TT? Pfft

Ian: Possible, but not certain if Antón keep increasing his form in the mountains...
And yes, Farrar riding that fast withou the TT-stats to back it up right after a rest day does make one think Wink

Jakstar: Thanks for the cheer!

welker: It most certainly was.

sutty: He did, though losing Kristoff in deed wasn't part of the plan. Extra work for Hushovd and Rasmussen then...

Miguel: But will he?

Giro d'Italia

Stage 18: Vicenza – Cortina d’Ampezzo
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-18-1_zps66122ba3.jpg
Let’s just say that other riders have higher goals for this stage than Jakob…
Also it will be interesting to see if any of the competition is still affected by the crash.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-18-2_zps27003322.jpg
As usual on these days we let the break get away. Lowe and Klimov are the best climbers in there.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-18-3_zps2167d4be.jpg
Liquigas doesn’t quite agree with us though…

The break has just over three minutes on the top of the first climb.

At the foot of the second climb that is down to 1’30’’
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-18-4_zpsd85a4bf6.jpg
Fuglsang is well protected while Liquigas continue doing all the work.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-18-5_zpsd4841bba.jpg
Tonning gets a puncture on the climb and as he struggles to get back to the main group Pozzovivo falls off the back!
Guess he took a harder fall in the crash yesterday than first anticipated.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-18-6_zps44fa4314.jpg
The break is caught and Antón sticks to Fuglsangs wheel all the way up the mountain. 37 riders left in the group and Pozzovivo is falling further and further behind.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-18-7_zpsb1c96b9d.jpg
Atapuma and Henao attacks on the penultimate climb and Antón goes after them.

Fuglsang puts Kessiakoff to work in the main group.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-18-8_zps046a8027.jpg
Right as Kessiakoff burns out Cataldo attacks and Fuglsang takes his wheel to the Antón group.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-18-9_zps901e0c04.jpg
Igor leads over the summit with Fuglsang looking really strong today. 15 riders remain in the group.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-18-10_zps6ca69fd7.jpg
Atapuma opens the attacking on the final climb. Since he is 16 minutes down we’re not too bothered about that.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-18-11_zpsf0a4d030.jpg
Antón attacks with 6 km to the top and right after him goes Duarte.
Fuglsang can’t do anything else than limiting his losses.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-18-12_zpsd88a0d4f.jpg
There will be partying in the streets of Colombia tonight as Duarte takes the stage ahead of Chavez and Henao.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-18-13_zps558d41d3.jpg
Fuglsang makes a solid effort and Antón seems to be running out of steam after an impressive Giro so far.

Youth jersey Txoperena leads the grupetto up the final climb more than 1 hour after Duarte. That saves the peloton but not the 12 riders lost further behind.

Atlantius
Giro d'Italia

Stage 19: Selva di Val Gardena – Livigno
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-19-1_zpsf7a3f9a4.jpg
This stage is very open with the downhill finish, but still some very hard mountains and the last summit very close to the finish line.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-19-2_zpsb2461767.jpg
As usual we let the break go without any remarks. They have almost 15 minutes at the start of the climb up Passo dello Stevio. Klimov, Bulgac and Mantecón are the best climbers in the group on paper and Finetto is the best placed in the GC 2h21 behind.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-19-3_zps514d257f.jpg
Nothing really happens in the peloton on Stelvio so we sent Hushovd and Rasmussen (yes, Alex made it over Stelvio with the favourites!) to the front on the peloton to make this a little less embarrassing for everyone.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-19-4_zps199c04c9.jpg
On the penultimate climb Pinot is told to put on the pressure, so we decide to trust Cofidis and let Duarte attack all he wants for now.

With the breakaway pretty much secured of the stage win things are relatively calm between the favourites until the last km of the climb.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-19-5_zps993917dd.jpg
Duarte crosses the summit half a minute before Antón and Fuglsang.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-19-6_zps09887961.jpg
The three are alone together with 2 km to the top of the final climb and 9,5 km to the finish line.

The stage win on the other hand will be decided between Klimov and Mantecón.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-19-7_zps80a4a69d.jpg
Klimov gets a deserved stage win after having been in the break many times in this race.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-19-8_zpsa093d893.jpg
Jakob decides to challenge the competition with 600 m to the top of the final hill.

He can’t get rid of them though, but at least we are one day closer to Brescia.

We expect fireworks today. It’s a very hard stage and I’d expect Duarte and Antón haven’t stopped trying to win the Giro yet…

Riesenbeek is the strongest climber in the early break today. They have a gap of 6’17’’ when the first climb really starts.

Surprisingly that expands to almost 14 minutes on top of the climb.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-20-3_zps1d8776b0.jpg
Rasmussen and Hushovd do a good bit of work on the descent, but at the foot of the second climb Movistar take the lead again

When we reach that summit Riesenbeek is alone in front with almost 19 minutes ahead. If he continues like this we might get a deserved winner of the white jersey after all.

Atapuma, De Weert and Jackson Rodriguez join up with the Dutchman on the penultimate climb and we have to start working on reducing the gap so that Atapuma doesn’t get out of control.

So Kessiakoff and Pinot get to share the workload.

Riesebeek cracks and he is back with the favourites on the penultimate summit.
Atapuma & Co. have 10’30’’ which is ok by us.

Good thing as Jakob is now alone in the 16-rider main group.

The gap remains constant towards the final climb.

Fuglsang really want to prove on the mountains that it is not by pure coincidence that he has the pink jersey. With 7 km to the line he is putting on the pressure.

Jakob's pace takes the edge of the attacks when Duarte and Antón tries to move and things are looking good before the final hilly stage.
