Nordic Cycling | Final Farewell
Ian Butler
Wow, the final TT will be quite decisive Grin

sutty68
The TT should be exciting now Smile

Atlantius
Both: Stage 5 are probably the hardest of a race, but with downhill/flat the last 20 km odds are that everything will be decided on the TT.
That is definetely better for Fuglsang than most of the other guys, but the question is how much time Albasini will lose since the route is far from flat...

Right now, I can't imagine anyone taking the GC win from Fuglsang. Not sure about Kreuziger's TT abilities in your story but I think Fuglsang should be stronger (although Kreuziger won the prologue, hmmm), plus the form definitely speaks for him. This will be definitely close.

Shonak: Let's hope you're right. On paper Fuglsang is the best TT'er, but the TT is hilly as are stage 5 and on paper Kreuziger is stronger on hills. And with some great Ardennes-results he has proved that he is on shape as well...

Tour de Romandie

Stage 5: Bulle – Sion
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-24-Roman-5-1_zpsa3d5c940.jpg
In a race without summit finished this is the closest we get to a crucial stage. On paper not the worst scene for Fuglsang to shine.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-24-Roman-5-2_zps9ad56e34.jpg
With Astana protecting their jersey and us trying to make the race hard it wasn’t the best of conditions for the early breakaway attempts.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-24-Roman-5-3_zps0bcacec0.jpg
Fuglsang himself took the lead on the first descent and at the bottom we had a peloton of 119 riders and no breakaway.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-24-Roman-5-4_zps7dae24cd.jpg
For some really weird reason Kelderman decides to attack early on the flat section. Fine by us as he will hopefully be tired when hitting the mountains then and plenty of other teams are willing to do the work in the peloton. He is joined by Rabottini and Tiernan-Locke.

The front trio has 4’30’’ on the peloton at the start of the climb.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-24-Roman-5-5_zpse7365c5e.jpg
Bøchman and Santander does a great job pulling towards the final climb, but Kelderman manages to keep his advantage close to four minutes.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-24-Roman-5-6_zps346c5396.jpg
At the start of the descent the Dutchman hold on to a 2 minute gap in spite of a frantic chase behind.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-24-Roman-5-7_zps35e83713.jpg
So Fuglsang tries to take advantage of his great downhill skills.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-24-Roman-5-8_zpsa8a7bed6.jpg
He reduces Wilco’s gap and even gets a small gap on the other favourites.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-24-Roman-5-9_zps694fc440.jpg
Until the last 700 m that is…

That puts Kelderman 4 seconds short of the GC, while Kreuziger is back in front of Fuglsang with one second while also taking the points jersey.

Stage 6: Crans-Montana (ITT)
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-24-Roman-6-1_zps93ce957d.jpg
A hard TT to decide the final GC. Fuglsang will be aiming for a great result and the odd chance of still taking the final win or perhaps regaining the points jersey.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-24-Roman-6-2_zps88908c15.jpg
Quaade sets best time early on in spite of the hard route. He is even 4 seconds faster than the World Champion today.

Kessiakoff just manages to squeeze in ahead of Durbridge proving that this is not an ordinary TT.

The Swede is beaten several times, but then Bøchman takes back the lead to our team. It really is a difficult route for the riders to administer their energy on.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-24-Roman-6-3_zps7da28c71.jpg
Fuglang is determined to do well when he sets off.

He destroys Pozzovivo’s time at the intermediate. 16 seconds faster than Kreuziger, 51 seconds faster than Kelderman and 1’20’’ faster than Albasini. That puts Jakob in the provisional lead with 7 km to go!
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/04-24-Roman-6-4_zps8444e24c.jpg
In finish Jakob is 49 seconds faster than Domagalski on 2nd.

Now we can just wait for the final three riders to come in.

Ian: Well, the Giro will be the firat WT-race featuring proper mountains this year, so it will be exciting to see what happens...

SSJ2Luigi: In deed. Kelderman looks like he's going to dominate the young riders competitions this season.

admir: Thanks, will do Wink

April Edition

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/rankings_zpsf5c9908d.jpg

Rider of the Month: Roman Kreuziger, Belisol. Three Ardennes top 10s including a win with equally strong results in Pais Vasco and Romandie makes this a well-deserved award.
Nordic Rider of the Month: Erik Meineche McDermott, Novo Nordisk – SAS. There has been several good results this month, but nothing beats a 23-year old winning Paris – Roubaix in a grand solo effort.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/interview_zps83367276.jpg

Erik Meineche McDermott, Novo Nordisk – SAS

First of all can you run us through what happened in your head when you were alone on the velodrome?
My whole life pretty much.
I got my first bike on my 2 years birthday, but was only allowed to ride on the more or less abandoned country roads, which conincidentally are the same ones they use in Jylland Rundt now. Them when I was 6 I saw for the first time Paris – Roubaix on TV. Mapei dominated the race finishing on the three first places and I remember thinking that it was weird no one else wanted to win such a beautiful race.

Ever since then I have played that I rode towards the Velodrome against the big classics riders like Museeuw and Rolf Sørensen (who finished 6th in 1998, red.) and later Boonen and Cancellara.
So you can imagine that it was a dream come true this year. Something I have dreamt about and worked towards for 17 years!

Let’s just have a quick run-through of your career wins this far: Ikea Cup Nybygget (2014), Jylland Rundt incl. the two cobbled stage (2015) and Paris – Roubaix. One of those kind of sticks out a bit…
Hehe, you could say that!
The deal is that I generally need a lot of cobbles, as flat a terrain as possible and preferably a long route. And then the competition has to hit a bad day in order for me to get rid of them before the finish as I haven’t really worked that much on my sprinting skills yet. That is for the future along with getting better on the hills so I can compete for the win in more than one WT-race in a season.

There has been a lot of criticism about you on exactly that: You are considered a very one-sided rider, but your team manager have always supported you saying since you were an amateur back in 2012 that you was going to be the first Danish Paris – Roubaix winner. Do you feel you have proved you critics wrong now?
I don’t have a need to prove anything to those people as long as I can make the manager happy. And he says that if I can podium Paris – Roubaix every year and then work hard on all the other days that’s fine by him.
I suppose that most people would agree that having Roubaix as the only win in a season would still make a pretty decent season…

That was an awesome time trial from Jakob in Switzerland and totally deserves his place at the top of the rankings Grin

Ian Butler
Have you thought about making a Nordic WT race for next year? Or just bump one up (Tour of Denmark, possibly?)

Atlantius
Ian: We hope so. He should be able to develope in most of his supporting stats still. Time will tell if it's enough to battle for RvV as well...

sutty: He has in deed had an amazing early season. Going into the Giro as defending champion and on top of the WT-ranking is a very unique situation!

Ian2: I have thought about it, but haven't quite agreed. I fear that the hilly stage in Tour of Denmark will be less selective as it should be with a stronger peloton. At least that's what seemed to happen when I edited some stronger teams in last year...

Gig 'em Aggies

Fast N' Loud Cycling Project - ICL

Atlantius
Giro d'Italia

The Route

Starts with 19 km TTT
2 Flat ITT’s (Total 74 km)
1 Mountain ITT (18 km)
6 Flat Stages
3 Medium Mountain Stages, 2 finishing uphill
1 Cobbled Medium Mountain Stage
7 Mountain Stages, 4 summit finishes

The Favourites

On paper Duarte should destroy everyone on the mountains, but his shape is a big question as we haven’t really seen him this season. Antón, Pinot and Atapuma are three other strong bids for the mountains. They are all pretty bad at TT’ing though and that could turn out to be a huge problem in this Giro.

Of the sub-top climbers defending champion Jakob Fuglsang and Kevin de Weert are the best TT’ers. On top of that Fuglsang has been training all spring to improve his abilities on the cobbles and he should be able to gain some time on some of the downhill finishes as well.

All-in-all this will be an exciting race where all the favourites have an obvious weakness for the others to exploit.

The Sprinters:

With 6 stages looking like a bunch sprint we have a strong field of sprinters this year. Farrar, Keukeleire and Cavendish will be looking to challenge home favourite Appolonio while Rüdiger Selig will make his debut against the really big names. For Novo Nordisk - SAS Kristoff will get his chance against the big boys with support from Hushovd and Rasmussen.

Stage 1: Palermo – Palermo (TTT)

We have selected our roster highly with this stage in mind. With Rasmussen and Quaade spearheading the team we should be able to do some real damage early on!

Astana with Spanish champion Castroviejo and Colombian Champion Suarez are one of the team the bookmakers expect to challenge us. And as expected they set a strong time right from the start.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/05-05-Giro-1-3_zpsf71d60ce.jpg
Fuglsang has a strong team around him for this discipline and the guys beat Astana fairly comfortably in finish.
Spoiler
Actually I only started the stage to take the pics and then I quit to quick-sim as I really didn't feel like racing it properly
