Stage 3: Unley - Victor Harbor

Looks like we’ll be riding for Eddy today with this profile.

Veikkanen gets to be our man in the break today.

Jussi is very well-liked in the group and everyone backs off at the top of the hill to give him the KOM.

Commonwealth Bank – GreenEdge does all the work in the peloton, but that doesn’t stop the break from holding on to a five minute lead with 50 km to go. Veikkanen is the by far best placed rider in the GC up there only 10 seconds behind.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-TdU-3-5_zps0a9170fb.jpg
With 22 km to go the gap is down to two minutes, so Veikkanen decides to up the effort.

He can’t get rid of the others, but it breaks the peloton and with 15 km to the line the gap is back to 3 minutes and Jussi looks like the new race leader!

Meanwhile the chase gets even more disrupted by a massive crash started by Nissan. Fortunately all my guys are near the front so they avoid any harm.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-TdU-3-7_zps56d83591.jpg
Since Jussi was the only rider within 2 minutes of the GC lead in the break I told him to focus on keeping the break going rather than saving himself for a potential (but unlikely) stage win.
So he put in a massive effort to keep the gap.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-TdU-3-8_zpsa78ff940.jpg
Cepeda opens the sprint and Jussi grabs his wheel.

He tries to follow the second wave as well, but is too tired to put in a great sprint.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-TdU-3-9_zps907ddb17.jpg
Langeveld is the freshest while a lot of riders are close for 2nd place.

Everyone on the team was thrilled to see Jussi take the GC lead by more than two minutes to the closest competition.
There was no young riders among the 12 in the break so Riis even gets to keep the young riders jersey!

Stage 4: Norwood - Tanunda
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-TdU-4-1_zps639ab5e1.jpg
Today will be about defending Veikkanens lead today.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-TdU-4-2_zpsfa28f5cf.jpg
A good team effort keeps the break close enough to not threaten the GC.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-TdU-4-3_zps03006715.jpg
Commonwealth Bank came to the front to chase the bunch sprint towards the end.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-TdU-4-4_zps449b1ff4.jpg
They were to late to catch the break though
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-TdU-4-5_zps56b68c32.jpg
Mission accomplished for us as Veikkanen finishes safely inside the peloton 37 seconds later to defend his jersey.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-TdU-5-1_zps11bf8d75.jpg
Everyone expected this to be the day the GC got decided, but we will be in the defense of Jussi, who should be able to keep the lead.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-TdU-5-2_zpsd9cf28e0.jpg
Obviously it was our job to control the breakaway today.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-TdU-5-3_zps4a853aef.jpg
We kept everything under control and the peloton in one piece when we hit Old Willunga Hill for the first time.

Tiernan-Locke and Bewley attacks on the first pass of the hill.

Chris Anker keeps things together for Jussi, but it costs a lot of energy for the team.

There’s plenty of attacking, but my guys do an amazing job to keep everything together for the final sprint, thus securing the GC for Veikkanen.

With 1 km to go it’s Luis Leon Sanchez ahead of Sconamiglio and Lloyd with Chris and Edvald pressing on from behind and Jussi hanging on to the front group.

With the GC fairly safe we will try to set up Edvald for a stage win today

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-Tdu-6-3_zps3b39a08c.jpg
A good few riders try to get away, but with 5 teams chasing from the start they never stood much chance

For the last 60 km though we were alone to chase and we couldn’t match the strong breakway riders while still protecting Jussi and Riis.

Luckily none of the breakway riders were even close to being a GC threat.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-Tdu-6-4_zpsab2ad27a.jpg

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/01-10-Tdu-6-5_zpsfb978bdc.jpg
Nevertheless we continued practicing our sprint train and Edvald won the pelotons sprint after good work by the whole team.

Things didn't quite go as we had planned originally as we never expected a break to last the way it did.

Of course protecting the lead costed a bit when it came to chasing stage wins, but this just goes to show the amazing team spirit we have. Everyone is ready to sacrifice his own chances if a team mate has a better chance!

Two jerseys and the team classification is really an amazing way to kick off the season...

Great win for Veikkanen. What a start of the season.

Great start of the season with a win! Grin

Miguel: Yeah, was very surprised when the peloton gave up on stage 3 and just handed it too him!

MrUfo: Couldn't agree more Wink

A good start to the season but surprisingly no wins for EBH!!! but still a great effort. Good job with the GC and KOM wins!!!!!!! Grin

Atlantius
Jakstar: Yeah, we'll have to practice our sprint train a bit more so I have decided to go to Tour of Qatar for the first time this year. It did cost a bit defending the GC in terms of preparation and energy with only 7 riders. EBH will surely get his wins later this season - this will probably be the only GC Jussi wins though...

Grand Prix la Marsaillaise

Throughout the day it was Cofidis and Rabobank leading the peloton against a number of different breakaways. With us being on the breakaway team off course.

Many groups got away, but the most important break was when Kessiakoff broke free alone on the biggest climb of the day. With 20 km to go he held about two minutes to the peloton.

He was caught with 8 km to go by a peloton containing only 30 riders. Both Breschel and Kristoff still in there looking good for the final sprint.

The final of the late attacks wasn’t caught before the last km, but Ipsen worked hard to reel them in and Breschel provided Kristoff with a perfect leadout

It was only right on the line that Alexander pushed by Matti giving us an impressive 1-2 with the Champions of Norway and the World.

January Edition

Rider of the Month: Jussi Veikkanen, Novo Nordisk – SAS.
Nordic Rider of the Month: Jussi Veikkanen, Novo Nordisk – SAS. Jussi managed to be more stubbern than the chasing peloton on a flat stage thus building the foundations to take the GC win in the first WT-race of the year. Taking chances and fighting for them even when things look to be over is what cycling is all about and Veikkanen proved that better than anyone this month.

Jussi Veikkanen, Novo Nordisk - SAS

No offense but that was a massive surprise you winning Tour Down Under! Did you know you could do it?
None taken. I came to the race as a domestique to work for Chris and Edvald on the key stages. Luckily being a domestique on this team means that you get to chase breakaways as long as we haven't got any jerseys to defend...

That is lucky in deed, but you're evading the question: Did you know you had it in you?
Off course. After all it's not my first win - not even my first WT-win.
Back in 2012 I won Tour of Beijing when my team at the time needed a GC win to survive on the World Tour, so I knew that under the right circumstances I could make it. And everyone on this team is there to help when we have a chance to win. No matter what the status before the race.

Sounds like an amazing place to work. Now you're on top of the first World Tour rankings what are your goals for the rest of the season?
I want to stay there!

haha...Just kidding! This was a lucky strike. I hope to get a few more good results over the season, but as for the rankings I just want the team to be on top when the season is over.

Nissan has announced that they will stop sponsoring one of the most successful teams over the last couple of seasons.

One of the oldest sponsors on the peloton Movistar have decided to stop their engagement as of next season.

Colnago - CSF Inox will have to find a new main sponsor for next season as Colnago is pulling out.

DanCake Classic

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/02-04-DanCake-_zps61e17b08.jpg
A cobbled race to open the Danish season. Usually we wouldn’t prioritize a race like this very high, but Matti really wanted to show the Rainbow jersey in his home country already early on the season.

Apart from Matti wanting to do well we had a lot of guys only here to build form for Tour of Oman in a few weeks, so we decided to make sure the local fans would see a battle between the absolute elite by making the race hard.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/02-04-DanCake-1_zpsc3d35946.jpg
Going into the final 100 km 53 riders remained in the front group.
Saxo and Statoil joined in on the mission and with 15 km to go only the 27 strongest riders remained with Breschel, Lander and Aistrup still in the front group and heavily cheered by the home audience.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/2016%20Novo-SAS/02-04-DanCake-2_zps150b8197.jpg
Matti went solo on the final pass of the cobbled section and rode the last 8 km alone.
This is exactly what the fans came out in the rain to see!

Tour of Qatar

We went to Qatar to practice our sprint train, getting used to the warmth and building shape for Oman.

We couldn’t match the ISD – Ferrari train on the first stage.

In spite of not having brought a lot of TT-specialists the team won the short Team Time Trial on stage 2 (simmed).

The leadout worked much better on stage 3, but that still didn’t prevent Cavendish from taking another win.

On stage 4 the leadout really started to look right. Cavendish took another win, but this time only by the width of a rim.

We came to learn and practice and on stage 5 Edvald was delivered perfectly by Breschel and Kristoff to take a superior stage win.

The last stage finish was a bit chaotic due to some small hills and a lot of crashes. Everything went perfectly for us until Cavendish’s leadout man blocked Edvald and made him lose a lot of positions.

All in all we have learnt a valuable lesson on how to structure our sprints, while the strong Team Time Trial pretty much destroyed the GC for everyone else...
