Preview

This years Tour de France consists of
48 km of flat TT’ing (2 stages)
1 Mountain TT (Alpe d’Huez)
9 Flat stages
3 Hilly stages (1 uphill finish)
6 Mountain stages (5 Summit finishes)

So there is a fair amount of stages for the sprinters and a lot of very good ooppotunitires for the climbers with legendary mountains as Ventoux, Alpe d’Huez and Tourmalet on the menu.

The Favourites

This race is truly a feast for the climbers, and several of the worlds best climbers have come to France. Andy Schlek and Fabio Duarte being the best pure climbers – both of them are even looking to sign a new contract based on their performance in this race.
Gesink and Nibali are another pair of strong climbers, but these two can TT as well so they just have to avoid losing too much time to Schleck and Duarte on the summit finishes.
Other names worth mentioning counts Pinot, Sicard, Hesjdal, Basso and Ipsen.

The Sprinters

With 9 flat stages there is a lot to fight for among the sprinters this year and all the top sprinters have decided to come. Edvald Boasson Hagen has a declared goal to win the green jersey, but Kittel, Cavendish, Sagan, Farrar, Goss, Greipel etc. will surely not let him take it without contention!

The Young Ones

Volvo – SAS has declared that Willy Ipsen has come here going for the white jersey. He will have to beat Herrada, who took the youth classification in Dauphiné and the French hope Pinot.
Since both Pinot and Ipsen should be given leadership by their teams it could be a very interesting battle!

Stage 1: Roubaix (ITT)

We’ll start of with a short TT/long prologue going over some of the cobbles used in Paris – Roubaix and finishing on the Velodrome.

Terpstra can handle both TT’ing and cobbles reasonably well, so his early time will be a reference point for the favourites.

Peter Velits demonstrates that good TT-skills can be sufficient on the course as he sets new best time.

His teammate and fellow countryman Peter Sagen is decent at both and beats Velits’ time by 20 seconds.

Boonen loves this stretch of road and is motivated enough to beat Sagan by a second.

When there’s cobbles on the menu Cancellara is a favourite.
When there’s TT’ing Cancellara is a favourite.
And he lives up to the expectations beating Boonen by 12 seconds.

Edvald is another good bet for today – even though the picknickers have left before he starts…

They shouldn’t have as Edvald cuts another six seconds of the best time!

Since none of the favourites can match the specialists Edvald gets a stage win and at least one day in yellow along with 20 pts for the green jersey.

Luis Leon Sanchez: They do have a lot of strong TT'ers. As for GC's Gesink is the top man (he just won Dauphiné), but both Kelderman and Kruijswijk have developed nicely as well. Lets just say that their current 3rd place on the WT-rankings is not a surprise...

The first big test for our new sprint train.

On a day like this it is our job to be in front of the peloton keeping the break within reach and Cort, Stevenson and Ludvigsson does a great job at that!

The chase gets a bit closer than we would have liked, but with 8 km to go the breakaway is history.

Nissan has the edge going into the sprint as Kristoff got a bit too far behind to be there for the train. At least Hushovd is present to prepare the leadout for Edvald.

Going under la flame rouge Eddy is the 4th best placed sprinter.

400 m Edvald is right behind Sagan while Farrar and Boonen are side by side on the other side of the road.

Jakstar: A perfect prologue, but a very disappointing sprint in stage 3...

Miguel: Certainly not a speciality of mine. We lack the big engine to pull hard on the front before the sprint. We burn out all nut the three sprinters chasing the break, so we'll have to change tactics a bit.

welker: I wouldn't say that. Most of the big names are actually behind him!

Luis Leon Sanchez: Pretty much all of them actually. I think they're pretty much within a minute or so of each other so it's not so dramatic.

sutty: He has, but so has especially Sagan, so it looks like it'll be a hard battle for green...

Luis Leon Sanchez: My aim is white and green.
How that amounts to GC and stage wins are yet to be seen. Obviously stage wins help, but if I have a small lead in the points and Sagan keeps beating me in the sprint I might forfeit the chance for a stage win to keep Sagan from taking the big points. For the GC I will mainly be looking at the other contenders for white and see where that places me in the end.
Duarte has 84, Kruijswijk 80 and Sanchez 77 (81 TT).
