April Edition

Rider of the Month: Damiano Cunego, Nissan. The Italian won País Vasco and Amstel while finishing in top 10 in both Romandie and the other two Ardennes classics. That way conquering the 1st place on the World Tour.
Nordic rider of the month: Niki Østergaard, TDC – LRØ Rådgivning. Niki impressed everyone by winning two stages and the GC in presidential Tour of Turkey, thus finally making his big breakthrough at age 27.

Congratulaions Niki! This last month you managed to outshine the WT-stars. How does that feel?
Well-earned! I have worked really hard to get at the level I knew I could, with good support from a team focused on letting Danish talents develop without any pressure. A big thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Skelde for letting me take it in my own speed – the great results this last month is as much theirs as mine!

Does this mean that you will now be going to a WT-team?
Not right now. I have a contract going through next year, but of course I have talked to the local WT-teams.
Volvo – SAS quickly made clear that they didn’t think it was a perfect match with me on their team as I was too old to develop into a future world-beater. So if I’m going to the WT- it will probably have to be on Team Saxo – Tinkoff, but for now I’m happy where I am.

But doesn’t it tempt you going for a chance to ride WT-races?
Of course it would be great to ride the big races, but chances are I won’t win the Tour de France any time soon and then perhaps it’s better to win a few more races on CT-level earning a wage increase that way instead of being another mediocre helper in the big races.

Astana have made public that they want Romain Sicard, who has developed into a top-class climber at Euskaltel, but still lacks a big result on his palmares.

After some good results for Colombia it seems Fränk Schleck might be heading back to the WT next season as both Selle Italia and Movistar are rumoured to be chasing the climber.

This years route is a repetition of the 2010-edition of the race, which was won by Ivan Basso.
It contains:
56,2 km Individual Time Trial (3 stages)
32,5 km Team Time Trial (1 stage)
8 Flat stages
3 Hilly stages with no uphill finishes
6 Mountain stages with 5 summit finishes

The Climbers

Quintana, Antón and Kelderman seem to be the most feared trio on the mountain tops with riders like Sicard, Hesjedal, Basso, Kruijswijk, Atapuma and Henao ready to challenge them.
A common denominator between these riders is that TT’ing is not their favourite disciplines though Hesjedal and Sicard are better than the others at this discipline.

The TT’ers

On the other hand we have strong TT’ers like Cancellara, Rasmussen and Durbridge, who can’t climb and thus won’t affect the GC other than through the TTT.
We do have a few good TT’ers capable of climbing though. Fuglsang and Taaramäe being the most interesting.

The Sprinters

With 8 flat stages this could be one of the best GT’s for sprinters in a long time. In spite of that the absolute biggest sprint favourites have decided not to come. That makes for a good opportunity for Farrar, Appolonio, JJ Haedo and Greipel.

The Young Ones

A lot of rider can compete for the young riders jersey in the first week or so. After that only Quintana and Kelderman are serious contenders.

Stage 1: Amsterdam (ITT)
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-1-1_zps8cf0b331.jpg
Since the Giro has a TTT we have brought a lot of good TT’ers, who we expect to see put in some good results today.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-1-2_zps4ac3d3e5.jpg
We have specially high hopes for the Danish champion Alex Rasmussen today and he does set best time even though it’s still early on the day.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-1-3_zpsed2a4695.jpg
Tiago Machado is a bit of a prologue specialist and he shows so by beating Alex with 2 seconds.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-1-4_zps3393e3c0.jpg
That is the exact same time as Cancellara.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-1-5_zps80b50a3b.jpg
Italian champion Biondo is highly motivated to grab the pink jersey in his home GT. So he cuts two seconds of Machados time.

All in all a good effort from mu guys with Fuglsang finishing 11th and us leading the team classifications and Quaade in the youth jersey.

Stage 2: Amsterdam – Utrecht
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-2-1_zps1eb9f14f.jpg
Riding in the Netherlands means big possibilities for a bunch sprint, which again means a day without ambitions for us.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-2-2_zps39516926.jpg
Still Bak decides to go in the early break chasing the mountain jersey – and succeeds placing 2nd on the first sprint and winning the second.

When the gap was biggest the break had 8’30’’, but the sprinters teams always had them under control.

Commonwealth Bank – GreenEdge does most of the work all day, but with 15 km to go we decide to go to the front an help to avoid getting caught in the rear.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-2-3_zps1a1c341a.jpg
And a good choice only 64 riders are in front when the feared crash happens less than a km later.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-2-4_zpsf1d357e5.jpg
Lead out trains are not really a speciality of ours, but since most trains except a tired Commonwealth Bank disappeared in the crash I told Gustav and Lasse to try placing Alex Rasmussen in a good position for the sprint. And Gustav responds with creating a small gap to the rest of the peloton.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-2-5_zps232b6983.jpg
This is one weird sprint with Bøchman leading out Rasmussen competing with Moreno.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-2-7_zpsc6025f0c.jpg
A surprising win for Alex while Basso, Quintana, Kelderman and Hesjedal lost just over three minutes.

We know people will blaim us for not neutralizing the stage after the crash, but that is racing. We went to the front because we could feel the tension in the peloton and didn’t want to lose our GC already today. It's not our fault that some GC favourites weren't aware in a dangerous situation.
We obviously happy that everyone seems ok after the crash.

Stage 3: Amsterdam – Middelburg
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-3-1_zps575133c0.jpg
Even flatter than yesterday…

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-3-2_zpsa9deb24c.jpg
Plenty of teams wanted to protect our jerseys for us today, so we had a fairly quiet start to the day even though no break managed to get away.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-3-3_zps42f598df.jpg
As yesterday the high speed going into the finish resulted in a mass crash, and once again all my guys are safe.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-3-4_zps403f13db.jpg
Once again a great effort as the team moves Alex to the front going into the last 3 km.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-3-5_zpsa2ee3254.jpg
In contrast to yesterday both Nissan and Selle Italia have intact trains to launch their sprinters making it a battle between Guardini and Farrar.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-05-Giro-3-6_zps0764344a.jpg
Alex can’t blend in in the front, while Farrar is the by far strongest today also stealing the pink jersey from Alex.

Todays crash cost five riders their participation in the race. No big names, but at this point only 50 riders have avoided losing time due to flat stage crashes. Mainly our team, Urán, Antón, Sicard and Henao. That goes to show how important it is for the climbers to have a strong team supporting them to keep them out of trouble.

Oh my Shock

what a great Giro so far!

Team doing great so far. Keep it going Grin

Fulglsang must take advantage of this.

Ian: A highly surprising stage for Alex, but we come well prepared for the early stages as well!

Jakstar: Thanks, will do my best

Miguel: It's certainly a great advantage to already have several minutes on some of the better climbers - the time might be needed when we hit the mountain...
Later today I will post a rest-day post including an update of how the favourites are placed at the moment

Great result by Rasmussen, winning the stage which crosses my hometown! Cool

Jesleyh: Wilco needs you to cheer for him after the crash Wink

Marcovdw: It was probably the most massive crash I have seen on PCM as it pretty much a whole line across the road that ended up stopping everyone behind. An expensive day for some...

Giro Restday

The giro has the rest-day early, but that gives us time to catch up on how the crashes has affected the GC-riders and how the preperations for Amgen Tour of California is going.

Giro GC Status

The first three days of the Giro became much more dramatic than expected. We’ll just have a quick view on the status between the pre-race favourites

5 Jours de Dunkerque

Warm up for Amgen Tour of California means all-out attacking every day…

Johann Nokkvason went in the break on the first day hoping to get the mountain jersey thus being the first Icelandic rider on an UCI-podium. Unfortunately IKEA’s Lars Andesson didn’t quite agree with that plan…
The last bits of the break was caught about 100 m after the finish line, but Johann got tired before that.

On the second stage no one was ever allowed a big gap, but in the end the sprinter teams couldn’t secure the bunch sprint they wanted and Willy Ipsen took a nice 2nd on the stage.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/05-04-5jours-2_zpsae70da4c.jpg
Stage three was another attack at the mountain jersey for Nokkvason. A hard ride for him, but he managed to get in the virtual jersey with one KOM to go. He fought with all he had, but had to see Smukulis take the jersey on the final hill of the day.

Stage 4 in this race is the most decisive for the GC as it’s full of cobbled hills. Our team here doesn’t like cobbles, so I told them before the race to take it easy and make sure they didn’t injure themselves. In the end no one seems to want to make it a hard stage, so Jussi tok full advantage of the experience from riding a full cobbles-season this year and finished a surprising 3rd on the stage.

On the final stage Johann gave it one last go, but had to realize that he has to wait a bit longer to write history.
The final became very hectic on the wet roads and all my guys made sure to keep out of danger. Unfortunately that cost Veikkanen a top 10 finish.

Stage Results

Stage 1: Demaret (Alstom) / Bille / Gaudin
Stage 2: García (Cofidis) / Ipsen / Rathe
Stage 3: Casar (Orange) / Levarlet / Bissinger
Stage 4: Vermote (Dirk Grepdon...) / Minard / Veikkanen
Stage 5: Rathe (Garmin) / Lima / Hivert
