Nordic Cycling | Final Farewell
Atlantius
VoetsT: I'm afraid that's probably impossible considering Jeppe ans Jespers TT-skills...

Ian: Terrible name? A bit long I guess, but terrible??

welker3257: In deed a surprisingly good stage by him. Hopefullly he'll be ablt to hang on to the youth jersey.

Stage 5: Al Jissah (ITT)
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-14-Oman-51_zps36dbedc4.jpg
This is indeed going to be an extremely important stage, where Jeppe and Jesper will have much to lose…

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-14-Oman-52_zpsdf8f970c.jpg
Brajkovic haven’t delivered in terms of the GC, but he looks to be setting a good time today.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-14-Oman-53_zps33b3509f.jpg
Quaade is our hope for today. The hill in the start is not his favourite thing, but he rides his way into the race on the final flat/downhill section.

He gives it everything he’s got, but is 15 seconds slower than Brajkovic.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-14-Oman-54_zps2fdd233c.jpg
Richie Porte is another of the disappointments in this race – and he stays that way finishing a provisional 5th today.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-14-Oman-55_zpsdc9ce58c.jpg
Finally a rider able to challenge Brajkovic. Boom sets new best time.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-14-Oman-56_zps1988944b.jpg
Cancellara seems to be getting in form for the cobbled classics as he completely destroys the competition today.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-14-Oman-57_zpsa48e0776.jpg
Gesink almost manages to catch Jesper Hansen before the finish. That is so fast that the Dutchman gets new best time and makes a real assault on the GC.

Stage 6: Quarayyat – Mattrah Seafronti1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-14-Oman-61_zps98a666ef.jpg
This stage has bunch sprint written all over it.

I don’t think anyone expected anything but a bunch sprint from the morning but that didn’t stop Ludvigsson and 10 other riders from going in the break.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-14-Oman-62_zps3e620408.jpg
After quite a long struggle they build a gap of 6 minutes with 70 km to go.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-14-Oman-63_zps71746f57.jpg
The only ones chasing the break is Vacansoleil and they only have two guys on the job. Still they close in on the break and with 22 km to go the gap is down to 1’47’’

As hoped the Vacansoleil riders start getting tired and they can’t quite finish the job – or they are only interested in protecting Deveyns’ GC lead…
13 km to the line and the 11 has 2’18’’. This could very well be one for the break!

In a sprint from this group the favourites has to be Trussov and Arashiro. Riders like Tobias, Morten Høberg and Gorka Izagirre could have a good chance as well if they have fresher legs.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-14-Oman-64_zpsb62781a2.jpg
Oroz opens the sprint hoping to lead out Izagirre, while Tobias loses a few places and ends up 4th last in the group at the start of the sprint.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-14-Oman-65_zps0e34efc3.jpg
1,2 km to the line and Høberg is doing a brilliant leadout for Ludvigsson.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-14-Oman-67_zps086ae541.jpg
Unfortunately Tobias doesn’t have enough power left in the legs to go past the Dane.
The biggest day in Høbergs career without a doubt!

Still a 2nd on the stage is a good result for Tobias – especially since it puts us in the lead of the team competition!

On one hand it was disappointing that the boys lost so much time on the TT on the other hand a 10th place, the youth jersey and the team competition isn't all that bad...

Small Race Summary

Tour de Langkawi

Our first time racing in Malaysia. We will be looking to get the team in shape for Tirreno – Adriattico while Jesper will be chasing a good GC position – after all there’s no TT in this race…

The first couple of stages went fairly quiet for us as Matti isn’t quit fit to sprint yet – after all this is the his first race of the season.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-24-Langkawi-3_zps83dbc008.jpg
Things changed on stage 3 though where Rasmus Sterebo took a splendid solo win attacking out of a break with the peloton coming fast from behind.
Sterebo was just the rider, who wanted it the most that day!

On the first mountain stage (stage 4) the entire team was dedicated to setting up Jesper. He does well to keep in the game and ready for the next mountain stage, which should suit him even better.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-24-Langkawi-5_zps522d9b9e.jpg
And so be it. On stage five finishing on a mountain top the team makes it a very hard day – and with an uphill finish Jesper is in his right environment and takes the stage win!

Stage Results
Stage 1: Biondo (Selle Italia) / Juodovalkis / Finetto
Stage 2: Traksel (Shimano) / Finetto / Schorn
Stage 3: Sterebo (Volvo) / Ojavee / Lacombe

Le Samyn

Another form-builder. With Boasson-Hagen, Hushovd and McDermott on the roster everyone expect us to do well in a cobbled race, but none of the above are really that fit yet and the cobbles-part of this race are usually not that decisive...

It was a hard day for a break to get a good gap, so in stead we went to the front doing a lot of work setting to make the other riders tired.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/02-28-Samyn_zps1f8f14d6.jpg
Thor attacked on the last cobbles-section and none of the Belgian CT-teams can respond to that.
Thor might not be as young as he used to be, but he certainly hasn’t forgotten how to win!

As mentioned our first time there. For a team spending most of it's time on Europe those Asian countries can get really confusing Wink

February Edition

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/rankings_zpsf5c9908d.jpg

Rider of the Month: Marcel Kittel, Rabobank. Complete and utter domination in Qatar while winning the points jersey and a stage in Oman really made the German sprinter stand out this last month.
Nordic rider of the month: Jesper Hansen, Volvo – SAS. Victory in Giro della Calabria along with a stage win, a GC 10th in Mallorca was followed up by a disappointing Tour of Oman, but the young Dane has come back strongly winning the Queen stage of Langkawi and being placed a provisional 4th at this moment.

Jesper Hansen, Volvo – SAS

Congratulations on the first actual win in your career. How does it feel?
Of course it’s nice to win a GC for the first time, but I count the mountain jerseys in Tirreno 2013 and youth jerseys in races like Tour de Suisse, Catalunya and Tour de France as wins as well – even though they doesn’t give any World Tour points. To be honest wearing white on the podium in Paris was a bit more thrilling than winning the GC in Giro della Calabria.

I understand that. Still it is thrilling for all of your fans (myself included) to finally get to see you be the first rider to cross the line first. That said I think I can say that a lot of us was disappointed with your result in Oman. You seemed in great shape both before and after – what happened?
I was feeling rather ok, but the mountain stage wasn’t quite hard enough for our tactic to have effect. We sent out Jeppe to try and make some of the other favourites tired, while I saved myself for the lasthalf of he climb. But the mountain was just too short and I didn’t want to end up chasing Jeppe.
He is a good friend and deserved that stage podium!

You are currently ranked 4th in Tour de Langkawi, but the GC is very close. Is it realistic to see you move up?
Well all the stages left are completely flat, so it’s not really my terrain. That said we have a few ideas that I won’t tell here as we hope to surprise the competition.

Exiting! What then after Langkawi?
I will be riding Tirreno – Adriatico in a free role while the sponsors have told the team to focus on Paris – Nice. After that I will start preparing for Vuelta a España which is the GT best suited for me this year.

Surprisingly two of the World Tour sponsors announced this month that they will stop their sponsorships. It is the British Vodafone and the American Garmin.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/transfer_zpsdf01994d.jpg

Lars Ytting Bak has announced that this season will be his last. At this point it is unknown what the future brings for the big Dane.

A lot of high-profile riders will be looking for a new contract next season. Vodafone have declared that they want Fabian Cancellara on their team, Garmin wants Cavendish and Colombia have set their eyes on Ryder Hesjedal.

Small Race Summary

Le Tour de Langkawi, part 2

To advance Jesper Hansen in the last part of the race we had to be creative as Malaysia had run out of mountains.
So we tried keeping the peloton together for Jesper to break away and take some seconds on the intermediate sprints.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/03-01-Langkawi-last_zps6cd5e6a1.jpg
We succeeded in getting Hansen up to 2nd through bonus seconds, but the overall victory was just too far away.

On the final stage Nicki went in a break, which quickly transformed into a solo effort as no one really wanted to help Selle Italia chase him. Unfortuately the stage was 7 km too long to keep away the sprinters…

Bornholm Rundt

The final warm-up for Paris – Nice will for a large part be on the Danish island Bornholm. The Island is known for its hilly terrain, which should make for some good racing with a flat stage, a hilly stage and a short TT.

On the first stage we failed to take the break serious enough in time to reel them back in and they won a lot of time.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/03-01-Bornholm_zps950f7dc2.jpg
On the second stage we had both Fuglsang, Bøchman, Riis and last Boasson Hagen in breakaways. In the end Eddy took the stage win, but didn’t gain enough time to affect the GC much.

Paris - Nice

The sponsors want us to chase a stage win and that is what we’ll do while hoping that Edvald and Fuglsang can ride a good GC as well.

Stage 1: Houdan – Houdan
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/03-04-ParisNice-11_zps07ae77da.jpg
Today looks like a certain sprinters stage. We will aim to get a rider in the early break – just in case while the rest of the team will be dedicated to Eddy.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/03-04-ParisNice-12_zps76c93bce.jpg
It takes a lot of effort, but in the end 14 riders are allowed a gap. Among them Lars Bak.
With 100 km to go the gap is 5 minutes and growing
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/03-04-ParisNice-13_zps68306e2c.jpg
With 50 km to go Rabobank and Astana has brought the gap down to 2’30’’
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2015%20Volvo%20Sas/03-04-ParisNice-14_zps72b9f390.jpg
As expected it is a sprint, where Vacansoleil demonstrates a very strong train. Further back Eddy has been delivered decently and Hushovd is ready to start the leadout.

Hushovd is not in top-shape, so with 1,5 km to go Edvald goes past him chasing Van Avermaet and Vinther.

Our Norwegian star does well considering that he is not quite in perfect shape yet.
