 Vuelta a España The Route
This years Vuelta consists of
2 flat TT’s (52 km)
1 Mountain TT (13 km)
4 flat stages
7 hilly stages, 2 of these with an uphill finish
7 mountain stages, 5 of these with an uphill finish
The Favourites
The above all favourite has to be Igor Antón and with the support of Poels, Nieve and Landa he has the by far strongest climbing team to support him in his quest for a second GT this season. The big question is if he will get punished for riding his second GT in the third week.
In the second row there’s a lot of riders with similar climbing capabilities. Cobo will be hoping to repeat his 2011 win and Rodríguez will be determined to defend his win from last year. Both of them have to realize though that younger riders like Ascani, Masciarelli Cataldo and our own Chris Anker Sørensen will be looking to push the old kings away from the throne. All in all a very open race, which along with the route bodes for an exciting three weeks of racing!Stage 1: Cadice (ITT)
This stage is just on that we need to be over with for us, so we’ll keep it short.
Tony Martin is the only rider, who have beaten Cancellara on a timetrial this year, and he’s not here…
Surprisingly Chris in the second Danish captain to go out on the route as Saxo Tinkoff has given Anders Lund the 1 on his back.

Vuelta a España Stage 2: San Fernando – Ronda
We’re off to a hard start. No slowly finding your legs in this race!
The stage kept crashing when opening, so I had to quick-sim. Quite a good result 6th for Chris Anker Sørensen though.

Stage 3: Ronda – Antequera
Another hard hilly day…
Having not only the main favourite, but having him in the lead already means that Euskaltel get to start working right from the start.
With 50 km to go it looks like Gasparotto and Hermans will be deciding the stage between them. The duo has more than eight minutes on the peloton.
30 km. Every Euskaltel rider except Antón are working in front of the 59-rider peloton. My guys are sitting right behind them!
17 km to the line, 12 of these downhill. The break still holds 4’19’’ but now the favourites start moving. Rodríguez attacks and is followed by Ulissi. I told my guys to stay calm and let Euskaltel continue their work.
3 km to the top for Chris and Antón. Purito and Ulissi has 36 seconds to Weening and a further 17 seconds to the 18-rider group with the rest of the favourites.
2 km to the top of the last hill. Antón makes his move and Chris is right in his wheel.
Going in to the last 7 km of the stage chances look slim for Gasparotto now alone in front. 18 seconds to Hermans, Purito and Ulissi and an additional 18 seconds to Chris, Antón, Ascani, Cobo and Weening.
With 5 km to go 18 riders are united in front.
Chris can’t sprint so with 2,5 km to the line he tries to attack, but Rodríguez is right in his wheel.
He doesn’t get much of a gap but 2nd after Purito is very nice as well!
17 riders missed the time limit. Most prominently Guarnieri, Napolitano, JJ Haedo and Cantwell.

Vuelta a España Stage 4: Antequera – Granada
Probably the easiest stage this far (apart from the prologue)
Looking at the profile this stage had all the marks of a breakaway success. So Lars Bak went out there and with 75 km he holds 12’06’’ along with Tsatevich, Van de Walle, Belletti, Riblon, Lund and Lowe.
It is a certain win for the break, but also a certain win for Belletti if it comes down to a sprint finish.
With 15 km to go Riblon makes the first attack and gets Lars and Tsatevich with him.
With 8 km to go they’re caught by Belletti and Van de Walle. Time for more attacks to get rid of the Italian…
Lars is the only one able to actually build a small gap and he goes under the red flame alone with about 15 seconds down to the others.
And there it is. Our first Vuelta stage win ever!

Stage 5: Granada – La Pandera
First mountain top finish. Things are starting to get serious…
Euskaltel keeps everything together early on, so when we close in on the first KOM Nicki decides to go for it. Right on the line he is passed by Palomares, who also chased the jersey (and held it for a long time) last year.
Meanwhile Euskaltels hard pace has reduced the peloton to 105 riders. We have Haavardsholm lost behind, but are otherwise intact.
With 67 km to the line Euskaltel is still intact in front of the peloton. 9 riders have a gap of 4’04’’
When starting the final climb Hoogerland, Pujol, Palomares, Masciarelli, Gustov and Rebellin hold 4 minutes on the peloton.
10 km to the finish line. Palomares has left his breakaway companions to take the final KOM of the day. He has 3’30’’ down to Euskaltel & Co.
Several riders are staring to move in the favourites group, but while Antón still has four helpers in the front we’re not going anywhere! There’s a thin line between bravery and stupidity – and we’re not going to cross it…
Masciarelli and Palomares going in to the last 5 km side by side. 1’39’’ to Hoogerland and Pujol, who has one minute to the favourites.
3 km to the top for the favourites. Euskaltel seems to finally have weakened and this is the moment to attack if we are to surprise Antón – and so be it!
The attacks weren’t very successful though as Nieve is still enough to reel in most of the challengers here…
So with 2 km to the top Antón is off. Chris is right in his wheel! They have about two minutes to the front riders.
Purito have managed to slip away and takes the stage win.
Chris can’t quite keep up with Antón but does manage to distance quite a few of the other favourites.

Ian: He does and he is a bit of an expert on this kind of stages. It's similar to his Giro-win IRL and his Tour-win last year in the story. But he is in great shape in deed!

PCM rulezz: Thanks. Time will tell, but he might. Antón is on a level above everyone else and then there's 10-15 riders with similar climbing skills, so it will be close and every second could be important in the end. Anything from 2nd to 15th is realistic...
sutty: He does. It is his big season goal, so he is fit and haven't got too many race days yet. Hopefullt he can keep it up.
dienblad: Thanks. It's a mean as route (only four stages categorized as flat), so it's a balance between being ready the first week and not getting tired in the third week...

Vuelta a España Stage 6: Cordoba – Valdepenas de Jaen
Another interesting stage, where almost anything can happen except for a bunch sprint...
We send Nicki in the break. Not only chasing the possible stage win, but also very much chasing mountain points.
He wins the first three KOM’s without contention picking up 18 points.
Going in to the last 100 km the break holds a gap of 9’30’’ to the peloton, where Lotto and Garmin have decided to do the work for Euskaltel.
Crossing the last categorized climb of the day the peloton have minimized the gap to three minutes, but Nicki is not satisfied and attacks to take the 10 points at the top and see if the break can be revived.
Final 25 km. The break holds just over two minutes to the peloton now lead by Euskaltel.
Two km from the top Rodríguez have pulled away once again followed by Vanendert and Antón.
Chris was looking good but got boxed in by slower riders when the attack occurred.
1 km from the top he puts in a solid attack to regain some of the lost time.
He can’t get away from his group, but pulls it up to the front group, so it’s not all lost.
3 km to the line. 24 riders in the front group with Gilbert looking strong in the rainbow jersey.
A massive final sprint gets Vanendert the stage win, while Chris is just too tired after the chase to do anything in the last km.

Stage 7: Baza – Murcia
The closest thing we have been to a flat stage this far in the race. The big question is how the sprinter teams are feeling and how the hill will affect things. We’re not looking for a bunch sprint at least…
One of these days where pretty much the entire peloton wants to get in the break, thus making it impossible to build a good lead due to the constant attacking.
With 22 km to the finish line Veikkanen and 12 others hold two minutes on the peloton.
There’s several sprinter-types in the break so right before the hill Jussi attacks and gets away alone. The Finn crosses the top 1’31’’ ahead of the peloton, which in the mean time have been reduced to only 34 riders.
Vanendert, Purito and Antón decides to attack on the descent and Chris is right in their wheel not having to do any work since he has Jussi out ahead.
Going in to the final 5 km Veikkanen has just under a minute to the followers and 1’30’’ to the closest large group, but he is getting tired.
Right into the last km He can’t hold the big names away any more. So close and yet so far away...
Gasparotto takes what the sprinters thought was supposed to be their first day of glory.
