Rider of the month: Alberto Contador, Saxo – Tinkoff. For the second month in a row he showed complete and utter domination. 4 stages, a mountain jersey and the GC in Tour de France is hard to compete with.
Nordic rider of the month: Thor Hushovd, Volvo – STARK. Well two stages and a green jersey in Tour de France should say it all, but it just gets more impressive when it is the second year in a row the big Norwegian fights his way to green after a lot of commentators deemed him out of top racing. He might not be the fastest, but he is still one of the strongest riders in the peloton!
Special Mention: Roger Kluge, Argos – Shimano. The German won 6 out of the 9 stages in Tour of Qinghai Lake with his 3rd place in stage 9 his worst. That not only gave him the GC and the points jersey but also rocketed his team into contention for promotion to the World Tour after an otherwise disappointing season for Argos - Shimano.
Atlantius, Manager of Volvo - STARK
As something else we will this month be talking to the manager of Volvo – STARK instead of the Nordic Rider of the month.
Your team was surprisingly strong in the Tour de France. How did you see the race from the team car?
First of all I’m not surprised. We knew Thor could get the green – after all he won it last year with a much smaller margin than this year and Jesper was just by the by far best young climber here. The competition was week, but I still think he would have been able to fight for white with stronger opposition.
The only thing I regret a little is not telling Thomas to chase the dots earlier in the race, but that is completely on my shoulders.
And then it was just terrifying to watch Contador tear things apart. He never once looked out of control – and that’s after finishing 2nd in the Giro and completely destroying Tour de Suisse. That guy just doesn’t seem human!
You have put together a strong team for next year with especially a lot of new Norwegians, does these strong newcomers mean that the team budget for next year is all used up?
Far from it! Not only have we saved up a little money this year, but STARK will be replaced by a sponsor willing to put quite a bit of money into the project, so we have all the money we could possible dream of next year.
I’m intrigued. You can’t say something like that without giving us a little something…
I still can’t tell you the company name. They have been through a bit of turbulence, but have come out solid on the other side after some rearrangements in the company, but they want to show the public a strong financial result before announcing this venture. We have to respect that!
But what about the riders then?
It should really be kind of obvious when looking at who’s on the market, but OK I’ll give you a name.
I’ll give you the oldest rider we will be signing this year. In fact he’s the second oldest active Swedish cyclist. Kessiakoff has had a couple of mediocre seasons at Astana, but now it is time to let him release hid full potential to the benefit of Swedish cycling as a whole and our team in particular.

ENECO Tour
All in all a fairly uneventful race.
I could tell you in detail about all the stages, but then you would get as bored as I did in the team car.
The race was decided by two thing: The riders ability to not crashing/being caught behind a crash and their TT-skills. Only stage 4 had the slightest drama, but no one won more than a minute here and it didn't really affect the final GC.
Lasse Bøchman was mainly here to get fit for Post Danmark Rundt later this month, but still he did very good finishing 6th on the GC.
We chased every single stage, but no breakaways were allowed to last to the finish line and in the sprints Jebjerg once again showed that he just isn’t fast enough for sprints in world tour races…

Ian: And that combined with a less than optimal fitness (82 on stage 1) as he is mainly preparing for Post Danmark Rundt! He really did a lot better than expected, but considering his 3rd place last year the race does seem to fit him very well...
Jakstar: Very good indeed in a very chaotic race.
sutty: He did indeed. And I don't think it's that bad a move for Wiggins. He has lost his status as a top-climber and haven't performed at all well this year, so a breath of fresh air might do him good. Along with that Liquigas haven't managed to extend with any of their best three GC riders so he will be much more important for Liquigas than he was this last season with Vodafone.
SSJ2Luigi: To be fair Caja Rural does get q good few wild-card for the Spanish races (including Vuelta), so he will still get plenty of chances in the big races. But a surprising move in deed! I can already now say that the next month contains even more surprising transfers...

Something doesn't seem quite right...
Anyone, who thought that Contador’s achievements this season doesn’t seem quite human might turn out to be right.
Rumours has it that Contador has given a blood sample, containing “Adverse Analytical Findings”. The blood sample got mixed up on the lab with a research project looking at erythrocytes of marine mammals capable of maintaining an oxygen reserve for a long time under water.
The project had made several interesting findings on a cellular level when they ran a group of randomly selected human blood samples for reference. One of these samples showed a greatly increased density of haemoglobin in the erythrocytes and as a result a much enlarged oxygen-carrying capacity without an increased haematocrit.
It is suspected to be due to a gene variation not earlier described in humans, but the scientists have been able to splice it in to the genome of other animals earlier.
How this has happened to Alberto Contadors blood is yet to be discovered as is it uncertain whether or not it technically is against the current anti-doping regulations.
Contador has been suspended by his team while the investigations continue.
WADA has promised that the case will be run within the month as they can’t be bothered to run it by the Spanish cycling federation.
Contador’s defence lawyers claim the changes in Alberto’s genome to be caused by a this far unknown virus he must have picked up on a training camp in Basque Country and challenge UCI and Wada to prove that such a virus cannot exist.
