Giro d'Italia
Stage 19: Treviso – Comano Terme
Final “mountain” stage. Hopefully the downhill sections near the finish will help Jakob regain a bit of the lost time, while Christopher will be looking to get the points on the first climb.
A big break gets away early and Juul-Jensen gets in there as planned but it is reeled back in by Euskaltel before the mountain.
Christopher does well to pull away on the incline but is beaten by Chiarini in the sprint after having pull all the way to the top. I have no idea why the Italian did that!
When the peloton crosses the top only 66 riders remain. From my team Christensen has fallen behind but that’s ok.
Once again Fuglsang struggles to keep up on the climb. Good news is that neither Antón nor Contador got any points on the climb, so Christopher has almost secured the jersey now!
Chiarini just manage to hold on to get the biggest triumph in his career, while Jakob puts in another slightly disappointing stage.

Giro d'Italia
I guess we had too high expectations from Jakob only a few months after he joined the team. The many years as super-domestique has obviously impaired his winning instinct quite a bit and we will have to work harder to get him back on track and find that little something that can make him achieve his full potential. Still a 12th place in a Grand Tour is certainly not a bad effort – just that little bit less than what we had hoped for.
On the other hand two brilliant stage wins should be enough to save the race for us – but then there’s the glorious story of how Christopher just kept on fighting for the mountain jersey even though the experts deemed him out of the competition more than once. He rode a clever race winning where he could and sparing himself the battles he would only have a chance to lose. I think the picture of Jussi and Gustav cheering over the last categorized climb says everything about the spirit on this team!

On top of that great form throughout the giro and the stats show clearly why he wasn't anywhere near doing something in the finish of the breaks he was in

Rider of the month: Igor Antón, Euskaltel - Euskadi. Well anyone who followed the Giro will know why…
Nordic rider of the month: Christopher Juul-Jensen. The young Dane surprised everyone by a fighting ferociously for the mountain jersey in the Giro. Most of the competition seemed to underestimate him, but he just kept fighting and took the jersey right under the nose of Antón.
Christopher Juul-Jensen, Volvo - STARK
Would it be fait to say that you taking a Grand Tour mountain jersey is highly surprising?
Indeed it would, but mountain jerseys have kind of turned in to the team speciality so we decided to make it a priority to chase it.
Being the only rider able to cheat Antón for the jersey-treble must also be something very special?
Obviously, but I’m not fooling anyone. Igor was the by far best climber I was just more focused and dedicated to winning this particular jersey with no regard of how painful the last 40 km of the stages might be…
Is this an indication that you will be the first clean Danish GT-winner?
I’m afraid that’s putting the hoped too high. The management here have helped me develop a lot, but I have to admit I’m starting to find it hard to keep developing in the same speed. I’d say that guys like Jesper Hansen or even Willy Ipsen has more potential in that direction than I have.
I’m happy to help the team and get to ride my own chances when there’s room for it, but I will never expect to be captain in the big World Tour races.

AG2R La Mondiale will be replaced by Orange as main sponsor of what looks to be a World Tour Team.
Tissot will be taking over for BMC and Team Europcar will be known as Team Alstom.
Many expected Orica to become sole sponsors of when GreenEdge leave the team next season, but it has now been announced that Commonwealth Bank will join as co-sponsor of the team.
Gazprom will make this their only year as main sponsor. The management were on the lookout for a big Russian sponsor, but failed. Instead the team will be sponsored by Volkswagen next year. It is expected that this change will lead to major changes on the team roster as well.
Following a lot of rumours regarding the future of Belgian Classics star Jelle Vanendert the management at Lotto Belisol have told everyone to stay away from the Belgian as they will do whatever it takes to keep him in the team.
Farnese Vini – Selle Italia is rumoured to be chasing Vincenzo Nibali.

The Mountain Jersey was a very nice thing to bring home. Fuglsang should've raced top 10, but things happen

Skoda-Tour de Luxembourg
Volvo really wanted us to take part in this race sponsored by one of their main competitors. They told us we should chase a stage win and so we did.
On the prologue we only managed a 5th, and with Boasson Hagen to take care of the sprints it was obvious that we would have to chase the breakaways. We got a rider away on every stage, but the stage win continued to elude us. The guys pretty much dominated the mountain classification though.
On stage 4 the break finally managed to last all the way. We had Thomas Riis in there. He tried to attack early since he (like his father) is not a natural born sprinter. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to take the stage, but that was quickly forgotten when the peloton crossed the line more than 8 minutes later. Why? Because Thomas had taken not only the mountain jersey but also the GC lead!
So the last stage was about defending our GC lead. We chose a rather unconventional way to do this: We put a man in the break and made sure he was the best placed rider there so that if the break would last we would still be sure to get the overall win.
On this stage it was Jussi, who got out there. He was feeling good all day and in the end managed to cross the line alone one minute ahead of his former breakaway companions!
This sure turned out better than expected! I wonder how Skoda feels about having "their" race dominated by Volvo...
