I'm hoping for a great Giro for Fuglsang

I won't have time to start racing the Giro until next weekend at the earliest, so this story is gonna take a small break - but it will be back!

Giro d'Italia Preview

The Route

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1e/Giro_d_Italia_2007.png

This years Giro-route is identical to the one won by Di Luca in 2007 and contains
1 TTT (25 km)
1 Flat TT (42 km)
1 Mountain TT (12 km)
8 Flat stages
3 Hilly stages, one of these with an uphill finish
7 Mountain stages, three of these with a summit finish

Favourites

There’s a lot of strong climbers here, but the big favourite for the race has to be Contador, who have shown some good form in the end of Romandie. Apart from him Nibali will be highly motivated in this race being the home favourite and will be the only rider expected to challenge Contador. The Spaniard has the by far strongest support of the two and with a Team Time Trial on stage one that could very well prove decisive.
www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/imageBank/g/giro11st14-NIBALI-BERT.jpg

In the mountains Anton, Quintana, Urán, Van den Broeck and Henao should be able to put in a strong effort. None of them should be able to match Nibali and Contador in the TT though.

The youth jersey looks to be an easy win for Quintana.

The Sprinters

As for the sprints Greipel stands out as the big favourite but Farrar and the two Italian top sprinters Guardini and Napolitano will do their best to challenge him. If Rabobank have a clear division of the roles Renshaw and Matthews could prove a lethal combination as well, but probably only if they agree who is the captain…

Giro d'Italia

Stage 1: Caprera – La Maddalena (TTT)
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-11_zps8921974d.jpg
We have sent a lot of our best TT’ers hoping to put Jakob in a good position from the start by putting in a good performance today.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-12_zps581ac240.jpg
A lot of people reckon that Saxo – Tinkoff might very well take the pink jersey today and keep it throughout the race. Our Danish-based competitors are first to go off in spite of being the big favourite among the bookmakers today.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-13_zps8348df88.jpg
Surprisingly ISD – Ferrari match Saxo – Tinkoff on the second on the first intermediate!
Between the first and the second intermediate Saxo – Tinkoff is starting to loose terrain.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-14_zps25f84535.jpg
The exact opposite happen with my guys, who gets the provisional best time in goal 7 seconds faster than Astana. Still half of the teams still to some but beating than Astana, Saxo, Rabobank and Vodafone is already a good effort by any measure!
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-15_zps930ec86f.jpg
BMC lead by Italian champion Pinotti was hoping to do well but is 5th in goal 43 seconds slower than us!
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-16_zpsa4041d01.jpg
Movistar was looking better than us on both intermediate, but so were a lot of other teams so we hold out breath as they approach the line.
They ride in 38’03’’. Fast but not fast enough!!
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-17_zpsaaa7e616.jpg
Alex Rasmussen is leading Garmin – Sharp into the last km. Probably the last team with a shot at challenging us. I guess we’re just too good for the others today!

Wow! I did not expect the guys to do this well!!

Of course the stage was a big focus point for us as we know that Jakob can't keep up with the likes of Contador and Nibali on the long run so if he is to get that GC top 10 we're aiming for we couldn't afford loosing too much time today.

Even with these guys all in top shape this is more than we could have expected, but it goes to show that each and every one of these riders deserve to ride on this level!

What a Great way to start the Giro Grin

And in a TTT as well Smile

Atlantius
Ian: Thank Smile Micromanagement combined with a bit of luck and a team without a single bad TT'er and no riders with form below 85 I guess, but I was quite surprised they held on to the win. My first TTT-win in PCM ever! (without quick-simming that is)

sutty: In deed. Much better than I had expected Grin

I suck at TTT and I am only good at actual TT when I am using Bradley Wiggins.

But still AMAZING VICTORY Grin

Atlantius
Jakstar: I used to as well, but then when I cracked the ITT's they became kind of a speciality of mine. I was really thrilled though when I for the first time nailed a TTT Grin

Stage 2: Tempio Pausania – Bosa
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-21_zps03647b8f.jpg
The organizers call this a flat stage, but I can think of more than one sprinter, who could get in trouble on that hill…

We didn’t bring a sprinter to this race, so in spite of holding the jerseys we considered it up to the other teams to chase the bunch sprint.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-22_zps09d8118c.jpg
We did bring a Finnish guy though and he found himself a spot in the breakaway along with some guys better at sprinting than climbing. With 87 km to go they have 8 minutes gap on the peloton.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-23_zps85d7a161.jpg
When the climb began with 48 km to go the gap had been brought down to 5’18’’ due to Lotto, Farnese Vini and Garmin.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-24_zpsde22b215.jpg
Jussi knew that he would have to get rid of the fast guys in the group and on the hill he gave it all he had. Pulling hard for a long time and ending it with a powerful attack.
Not quite powerful enough to get away though, but at least he got rid of Chicchi and Kruopis. The Veikkanen-group has 2’40’’ to the peloton with 25 km to go.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-25_zps40e5f101.jpg
The break gets to ride for the stage win and Vermelfoort being the best sprinter gets to lead for the last few km before the sprint begins and gets to be the first to start sprinting. Lucky him…
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-26_zpsf1c50086.jpg
Pavarin was quite a lot stronger than everyone else following his perfect leadout from Vermelfoort. Jussi did his best, but was just too tired after his massive work on the hill to put in a strong sprint. Still a nice effort by a guy claiming all day to have bad legs though, and certainly he will enjoy wearing pink tomorrow.

Looks like the stage Greipel have been waiting for.

i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-32_zpse0a55ed2.jpg
A fairly quiet stage for us. A break got away early and we had a couple of guys helping to keep them within reasonable distance.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-34_zps789992fa.jpg
With 30 km to go the gap was down to just over two minutes. Plenty for us to keep the pink jersey, so now everything is up to the sprinter teams.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-35_zpsa62b1535.jpg
The break is caught with 12 km to go and the last part of the races is too fast for surprise attacks. At this point it looks as Farnese Vini vs. Lotto Belisol, while we just stay near the front to avoid getting intp trouble.
i1353.photobucket.com/albums/q675/AllanHG/Nordic%20Cycling%20Project/2014%20Volvo%20Stark/05-05-Giro-36_zps65ea83f4.jpg
Sieberg opens for Greipel while Guardini has both Cunego and Finotto in front of him.

Greipel is forced to go early as Sieberg haven’t got a lot to give. Way too early that is…
In the end none of the two teams doing the work gets rewarded.
