Tour Down Under - Stage 6
roturn
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_6_PCM0134.jpg

The final criterium in Adelaide finishes as usual the Tour Down Under. 90km of pure flatness today and still the race officials found a tiny hill to be worth a Cat.2 KoM, that has to be ridden twice. Is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Mandri`s jersey in danger now? We will see later. But the more important question is if i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Froome can hold on to his GC lead or is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Van Stayen taking 18 bonus seconds to beat the Brit on the final meters.
20 bonus seconds in the finish for the winner and 2x6s at the intermediates.
Also other top sprinters surely want to take a win before leaving Australia. In especially i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Napolitano and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Cavendish can`t be happy with their results yet, neither can i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Haussler and several other sprinters.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_6_PCM0135.jpg

Some non sprinters that also can`t be happy with their early season performance here, are at least in todays breakaway.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Weening totally disapppeared here just like most of his team. At least they grabbed a stage win to save the race.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Mehr-Wenige is a similar case. Awful performances here and now on his way to come back?
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Frohlinger
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Tanovitchii, a well known attacker here going for the KoM?
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rse.png Watson
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Mat Senan and
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Anza going for a last chance for Kappa to get something out of this race.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_6_PCM0144.jpg

Mehr-Wenige takes the intermediate sprint earlier on and more important for Froome. With such a huge group, there won`t be anything for Van Stayen.

On the KoM here Mat Senan takes the full points and as surprisingly all riders go for it, Tanovitchii can`t take any points here and he just needs 10 to equalize Mandri. So 10 more to come on the next.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_6_PCM0146.jpg

The sprinter teams line up to guarantee a sprint finish. Meiji, Venchi, RBC, Oz and BelarusBank. All of the top teams are here. Surprisingly less riders by Venchi, who would need a sprint the most. But with 40km and the gap down to 2min, it`s looking well for another sprint finish.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_6_PCM0149.jpg

2nd KoM and despite Tanovitchii being able to get a few more points, it`s not enough to beat Mandri as Wenning and Frohlinger are stronger. So we already have the winner of the KoM jersey. But who takes the other jerseys?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_6_PCM0151.jpg

Bringing together wind and fast pace rarely is good when being at the end of the peloton. Just ask the classic specialists.
Today it`s pretty windy here in Down Under and lots of riders find themselves behind a big gap. Race radio even speaks of more than 70 riders!!!
And now the obvious question many team mates and managers are asking: Where is my leader?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_6_PCM0156.jpg

We still have no answer yet as officials are still trying to get all info together. What we see in live pictures is that the wind also did hurt the chasing as many riders did not want to go a too high pace until everyone is informed.
That said, it`s a good chance for teams without a real GC rider and a sprinter definitely ahead.

So we see Sulzberger bringing the stage winner of the fourth, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ozc.png Matthew Goss to the front. Obviously not ideal that early but otherwise the breakaway would have taken this for sure. Just behind him i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Ventoso and also other riders in the first rows:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Napolitano/Modolo/Arashiro
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Vanderbiest/Docker
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Cavendish/Hutarovich
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Van Stayen
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Kump/Grillo

And we also see lots of GC riders in the first positions such as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Froome, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Gautier or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Ulissi. Three easy to spot jerseys of course.

And now we also get the info that Dowsett, Ben Nasser and the rest of the top10 is inside the peloton. But some of those pretty far in the end still being in the danger to have a 2nd split.

Most known riders behind an important rider for Van Stayen as his leadout Dockx is dropped. Also behind Wegmann and some minor sprinters.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_6_PCM0166.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Meiji really with a strong race so far. That said, only the sprints as Efimkin should have done better imo. Arashiro and a very strong Modolo are a huge leadout for Napolitano, who couldn`t really pay back their work so far. Eventually today?

Behind them Vanderbiest and Goss fight for his wheel, while Van Stayen is right behind the duo as also Kump. More sprinters at the moment don`t look to fresh and unfortunately for CSC that Ventoso lost Goss wheel.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_6_PCM0171.jpg

Once more a great leadout by Arashiro and now with 1km to go Modolo on his way to higher the pace again. Napolitano not looking as strong as usual keeping a small gap to his teammate.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_6_PCM0173.jpg

Vanderbiest and Kump had no chance in the end. Too fast for them.
Meiji in front with two riders and the line is close. Goss through the middle and Van Stayen on the left! Is he really going to win the GC with this last stage or are the other three taking the win also for Froome?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_6_PCM0174.jpg

It is Van Stayen! What a great final and in the end the strongest rider this Tour Down Under wins the GC and 3 stages totally deserved! The only rider to be in the top10 on every single day.

2s make him win the GC ahead of Froome this season. That`s actually less close than last year.

Froome still on a good 2nd with Ulissi following them on the podium. Ben Nasser and Gautier as next can surely be happy with the result. And obviously Simon and Rabon will as well as both couldn`t have been expected that high with that startlist.

Ventoso, Betancourt and the first helper in Bilbao to complete the top 10. So biggest disappointments are Dowsett (13.), Efimkin (16.), Roy (22.) and definitely Mehr-Wenige (48.), Barrio (69.), Weening (78.) or Lejman (88.).

Points obviously go to Van Stayen easily while Betancourt takes the Youth jersey. Team ranking for La Vie Claire a bit surprising.

And as said in the preview. Some teams might regret to send so strong squads here. In especially Allianz, Jaguar, Meiji (despite their decent results), BelarusBank or Amex can`t be happy with the rider - point comparison.

Special note for Bintunimana. After his crash on stage 1 and the following fight he got the rider of the crowd award as known from the Tour Down Under in recent years. And day for day the spectators were pushing him forward to finish the race. And in the end he did. By far in last position but a huge finish for him after he surely was injured.
