Tour Down Under - Stage 4
roturn
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0001.jpg

After two hillier stages, it`s time again for the sprinters to perform. Two stage wins already for i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Van Stayen, what makes him to the clear stage favourite today.
Then again the sprinter field is strong here and on the first really flat sprint other sprinters might have more energy in the end.
So we have a longer list of favourites such as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mei.png Napolitano, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Cavendish, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ozc.png Goss, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Vanderbiest, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Richeze, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Haussler and many more.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0002.jpg

5 riders form todays breakaway.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Kastrantas
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kar.png Azanza
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Hudecek
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Abreu
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bac.png Kruopis

3 of those with only 1'32 behind race leader Van Stayen. But expert expect nothing but a sprint finish today with too many teams interested to take a stage win.
Kastrantas though also should have interest in the KoM as he already has 10 points on his account.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0009.jpg

But all 5 riders were interested to get those as the categories usually give quite a lot of points here in Down Under. So it`s Azanza crossing the line first ahead of Abreu and Hudecek. Kastrantas only comes over as 4th taking 4 points only ahead of Kruopis getting the last few points.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0012.jpg

It`s mainly CSC behind now. Venchi also in the front rows but they are not working any longer. Ventoso is a good bet for a high GC and a good sprint even though the hillier sprints suit him much more as he might miss the top speed of the pure sprinters.
Then again his 2nd on day 1 proved his early form.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0014.jpg
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0016.jpg

Both sprints were contested by the breakaway with Hudecek and Azanza taking one of them each. Both also took points on the other one with Kruopis being the only other rider taking some points in both.
Nothing for Kastrantas and Abreu.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0019.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Abreu is the last man standing. 14km to the finish and all others are caught. The Venezuelan with a huge fight here in the end. With 24 years of age he still has a lot to learn but today he already proves to have nice talent.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0021.jpg

But a mix of BelarusBank and RBC Pro Cycling riders made it impossible for him to stay in front.
Almost all riders for those two teams are at the front now going for their main sprinters Cavendish and Vanderbiest. Can they break Venchi`s dominance today?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0023.jpg

No surprise that those two also form sprint trains today. Vanderbiest with last year`s double stage winner Docker and Cavendish with Hutarovych as final leadout. Can`t be much better actually.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Houlei439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Hutarovich

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Richeze

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cpl.png Manan
Missing today some notable names such as leadouts Van Avermaet and Modolo, who already performed well here. Also Gavazzi and the Swedbank duo Ahlstrand/Kreder without interest/form today. Aussie Sutton also not in last years Crit form it seems even though the competition is much stronger here.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0044.jpg

Hutarovich with a very strong leadout for Cavendish. That said, Hugo Houle just left the RBC train and a fresh Docker takes over now. So Vanderbiest should have a teammate ahead of him much longer than Cavendish as it`s still 1,8km to go.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0046.jpg

Cavendish starts the sprint with 1,1km to go with Goss and Haussler just behind him.
Vanderbiest is slowly moving forwards behind Docker, while there is already a small gap to Napolitano, Van Stayen, Grillo...

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0049.jpg

Haussler in front. Can he take the win here? Cavendish just not in form it seems. This might be a huge bummer for the team, that is so reliable on their top sprinters.
Goss in 2nd while Grillo comes on the far right together with Napolitano.
On the other side Vanderbiest, Hoffman and Drujon come fast while Van Stayen seems to be beaten today without his leadout train.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0053.jpg

What a close sprint here with still many sprinters able to take this one.
Haussler starts to slow down a bit and Goss, Hoffman and Vanderbiest look the strongest right now. But also Napolitano, Drujon and Ventoso are not out of the race yet.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0056.jpg

Close until the end. But no photo finish needed as Goss takes the first Aussie win 2014 with ~1/2 wheel length. Big win for Oz Cycling.
Haussler with a strong sprint comes over as 2nd ahead of a surprising strong Nolan Hoffman today. Can the South African have a similar strong season as in 2013?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_4_PCM0057.jpg

Goss celebrating his win after he was riding a very smart sprint.

Behind the top3 today Napolitano as best of the rest ahead of Vanderbiest and Drujon, who seems to be a very consistent sprinter just like last season.
Ventoso as 7th ahead of Richeze and a slightly disappointed Van Stayen as 9th only ahead of Grillo.
GC riders surely are happy to see Van Stayen not taking any more bonus seconds.

Cavendish as 14th with another very unlucky result. Surely the team needs a better finish in the next races.

Tomorrow waits the queen stage on Willunga Hill. Can Van Stayen defend his lead there? Or will he lose it to the top puncheurs or even a complete surprise rider like Simon for example, who performed very well so far?
