Tour Down Under - Stage 2
roturn
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0046.jpg

Next stage in Down Under and it`s the first hilly rated. Except for that one late hill, the stage does actually not look too hard. But there we should expect something as the climb is not just looking hard. The slopes are pretty high and can cause some damage.

But the question is: Can the best puncheurs like Froome, Ulissi, Dowsett etc. get rid of yesterdays first two Van Stayen and Ventoso?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0047.jpg

4 riders in the early break. But the pace behind is still really high, so the gap is not yet getting too big.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Slagter
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Ludvigsson
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Tanovitchii
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Kochetkov

In especially Tanovitchii is interesting as he was one of yesterdays attacker but being 2nd only in KoM and U25 rankings he might be interested to get more points today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0053.jpg

Kochetkov, Slagter and Tanovitchii is the order at the first sprint. Different to last stage there won`t be points for the peloton left.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0055.jpg

Teams like Oz, BelarusBank etc. obviously wanted to take the first sprint. But as the group gave them a great fight, Team Venchi probably is quite happy to calm down the peloton a bit. The gap is going up and the 4 riders in front indeed form the breakaway.
Interesting to see Van Avermaet doing some work already. So the team does not seem to expect a normal sprint finish today, where he would need to be the last leadout.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0059.jpg

Slagter takes the 2nd and last sprint for today. Ludvigsson and Kochetkov behind him.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0062.jpg

The GC teams Bacardi, Jaguar and Quickstep take over and higher the pace. Apparently they really want to make the race as hard as possible from now on.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0064.jpg

The short hills before a longer descent already causes a lot of damage. Many sprinters like Cavendish, Haussler, Docker, Hoffman etc. have lost contact and also others like Goss are at the very end of the long peloton already.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0070.jpg

16,2km and still half of the "descent" left before the climb. The breakaway though is a victim of the high pace and is caught already.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0072.jpg

There we go. Still not having reached the climb, some smaller GC riders attack.
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Trentin
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Kump
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Simon
make a very interesting trio as all of those are a great mix of puncheur and sprinter.
A bit behind also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ozc.png Jiao follows with good support by the crowd. He is no Aussie, but riding for the top Aussie team here, makes it somewhat the same.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0077.jpg

Another Aussie and probably one of the future best in Lachlan Morton though is sent to the front by Jaguar to pull them back. Preseason winner Dowsett seems to have huge ambitions here to be one of the best again.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0079.jpg

The four though still fight and in especially Julien Simon with a strong performance creating a small gap.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0081.jpg

Marko Kump though is the last attacker, who stays in front and taking the KoM here, which also means that he will wear the KoM jersey tomorrow. Bacardi, Quickstep and Jaguar helpers though come over the line just behind and so all are back together.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0083.jpg

That said, only 67 riders made it over the top within the first group. So quite a lot of riders lost contact and race radio names some better puncheurs missing the split:
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Mehr-Wenige might be the biggest name and in especially after Kupfernagel`s win in the Down Under Classic, the rider swap looks quite bad so far for Amex.
Also a lot of Kappa and Gazelle riders seem to be behind such as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Weening/Oss or i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Failli/Anza/Scarponi. Also i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Durasek and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/fcb.png Leijman probably expected to stay in front.
Also one of last years top riders here in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Gavazzi is a surprise to be behind.
Obviously many teams did underestimate that climb here and were surprised by the toughness.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0099.jpg

Venchi is not really doing a train, but with Dockx and Aregger, Van Stayen has still huge support here.
Other than that a lot of puncheurs behind like Gautier, Efimkin, Wegmann, Ben Nasser, Froome, De Maar, Dowsett.
But also Kreder as decent sprinter, Ulissi, Grosu and Betancourt are still in a decent position.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0109.jpg

Venchi doing the triple? Dockx in the middle, Van Stayen on the right and Aregger left with a good gap already.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0111.jpg

Van Stayen goes into the lead but still 3 Venchi riders in the first positions.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_2_PCM0112.jpg

With a huge gap he also takes stage number 2. What a start into the season for the Belgium sprinter. You can already expect big things from him this season.
Dockx keeps on to finish 2nd to make it a real Venchi domination here so far. De Maar as surprising 3rd delivers nicely for Quickstep. Gautier as best puncheur as 4th already doing better than last season with Aregger completing the Venchi domination as 5th and getting the U25 jersey now.

But more important now the time gaps to the dropped riders. A first group with +1'19 contains riders like Gasparotto, Failli, Dyachenko or Kiryenka.

The next with +2'04 around Anza while Weening, Mehr-Wenige, Devolder, Chaoufi, Oss, Durasek, Leijman, Gavazzi and lots of sprinters lose 2'34 already and so most chances for a good GC.

GC wise we see a 1-2 now for Venchi but with Ventoso, Napolitano, Goss, Van Avermaet, Davis or Kreder still quite a few sprinters in decent positions. But also the puncheurs start to get the top10 positions slowly.
