Tour Down Under - Stage 1
roturn
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0001.jpg

Interesting first stage already. Quite a few hills on the way to the finish. Still experts expect a peloton sprint in the end but with the last hill is not far from the line an ambitious attack there could actually create a gap.

Also it will be interesting to see if the pure sprinters can come over the hills relaxed enough to challenge the better puncheurs.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0002.jpg

The peloton is waiting for the official start. A colorful peloton this year. Who will attack first? Some of the well known attackers are already in the front rows probably trying to attack with km0.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0003.jpg

Only two riders in todays breakaway even though more tried to jump into the group. In teh end too many teams behind kept the pace high.
The only two successful are
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Kastrantas and
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Tanovitchii.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0006.jpg

Both riders are decent puncheurs, so a close fight for the KoM was expected. In the end the Gazelle rider was stronger and takes it with quite a gap.
As the top5 are rewarded with points here but nobody was interested behind, Blazquez, Kocjan and Waeytens take the small points.
So obviously we have Quickstep (Froome) and Bacardi (Ulissi) doing the pace to avoid a time loss for their GC top favourites.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0010.jpg

First crash and it`s one of Cavendish`s helper in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/bbk.png Kunitski.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0012.jpg

Kastrantas also takes the first sprint ahead of Tanovitchii. No sharing between those two.
But now it`s getting more interesting. Different to the KoM, we see some sprinters on their way forward for the last points.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0013.jpg

3 sprinters to be more accurate. Plus a Mavic car and a motobike trying to take influence here.
In the end Cavendish in a close fight wins this mini sprint ahead of Napolitano and Goss. So quite a few big names, while all others weren`t interested.

The pace behind now got faster with mainly Quickstep and Bacardi still doing the work. 3min gap with ~60km to go and so far a nice ride for the sprinter teams.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0018.jpg

While the order at the sprint was the same in the front group, we saw the same fight again for the 3rd.
This time Napolitano was a tiny bit faster than Cavendish. A great fight between those two, while Goss again comes over the line behind them. So a first sign of what to expect at the finish? Eventually though their effort here makes them more exhausted in the finish to give other sprinters a better chance.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0021.jpg

With 30km to go Venchi comes to the front highering the pace another time. 20km left now and they still keep the pace high and the gap down to 1'20.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0023.jpg

Last sprint is 18km ahead of the finish. This time Tanovitchii was stronger as the gap is still at 1'20 and they might hope for a surprise here.
Behind only Napolitano this time going for the points as the pace obviously was too fast for the other two. And just by a little bit he is able to take the points ahead of the Venchi pace machine, that leads a very long peloton now.
Not to think about what might happen if the pace stays the same on that last ascent soon.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0026.jpg

7.8km and on the middle of the climb the duo is finally caught by Venchi. The peloton is still together but we see some sprinters in the 2nd half not having the energy to fight for the stage win today. But still it`s a bit until the line and they might come back on the descent.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0028.jpg

The hill only allowed two sprint trains today as the other teams did not have strong enough helpers or eventually also sprinter to organize a sprint train.
So Venchi against Meiji it is with other sprinters hanging behind those.

Goss found the perfect wheel behind that incredibly strong Venchi train, while most others decided to follow the Meiji sprinters.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0039.jpg

Did I say incredible strong Venchi train?
Actually Modolo did beat Van Avermaet by quite a lot in the perfect leadout.
So it`s Napolitano having a nice gap now with Vanderbiest behind.

Van Stayen, Grillo, Goss and the rest of the top sprinters a bit behind as Modolo really destroyed the train behind Meiji.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0041.jpg

But this is not looking good for Meiji now. Modolo seems too strong for Napolitano, who obviously lacks the freshness after going for all three intermediate sprints. Venchi on the right with Van Stayen being on the far right is coming strong now.
Also Vanderbiest and Grillo are fast from behind.
A bit further back the hillier sprinters look better than the rest actually as Ventoso and Kump go past Haussler, Goss, Cavendish, Richeze etc.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0044.jpg

Van Stayen takes the lead but Modolo is still in 2nd. What a sprint by the Italian, who unfortunately had to be in the wind too early as Napolitano was the leader to go for.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game%202014/Tour%20Down%20Under/mg2014_tdu_1_PCM0045.jpg

Stage win for Van Stayen. One of the top favourites takes it with 1-2 bike lengths ahead of the fast Ventoso, who used his slipstream perfectly.
Both can use those bonus seconds a lot as they are good bets for a high GC.

Vanderbiest as 3rd proves his form after being well placed before the sprint. Modolo as 4th a surprise today and it`s actually a big surprise that he kept such a high pace until the end. Also Grillo as 5th and Drujon as 6th with strong performances.

Kump as 7th also shows the difficulty of todays stage with Van Avermaet still coming in 8th ahead of first Aussie Goss and Haussler to round up the top10.

Napolitano (13.) and Cavendish (15.) obviously had to pay tribute after their earlier effort as also the hilly final.
