Tour Down Under - Stage 5
roturn
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_266.jpg

Willunga Hill is THE climb in the Tour Down Under. Often the GC was decided on this stage. But different to recent years we won`t pass it 2 times for a flat finish afterwards but instead will finish on top of it after the 2nd ascent. So it looks at least more difficult than before and it favours the puncheurs far more than the sprinters.
Aleksandr Efimkin won the first puncheur stage ahead of Dowsett and Costa. Who of them will win today or will we see somebody completely different?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_267.jpg

We are already 25km into todays stage and we see a big breakaway of 10 riders.
Hansen (Pivovarno)
Scheirlinckx (Hollister)
Eichler (Sram)
Van der Schueren (HTC)
Kadri (Vueling)
Soto Pereira (Adira)
Kurth (Amex)
Ford (Oz)
Teruel (CSC)
Ortega (Jap-Kor)
Scheirlinckx (23.) and Eichler (6.) are very dangerous, in especially in such a big group.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_271.jpg

Swedbank, Cisco, Jaguar, UPC and also Meiji immediately increase the pace behind as it would be too difficult to bring them back later.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_277.jpg

Eichler and Scheirlinckx use this moment and take more bonus seconds. In especially Eichler is just 8s down now but the peloton is still close.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_279.jpg

But after the sprint the peloton calmed down a bit. It`s still very dangerous but they probably don`t want to go high speed for the whole stage. The gap is at 1'48 now.
Other riders, who were partly involved in yesterdays crashes are already behind the peloton such as Boswell, Haidar Anuawar, Itami, Rasmussen and Ziesler.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_281-1.jpg

Scheirlinckx takes the 2nd sprint ahead of Eichler, who is only 4s behind now.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_283.jpg

Who else should attack first? Of course it`s Evian`s Rocchetti again, who attacks short before the first Willunga Hill climb. 29km left and 1'30 for the group around Eichler.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_285.jpg

The climb starts and Van der Schueren was able to create a small gap. Scheirlinckx and Teruel follow while the rest of the breakaway is a bit behind and already less than 30s in front of the peloton.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_287.jpg

But it is Hansen, who is reaching the top first after Van der Schueren and the other duo lost their speed completely. Rocchetti reaches the top as 2nd just ahead of the peloton already.
The Australian will also take the KoM lead after this KoM sprint as the other riders coming over the line had no or just a few points so far.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_290.jpg

Only 30 riders in the first group now after this climb. Also Eichler and Scheirlinckx are behind and so the bonus seconds won`t help then any longer.
Also behind and a bit more surprising:
Zingle (Bpost)
Proni, Betancourt (Hollister)
Hudecek (Sram)
Barrio (CSC)
Gerrans, Visconti, Jiao (Oz)
Vichot (Vueling)
Dyrnes (Risa)
Horrible news for Hollister and home team Oz. Both can`t be happy with their race performance in this Tour Down Under.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_304.jpg

Attacks in the favourite group with 18km to go. Richardson (airBaltic) the initiator. He is followed by Hermans (Swedbank), Chavanel (Amex), Kump (Pivovarna), Puusepp and Rocchetti (Evian).

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_310.jpg

55s behind Betancourt and Vichot do the pace trying to come back while the attackers are caught again.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_312.jpg

The pace in the first group wasn`t very high after that and no more attackers led to the fusion of both groups. But how much energy did Betancourt spend? Also Eichler is back in this group but just hanging at the very end fighting to keep contact.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_315.jpg

Salerno is preparing the final for Efimkin and also UPC is seen in the first rows to work for Gavazzi, who leads the race since the first day.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_329.jpg

3km left and we start the climb for the 2nd time. And immediately an attack by Barredo and Proni as also by the always attacking Evian duo Puusepp and Rocchetti. Maybe they should save their energy a bit better sometimes.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_332.jpg

But they are caught again and we have the next attacks. Duggan accelerates and Costa follows. This looks far stronger.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_334.jpg

Final kilometer and Costa again doing the long sprint with Duggan behind him. They still have 12s on the next: Efimkin, Dowsett, Gavazzi and most surprising his team mate Oelerich.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_336.jpg

Dowsett seems to be the strongest and is already with Duggan. Efimkin is not far behind next to Oelerich, who tries to "pull" Gavazzi with him.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_338.jpg

But Gavazzi struggles and can`t follow the best. Still the gaps are not really given, so it`s still possible for him. Mehr-Wenige obviously picked the wrong wheel as he is now blocked behind him.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_340.jpg

Costa again went too early. Dowsett is leading now but Efimkin is coming closer again. Will we see a repeat of the 2nd stage?

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/Man%20Game/TdU2013/mg_TdU_2013_5_342.jpg

No. This time Dowsett is stronger and wins the queen stage. Efimkin in 2nd is within the same time now and one of them will lead the overall now.
Costa again in 3rd proves to be the strongest next to the top duo. And finally Oz with a good result. Matthew Lloyd comes in 4th ahead of Cisco`s positive surprise Taborre, who once again is performing well.
Hatanaka and Mehr-Wenige, who had an awesome final 300m finish next with Duggan, Betancourt and Cisco`s 3rd Salerno completing the top10.

But there were no gaps and so even Gavazzi is within the first group and stays in 3rd in the overall, which is still a very nice result for him and UPC.
Dowsett who can present the better stage results will be the new leader with Efimkin just behind.
Also the KoM has a new leader and actually already a winner. Adam Hansen just has to finish tomorrows stage and nobody will be able to overtake him.
