Race Day #3 at Strade Bianche
March 3, 2025
My first time racing the historic white gravel roads in the Crete Senesi.

Summary: Past the 20kms to go banner and the four breakaway riders (Garner, Watanabe, Rahbek and Bobic) maintain a 45-second gap on the chasing peloton of 63 favourites who avoided all the crashes today.

Through the gate, banner in sight, Dunbar leads out the sprint on the final incline. The chasers are marked 28 seconds back.

Under the banner! It's still Dunbar but he can't like the look of seeing Diamond and Verona sharing his wheel or the peloton creeping closer in the distance.

Everyone probably would have guessed Diamond to win the sprint, but no. It's Verona who saved enough energy to pass Dunbar on the line.

Result: 3rd - I keep telling people I'm nowhere near my top form yet, but then I go out and get results like this. It's going to be a good season. Also, nice breakaway ride by Grace. Stayed away for over 140kms.

Race Day #4 at Ronde van Drenthe

Summary: SEG has controlled this race from the start to, now, the finish. Alex Vogel leading out Tebiro Pienaar. They also have Diamond further back in the line, while Team Saeco is making the other two-rider train with Simion and Enger. Heavy favourite Degenkolb is about 16 riders back.

The chaotic sprint is won by Matteo Pelucchi. Knapen and Pienaar finish closely behind for the podium placings.

Result: 9th - Tried to stay on Pienaar's wheel but got shuffled off SEG's sprint train with 4kms to go. Free wheeled my way to a Top 10. SEG got three riders in the Top 12: Pienaar (3rd), me (9th) and Vogel (12th).

Race Day #5 at Milano - Sanremo

Summary: Miles and miles of racing and here we are with 15kms to go. Vliegen attacks the remaining 51-cyclist peloton before the final incline.

The gap is erased as the riders go under 10kms to go and start the famous last climb up the Poggio di Sanremo.

Vliegen goes again on the climb. Moscon is quick to react. Then Team CSC plays its cards as former World Champion Matthews goes up the road and leaves sprinter Groenewegen behind.

Matthews is pulled back. Vliegan and Moscon still with a little gap, being chased by the McLaren duo of Vos and Looij. SEG with four cyclists trying to pull the chasers back with Diamond, Van Der Poel, Pienaar and Vogel.

Loic Vliegen makes good of his second attack with an iconic monument victory! Moscon second ahead of the McLaren pair of Looij and Vos. Demare wins the bunch sprint for 5th ahead of Zabel and Wiebes.

Result: 23rd - Team was really strong today. Still not on top form, I sacrificed myself for the team and chased hard on the last climb. The outcome: Pienaar (9th), Vogel (11th), Van Der Poel (12th), myself (23rd) and Schelling (26th). Was praised after the race for being a team player.

Summary: We pick up the action a little earlier than usual with 90kms to go because we have a very unusual breakaway 2'40" up the road. Small attacks starting from around 120kms out has formed the strong 15-cyclist group.

Notables include Diamond with teammate Vollering, Sagan, Van Lerberghe, Colbrelli, Stuyven, Sarreau and Cort Nielsen.

This elite group swells to 29 riders when the rest of the favourites power back to make the catch, leaving the weak cyclists behind. 56kms to go.

Over the last cobble sector with 33kms to go, this front group has been reduced to eight: Van Aert, Stuyven, Ludvik, Diamond, Wiebes, Allegaert, Sarreau and World Champion Benoot.

They all know they can't take Wiebes to the line because she will win that sprint. Although Sarreau and Diamond might pose a decent challenge.

Slow tempo and everybody looking at each other allows Cort Nielsen, Moscon, Van Lerberghe, Rizal and Colbrelli to rejoin with 27kms to go.

Diamond is going to put the pressure on. This likely the last place you can attack with 25kms to go. It's a 1.5km climb at 6.5%.

It's a powerful move! Rizal tried to follow but Diamond reaches the summit solo with a 55-second gap to the chasers. But, still 24kms left.

After talking with his team on the radio. Diamond decides to slow down and allow Rizal to join. It's too long to go solo but perhaps together they could make it to the finish. The chasers behind have started to attack each other.

Summary: Everyone thought this was going to a reduced bunch sprint, but here we have Diamond attacking across to the morning breakaway on the last cobbled climb.

I can't imagine Diamond dragging this group the remaining 34kms to the finish line, but we have to mention this attack regardless.

Pienaar with a huge burst of speed! Just like he did a month ago to win his first stage ever at the Tour of Omen. But did he go too soon?

No. Demare reacts but its too late. Pienaar wins his first major Pro Tour classic. Got to give credit to his teammate Diamond for making this race very difficult and allowing Pienaar to save energy throughout the day.

Result: 26th - For a while there I looked like an idiot for attacking so far out. But little did they know SEG had a secret weapon. Never been so happy to finish 26th. Fantastic win for buddy Pienaar. Well deserved!

Summary: Heavy favourite Andreas Kron blows this race up into many pieces on the cobbles and it's every rider for themselves as Kron powers away for a solo victory. Don't see strength like that very often.

Result: 8th (+49") - Finished in the chase group behind Kron. Pienaar took 5th and Vollering 14th in the next group. So, a good day for SEG.

Monthly Review

The press has dubbed it the worst collapse in professional football in over a decade. You can't argue with them. Title hopes gone and now on the outside looking in on the promotion playoffs. Six points in 12 games. Sickening.

But, we still have six league games left to save our season. Rise from the ashes. We need a hero to emerge and guide Fulham back into the light. Why not me?

Match Day #41 at Brentford (14-13-13, 55 Points, 11th)
April 5, 2025
Kamara and Abraham are tied in the Golden Boot race with 27 goals.

Summary: It's not a loss. Fulham picks up a late point after Brentford scored off a corner in the 52nd minute. Timmy Abraham was taken down in the box in the 81st minute and, somewhat surprisingly, Morgan Gibbs-White stepped to the spot in powered in his first goal for the club in 13 appearances. Losing streak stopped at five games.

Rating: 6.8 - To be honest, lucky we saved a point in this one. And luckily, the three teams directly in front of us in the standings (Ipswich, Blackburn and Burnley) all drew this weekend as well. No ground lost, but no ground gained.

Derby desperate to avoid relegation, we're desperate for promotion.

Summary: Fulham doesn't make look easy, but it's three points. First win since March 1st. The two goals came two minutes apart in the first half by Ryan Woods and Aboubakar Kamara. Marcus Diamond played an important role in both goals. He crossed in a dangerous free kick that created Woods opportunity and then went for this long run to setup Kamara's 28th league goal. Diamond's 12th assist.

Rating: 7.6 - Big win! Now tied with Blackburn for the last playoff spot on 67 points with 5th Burnley (70), 4th Ipswich (71), 3rd Crystal Palace (71) and 2nd Brighton and Hove Albion not too far ahead. Meanwhile, 1st West Bromwich Albion has already secured at least a playoff spot with 80 points. Four games left.

Summary: Just when everybody thought Fulham was getting back on track they drop points against the worst team in the league. Dreadful. Swindon deserved to win and got the game-winning goal with a minute left in second-half stoppage time.

Rating: 7.4 - Not sure we deserve to make the playoffs after this result. But, Blackburn only drew this weekend and we get to play them in two days. One of the reasons why coach didn't play our 'A' squad today.

Match Day #44 vs. Blackburn Rovers (17-9-17, 68 Points, 6th)

The biggest game of the season thus far.

Summary: After all the ups and downs Craven Cottage has seen this season, the home supporters deserve this result. Fulham gets two first-half goals from two unlikely sources who hadn't scored for the club: 20-year-old winger (not singer) Michael Jackson and 22-year-old defensive back Logan Lenehan.

Blackburn put the pressure on with a goal by Jordan Brown in the 23rd minute to make it 2-1, but clutch midfielder Marcus Diamond came through again with a perfect assist to Abraham for his 75th career goal for the club and 28th this season to tie Kamara in the Golden Boot race.

Rating: 7.9 - Tired legs but we got the job done. Still not over as Blackburn only drops two points behind us with two games to go. Barnsley has also won five straight to move a point behind Blackburn. Regardless, this result means we will at least have something to fight for on the last Match Day of the season, if it comes to that.

Summary: For everyone who said Fulham was finished. This instant classic is for you. Ipswich takes control early with a pair of first-half goals by Jason Cummings and Taylor Richards. Marcus Diamond bring Fulham to life in the 51st minute on this goal.

Diamond then finds Logan Lenehan on a perfect corner kick to even the game at 2-2 in the 79th minute. Aboubakar Kamara stunned the Ipswich supporters into silence with what looked to be the clincher in the 90th minute. Not quite, this epic had a couple more twists. Cumming found the equalizer in the 92nd minute.

Two minutes later, often-forgotten about Jonathan Leko scored the biggest goal of his career to lift Fulham to a excited 4-3 victory.

Rating: 9.0 - Count us out, I dare you. Backs against the wall and we survived. Let's GOOOOO! But, we aren't finished yet. Blackburn won 3-0 to stay within two points and they have a better goal difference so a draw next week won't be enough if Blackburn wins. Blackburn will play 11th Swansea City in its final game.

Yet, it's not those two men reaching the finish line together. The pack brings them back and it's crash victims Mike Teunissen and Wout Van Aert who get away late for the top two placings.

Result: 20th (+4'49") - Was struggling before I ended up in the crash. Salvaged a 20th place, same as last year. Hard race for me with my big frame. I get boxed in a lot and have to push my way out of trouble. Pienaar 13th and Vollering 30th, so an OK effort from the team.

Summary: Cobbles and crashes go hand-and-hand, but here we have a crash on an asphalt turn with 140kms to go at the front of the peloton. David Per, Juraj Sagan and Leo Danes abandon the race.

While it would be the first, it wouldn't be the last crash of the day.

The reduced peloton is down to 17 riders with 29kms to go. The morning breakaway of three riders can be seen in the distance. Wiebes is the first favourite to attack in attempt to get across the gap.

The first attack didn't work. But did bring the breakaway back. So Wiebes goes again with 22.8kms left. Favourite and Ronde Van Vlaanderen winner Mike Teunissen goes after her. However, still too many teammates left in the peloton to let this duo slip away. Everyone brought back together for a bunch sprint on the velodrome.

Pedersen wins the Hell of the North, outsprinting Wiebes and Pienaar.

Result: 14th (+2'42") - Helped chase back Wiebes and Teunissen because I knew Pienaar was feeling strong and I didn't have much left. So, yeah, took one for the team. Pienaar quickly gaining recognition.

Result: 1st - Had to overtake Grace on the final climb but she gave me a nod of approval as I flew by and a kiss after crossing the finish line. She even finished 12th for her efforts. Great form, great tactics, great win!

Summary: The fourth monument of the season and last of the spring season is upon us. No duplicate monument winners yet this season with Loic Vliegen winning the Milano - Sanremo, Mike Teunissen in the Ronde van Vlaanderen and Mads Pedersen claiming Paris - Roubaix.

Only Vliegen is racing here today.

CRASH! Some big names go down with 124kms to go: Power, Matthews, Gall, Gaudu, Diamond, Schachmann, Van Der Poel, Pinot, Hartley, Kacian, Wood, Roglic and Izagirre.

We now get word that La Fleche Wallonne and former World Champion Matthews has abandoned the race. Hopefully he recovers well. Everybody else makes it back to the peloton.

Another crash! This one collects Gaudu, Diamond, Pogacar, Felline, Izagirre and Kacian as the most notably names. This with 113kms to go.

Felline eventually withdraws from the race. The rest rejoin.

A third crash reduces the peloton down to 35 riders. The abandon list grows to include Dunbar and Wellens. Lots of favourites struggling behind. Although, there enough in this front group now that the other might struggle to make it back with 76kms left.

Acceleration from Kwiatkowski with 29kms to go. Gall, Power, Foss and Diamond realize this is a move they can't ignore. Breakaway is being led once again by Diamond's girlfriend, Grace Garner, a minute up the road.

Marcus was gradually building form throughout the month (still not top shape yet), just got very lucky with daily form at AGR (+3). Garner really lucky out with +5 daily form at LFW as well. Shame she couldn't capitalize with a win.

Also, wanted to note that Diamond's big frame makes narrow roads a challenge to maneuver. Getting better at it but he occasionally loses energy just battling to stay at the front of the peloton.

Monthly Review

Last game of the league season ahead, here is the current situation.

Win: Secures a playoff spot.

Draw: Secures a playoff spot if Ipswich Town loses at 17th Preston North End. Or Blackburn Rovers draws or loses at 11th Swansea City.

Loss: Secures a playoff spot if Blackburn Rovers doesn't win at Swansea City, plus Barnsley doesn't beat us by more than seven goals.

Speaking of which, our opponent Barnsley is the hottest team in the league right now having won six games in a row — gaining 37 points in its last 15 games.

We have already faced them twice this season: 5-2 defeat in the Third Round of the Carabao Cup and a revenge 6-3 win on the road right before Christmas.

One last note on the thrilling Golden Boot race. Fulham strikers Aboubakar Kamara (29 goals) and Timmy Abraham (28) are within striking distance of tying Glenn Murray's modern-day record of 30 goals in a single Sky Bet season.

Summary: Aboubakar Kamara sends the home supporters into a frenzy with a game-opening goal in the 2nd minute. His record-tying 30th league goal of the season. Grant Gillam provided the through ball assist.

Fulham's new manager, former Liverpool star Adam Lallana, takes a sigh of relief after getting hounded by the press all morning for not including forward Timmy Abraham in the Starting XI or putting him on the bench. Talk about pressure to perform in your first game in charge.

But, it's off to a flying start!

Even better news, Swansea takes a 1-0 lead on Blackburn Rovers in the 16th minute. All signs are pointing up for Fulham in the early going.

More drama in the 18 minute! Kamara taken down in the box. Penalty! No question it's going to be Kamara stepping up to possibly give Fulham a 2-0 lead. But, more importantly, to break Glenn Murray's record...

Right down the middle... SAVED by Jonathan Mitchell.

Barnsley grabs the momentum and Kemar Roffe sends a rocket into the back of the net in the 27th minute to even the score at 1-1. Craven Cottage has been subdued.

Fulham is back on the attack in the 40th minute. Gillam is tackled just outside the box but Michael Jackson gathers the ball on the left wing. Looks into the box and sees multiple Fulham runners crashing the goal. It's a great ball...

Marcus Diamond with a world-class header! Spectacular!

Fulham will take a 2-1 lead into the locker room at halftime. Swansea City still up 1-0 on Blackburn and Ipswich Town drawing 0-0 with Preston North End. Crystal Palace also deadlocked 0-0 with Brentford, which means if that result holds and Fulham could move up to 4th in the standings with two more goals.

Speak it into existence. In the 52nd minute, Jonathan Leko beats his man on the wing and finds Kamara's head inside the box. GOAL! The record breaking! Kamara's 31st goal this season, and surely the dagger that gets Fulham to the promotion playoffs.

Less than minute later, Kamara has slipped behind Barnsley's backline. He's all alone. It has to be. YES! Kamara celebrates the historic occasion with a hat trick! 4-1 Fulham, now 4th in the standings.

And make it four, yes four goals for Kamara! Barnsley can't contain him. His 33rd goal this season gives Fulham a commanding 5-1 advantage in the 82nd minute.

The final whistle blows. Fulham keeps its season alive and does finish fourth in the league standings with Crystal Palace losing 1-0. That will set up a date with 5th Crystal Palace in the first round of the playoffs.

3rd Burnley and 6th Ipswich Town on the other side of the bracket, while 1st West Bromwich Albion and 2nd Brighton and Hove Albion have already clinched its spots to the Premier League next season.

Rating: 9.0 - We came to play, and Kamara is a beast.

Summary: On the brink of halftime, Jonathan Leko caps a nervy first half with a huge deadlock-breaking goal. Leko doubled up in the 68th minute when Timmy Abraham found him on the back post. 2-0 Fulham.

The euphory was short-lived as Tim Prescott got Crystal Palace on the board in the 73rd minute to get the game back within a goal.

However, Marcus Diamond picked out perennial goal scorer Aboubakar Kamara to restore the two-goal lead in the 86th minute. Giving Fulham three away goals heading into the second leg.

Ipswich Town beat Burnley, 2-0, in the other playoff semifinal first leg.

Rating: 8.0 - Feels like we are back to playing how we were at the start of the season. Got to keep that going for two more games.

Summary: Fulham plays excellent defense, possession-style football for 90 minutes before stealing a late goal off the head of Michael Jackson on a cross by Russell York to secure a victory. Captain keeper Marcus Bettinelli earns the shutout. Onward to the playoff final!

Rating: 7.0 - Not sure why head coach Adam Lallana keep me on for the whole game. Was fighting fatigue after the 70th minute, but powered through. One game left to decide if this season is a success or a failure.

We will face 6th Ipswich Town who beat Burnley 4-1 on aggregate.

Summary: One of the hardest games to watch if your a supporter of either of these two clubs. Jubilation of promotion for the winner, and the sadness of another season in the same division for the loser.

Fulham's last appearance in the Premier League was 12 seasons ago. Ipswich Town was in the top flight two seasons ago but nearly avoid a double relegation last year and now is in a position to rejoin the elite football clubs of England. Only one story can have a happy ending.

Oddsmakers have Fulham as the favourites. They have won their last five games and appear to have regained the scorching hot form they were in at the start of the season. Ipswich Town ended the regular season with back-to-back losses against Fulham and Preston North End, but recovered in time to eliminate Burnley in the first round of the playoffs.

If this game is anything like the 4-3 thriller we saw the last time this two teams clashed on April 26, then strap in for a wild unpredictable affair.

The whistle blows, we are underway!

The first real scoring chance belongs to Fulham as Marcus Diamond lines up a free kick on the right side of the box. Looks to be about 35 yards with a bad angle so a shot seems unlucky. Yep, it's a lofted cross into the box. Lots of bodies to aim at.

One change at halftime: Ipswich brings on a fresh striker in Jason Cummings for Kapustka, who was on a yellow card.

It doesn't take long for Fulham's defense to crumble and allow another golden chance for Ipswich Town, a little over three minutes to be exact. On a ball played from the back, Boga sprints past everybody and looks across his body.

Ipswich Town has clawed back from a 2-0 deficit. The scenes. All even at 2-2 in the 49th minute. How quickly things can change.

The next moment of action comes in the 56th minute. Diamond is standing over yet another free kick. An opportunity for a third assist and restore Fulham's lead. Could it be?
