Giro d'Italia Stage 17


A massive breakaway group today. Some teams had even 2 riders there.


Seeing that they have a good chance to get the win today the escapes start to attack each other


And Oroz took the race on his own


The others came really fast in the final metres hoping that he will crack


But that didn't happend and the Spanish/Basque takes the biggest win of his carrer


Too bad that the escapes weren't caught by the pack as we domintated the sprint there. Cav could took there his 4th win this year in Giro, with Boom, Van Emden and Ignatiev right after him


An important thing that happend in the pack was Pozzovivo's crash


Though that he got fast back in the saddle he coudn't finish the stage in the same time with the pack

That Giro is really becoming tougher and tougher! With Schleck and Dekker with more than 10min of delay I see that must be really hard to compete for a top10 with Rogers...

He was 16th before this stage. After Pozzovivo's crash he is 15th, no chance for top 10

Siutsou couldn't won more than a climb today and just 10 points were added to his total


Bruseghin leads the pack on the last climb in this year's Giro, on Isola 2000.


An the first move is made by the Dutch talent, Robert Gesink


With no other team-mates left in the main group, Cunego needs to do the chasing job himself


But Ricco attacks and Cunego has to go after him


And soon Cunego proves to be the strongest once more, he leads alone


Ricco and Pellizotti are chasing him down


Soler is the fourth man on the road at the moment


Then a group with all the stars Simoni, Sella, Gesink and the others


With 3km to go Damiano still leads. If he wins today the Giro is almost over and Siutsou will lose the green/KoM jersey


But just before the final kilometre Ricco and Pellizotti did it. They caught Cunego


The fight for the stage win is going to be once more between Ricco and Cunego as Pellizotti doesn't seem to be intereted for that


Impressive acceleration by Ricco...


And he wins and Ricardo is now in pole-position for the final win in Giro as I think he can get those 33 seconds from Cunego in the last TT. It is a long TT and Ricco is better than Cunego on time-trial so many specialists think that he is the big favourite, but we will see, still 2 flat stage to go except that TT.

The breakaway.


A lot of Liquigas riders at the back just before the final sprint. And sudenly one of them is down


Numer 37... It's Nibali!


Somehow Van Emden lost Cav's wheel, again.


Only 3 riders in the train now for us. Ignatiev and Boom ready to put Cavendish in the perfect position


And Mark took perfectly the wheel of Boom for the last 2km of the stage


But Bettini is in our splipstream, looking dangerous for the stage win


Cav takes the lead with a beatifull acceleration


Bettini and Ricco (?!) are coming really fast...


But they can't stop, Mark Cavendish of taking his fourth Giro stage win


Van Emden wasn't there to help Cav but he seems very happy for the Brits' victory

At last something to celebrate for

ricco will win the giro

yeah I think that too. A very long TT (over 50km if I think) and Ricco has 69TT while Cunego only 66 plus Ricco was in better form in the last stages, Cunego won that time in the first stages.

Let's all keep our fingers crossed and hope that Cunego can still beat Ricco.

Lang was the first rider to come with a 'time' there


But then the Columbia army came and everyone forgot about Lang. Wiggins is now the leader


With Zabriskie and Ignatiev on the podium to support the Brit.=


Boom and Pinotti performed good as well


Clement, Bruseghin, Gutierrez and Schumacher had good times, but can one of them win? The favourites aren't great TT'ers maybe except Rogers, Dekker and Nibali


So here they are. Rogers had a good time but not for even a top5 stage, at least he got a place in top 15 overall beating Kohl


Nibali was there second behind Guttierez. Only the Dutch TT Champion can stop the Spanish TT champion win today


And Thomas Dekker is unbeliveble. He beats Gutierrez's time with almost 3 minutes. That's for sure enough to win today. Also his team-mate and compatriot, Robert Gesink surprised with a great time today


And now the battle for the pink jersey. Ricco was clearly in front of Cunego at the 2 intermediate posts, but what about now?


Cunego finishes and... he lost somewhere at 1 minute to Ricco and just lost the Giro. Only a crash can help him now getting the pink jersey back from Ricco but that's not very likely to happen.

56km... so 3 minutes could be normal as Dekker is a better climber than the other TT'ers so he had more energy left in his feet
