Stage 3

Today is a flat stage where the climbers will rest there legs before the two mountain stages. Lewis was able to sit comfortably knowing his KOM jersey was safe for another day since there was only one KOM sprint today. As usual there was a group that got away from the peloton. We tried to get Lewis in there but he was too tired after the long ride yesterday.



We decided to stay near the front and to let Katusha do all the work. The breakaway peaked at 5 minutes but thanks to Katusha they were brought in well before the finish.



Renshaw was not feeling well today and when he tried to catch one of the other sprinters wheel he fell back into the middle of the pack. Surprisingly with 1km to go it was Tomei who was in the lead, because all of the sprinters were waiting.



Just as it began to look like Tomei would win, he was passed by Arashiro and Geslin. Arashiro was able to celebrate taking home his first major victory of the year.

Stage 4

Most of today's stage is mostly flat accept for the small climb at the end of the stage. It will be tough to gain a lot of time today. As expected there were many riders who tried to get away early. It took a few attempts before they got the right combination. There were no real threats in the breakaway so they were allowed to get a lead of around 5 minutes.



Thanks to some chasing by a large number of riders, they were brought back as we reached the final climb, but for most of the race it was Fuji and Katusha who were doing most of the work.



At the bottom of the climb Monfort attacked. He caught everyone by surprise and immediately picked up a gap. But, both Meier and I, were able to keep up. Monfort turned around expecting to see no one in sight but to his surprise I was right there.



In a group that included Popovych, Pellizoti, Rovny, and many others, I sent up Meier to try to drop some of the riders. As Meier got tired, I followed the wheel of Rovny and forced him to take me up the mountain.



No one was willing to do any work and I could feel the peloton breathing down my neck. I decided with about 6km to go that I had to attack if I wanted to win. I pounded the petals and attacked the leading group.



I expected to be joined by some other riders. I turned around and saw that I had a considerable gap over the other riders. I powered to the finish line and took a big victory.



I won by only 34 seconds but I put a minute on Rovny. I now sat comfortably in the yellow jersey but tomorrow is the toughest stage yet.

Great win!

This was supposed to be a tune up before the Giro but the lack of competition (77 mountain is the next best rider here) makes it impossible to lose. Plus my fitness is 98

Wow. Hesjedal's Fitness was 94 at one point so I stopped him from racing for a whole month and its still 82.

Stage 5



Today is the toughest stage. With the time trial coming tomorrow all I need to do is make sure I keep a safe distance ahead of some of the top time trialers, like Rovny.
After some failed attempts a group of 7 riders broke away. They ended up splitting with 5 leaders in front and 2 riders following about a minute behind for most of the race.



Katusha and Fuji kept the lead around 7 minutes at the end of the 2nd climb. We decided to weaken the field and bring back the break, so we sent Lewis, Close, and Swift up front to put some pressure on. As we approached the final climb the peloton was down to around 50 riders. Unfortunately, the strong pace had dropped Meier and Peterson, leaving only me and Froome in the lead group. The first riders to attack were Popovych and Pellizotti.



There gap never reached anything larger than 1 minute. Once Monfort and a few other favorites attacked, I decided that I needed to go too.



I caught up to Pellizotti, which now had Sprick instead of Popovych. We made the leading group of 3 and built a lead of a minute.



I could tell that they were tiring, so with 10 kilometers left I decided to try and get to the finish by myself.



I was able to hold off the rest of the field and take a commanding lead. With 1 kilometer left I realized that not only had I won the stage, but I had locked up the race. I threw my hands in the air and celebrated a fantastic victory.



It took about 2 minutes for someone else to finish. My GC lead had grown to 4 minutes and it would be impossible for me to lose that much time tomorrow.

Domination! Great job!

I arrived back to the hotel today to see the headlines on cyclingnews.con "Vaughters says he wants Cav." Reportedly when asked who his main target was going to be during the off season he told them that we would be going after Cavendish. I think he would be a great addition to our already talented group of sprinters.

Make sure JV tells Cav to be a little less cocky and also better bbehaved when celebrating if he does sign for. Garmin

Tour de Romandie


Stage 6

Today is a 20km hilly time trial. It will be impossible for anyone to make up enough time on me to take the yellow jersey away.
Tony Martin should have been the favorite today but throughout this race he has proven that he is not in top shape. He finished in 10th, 52 seconds back.



Ivan Rovny was another one of the favorites and he set a great time. When he finished he was in 3rd place. He ended up in 5th only 37 seconds back.



The surprise of the race was the performance of Meier. Despite disappointing in the last couple of stages, he managed to set the best time when he came threw, and at the end of the day, he finished 3rd , just 25 seconds back. Vasil Kiryienka came threw not much longer after Meier and beat his time by 18 seconds and pushed himself into 6th overall.



Fredrik Kessiakoff was the 2nd to last person to go. He knew 1st place was out of reach but he still wanted to hold on to 2nd.



I was the last rider to go and all I had to do was stay on the bike, but of course I was trying to win the stage. I jumped out of the starting gate, feeling great.



At the time check I was in 33rd place, but I had saved all my energy for the climb at the end. As I passed by the lake, I had to focus ahead and make sure I didn’t lose anytime.



As I approached the finish line I could see Fredrik Kessiakoff just ahead.



I sprinted to the finish line and took the best time by 7 seconds. Kessiakoff had finished 4th and maintained 2nd place. I was shocked by my great victory and was able to celebrate a great Tour de Romandie, which included 4 stage wins.

Giro Preview

GC Favorites
R. Gesink – He will be getting the entire support of his team including Pellizotti, who has proven to be good in the mountains.

V. Nibali – Although his team is not as strong as others, Nibali could power up by himself and may have to.

F. Schleck – He has a great team around him and is one of the best riders on the hilly stages. He may not be as good of a climber but he can make up the time on the hills.

D.Pozzovivo – He has remained relatively quite recently but he is as good of a climber as anyone here. Expect him to be right up there at the end of the 3 weeks.

M.Soler – He is not very good in time trials but he is definitely a pure climber, who has a chance to take a stage or two.


Sprint Favorites
Rabobank – They will be the favorites for every single sprint. W.Stroetinga, T. Bos, and J.J Haedo will all be riding in support for Tom Boonen. Expect Boonen to win every sprint.

A.Petacchi – He is the only rider who has a chance to take a stage away from Boonen.


Team Preview
Leader
D. Martin – I am on top form coming into the race. I feel great after a great warm-up in Romandie. With a strong team around me I have a chance to finish up with the favorites.

Lieutenants
T.Dekker – Dekker will be a big help in the mountains and even bigger on the couple hilly stages. It would not surprise me if he finishes in the top 10.

T.Lowe – He has proven time and time again that he is a great climber. He will be the work horse in the mountains and we need him to be on the top of his game

Teammates
C. Froome – During the Tour de Romandie, Froome was even more helpful than Meier. He will be able to survive on the climbs but probably won’t contend for any stages.

C. Meier – He is a talented climber who just hasn’t come into form yet. If he can peak at the right time he can be as good as Dekker or Lowe.

T. Peterson – Peterson will probably get sent in the breaks or will be the one forced to get water. He is a pretty good climber but is not nearly as good as the favorites.

Sprinters
Sutton will have Bellis and Dodds to lead him out. It will be tough to beat Rabobank but we are confident that we can get a stage win somewhere.

The organizers decided to make the Giro hell. Stages 1-13 has only one mountain stage, while stages 14-20 consists of 6 mountain stages and a hilly time trial, all without a rest day. I expect to see some worn out riders by the end of the race.

You should save your energy before mountains so
