Stage 5
All the riders are tired after yesterdays tough stage so today is the best chance for a breakaway to make it. 8 riders made up the morning break, and they built up a gap of 7 minutes.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Tirreno%20Adriatico/dont%20screw%20up/Thebreak.jpg

There lead stayed at 7 minutes for most of the day and with 30 kilometers to go it was still at 7 minutes. The peloton frantically chased, but it was too late, the breakaway would win. Gaudin was forced to lead out but despite this he still held on to the victory in front of Mondory.

Stage 6
Almost all the riders in front of me in the GC can't time trial well so I have a great chance to move up some positions. My biggest challenge would be limiting my losses to Kreuziger to less than 8 seconds. If so then I have a great shot at taking the U25 jersey. I was happy with my performance as I finished in 7th, the exact same time as Kreuziger.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Tirreno%20Adriatico/dont%20screw%20up/Me.jpg

Wiggins wasn't on the best of form so he could only manage a 5th place finish.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Tirreno%20Adriatico/dont%20screw%20up/Wiggins.jpg

Karpets could only finish 4th despite being one of the favorites. He has shown that he isn't on form yet.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Tirreno%20Adriatico/dont%20screw%20up/Karpets.jpg

Stijn Devolder showed off his new colors and finished in 3rd place for Liquigas.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Tirreno%20Adriatico/dont%20screw%20up/Devolder.jpg

Stef Clement was obviously on form because he finished 2nd, only 2 seconds behind the stage winner.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Tirreno%20Adriatico/dont%20screw%20up/Clement.jpg

No surprises at Leipheimer takes the win and jumps all the way to first place.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Tirreno%20Adriatico/dont%20screw%20up/Leipheimer.jpg

I manage to move all the way to 5th place overall while Scarponi is barely holding off Cunego for 3nd place overall.

Stage 7
The final stage is completely flat, with an average gradient of 0%. This will definitely be a day for the sprinters. There were a couple of riders who tried to prevent the sprinters from having all the fun.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Tirreno%20Adriatico/dont%20screw%20up/Thebreak-1.jpg

They were caught 60 kilometers from the finish leaving the finish to the sprinters. I was leading the train followed by Millar, then Renshaw, and then Farrar. When I peeled off with 5 kilometers to go, Renshaw dropped off too. Luckily Farrar saw this and went around Renshaw and took Millar's wheel. But this left Farrar sprinting from 2.5 kilometers out. Farrar was passed by a bunch of riders and Petacchi won the stage while Breschel and Cavendish made it 2-3 for Columbia.

I finished up with a rider preview of most of the riders but I'm too tired to finish tonight. I hope I can finish the Giro before I leave for a week on tuesday when I head to Atlanta!! Pfft then when I get back I restart school so the story could really slow down then. but until tuesday, expect frequent updates. Now im off to bed.

Daniel Hawke – He hasn’t had any big results since he joined us last year. His only top ten result was a 5th place finish in Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen last year. He’s only 23 years old and has a long future ahead. As of now he is working on improving his time trial.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/DanielHawke.jpg

Campbell Dodds – Dodds is a 24 year old sprinter with a promising future in the cobbles. He easily could be a rider very similar to Matthew Goss, someone who can sprint and ride the cobbles. In 2010 he came in 3rd on stage 4 of the Vuelta a Espana. That is only a small glimpse in what he can to do.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/CampbellDodds.jpg

Greg Scoullar – Scoullar is only 20 years old and may have one of the brightest futures on the team. He hasn’t had many chances to show off his talents since joining us but this year he could have his best chance. He will be a great sprinter and will add to the good sprinters on the team.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/GregScoullar.jpg

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/clickablelink.png

matt493
Michael Friedman – Friedman has yet to live up to the expectations that were placed on him since joining the team. He was supposed to improve into a good cobbles rider but he has not taken any top 10’s in 3 years. His contract expires at the end of the season and it is uncertain whether he will return or not.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/MichaelFriedman.jpg

Thomas Peterson – Peterson is a good a climber with a long future in cycling. He’s only 24 years old and is already a very good stage racer. He hasn’t had any big wins since a top 10 finish on stage 2 in the Settimana Coppie Bartali.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/ThomasPeterson.jpg

Dominique Rollin – After failing to get any big results for Cervelo in 2009 he had a breakout year in 2010. He finished 2nd in the opening time trial in the Tour of Qatar. He also took a 3rd place on stage 4 of the Bayern – Rundfahrt. He finished 4-10 8 times including two stages in the Tour of Missouri.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/DominiqueRollin.jpg

matt493
Christian Meier – Meier has made significant strides since joining the team in 2009. In 2009 he finished 1st on stage 2 of the Settimana Coppi e Bartali plus a couple of 4th- 10th place finishes. In 2010 he finished 3rd on stage 3 of the Tour of Missouri. He is currently the National Champion of Canada. He’s only 25 years old so he has a lot more years in him.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/ChristianMeier.jpg

Danny Pate – One of the most surprising riders is Pate. He has improved into an elite time trialist and because of this he had a great year in 2010. He won 4 stages last year, 1 second place, and 2 3rd places. He’s already 32 years old and may be on the downhill. He has a great chance of taking some more wins this year.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/DannyPate.jpg

David Millar – Millar is 33 years old but has still kept on racing like a young kid. He is clearly the leader on the team. He taught me as much about cycling as anyone else in my years racing with him. 2009 was slightly disappointing for him, taking no wins the whole year. Last year, however, he won stages in the Dauphine Libere and Vuelta a Espana. He also took 14 2nd-10th finishes last year. He may not be the rider he used to be but he is still one of the best.

Chris Froome – He joined our team last year and took some pretty good results. He came in 5th in the British TT Championships. He also took some other good results in races including Criterium du Dauphine Libere, British Championships, and the Tour de pologne. He is one of the best British Road Racers and it is pretty exciting to be racing with him.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/ChrisFroome.jpg

Ricardo Van der Velde – He’s one of our biggest Northern Classics helpers to Maaskant. He is currently injured but if he is back by the the big cobbles races then he will be a great big help. He even finished in 7th place in the Netherlands National Championships last year. He is continuing to improve and has a good and long future with Garmin.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/RicardoVanderVelde.jpg

Ryder Hesjedal – I’ve worked very closely with Hesjedal in a lot of races and know that he is a great rider. He has had some big results including. 4 wins, 4 2nd, 5 3rds ,and 23 places between 4th – 10th. He is a great climber and has been very helpful to me in lots of different races. He is 30 years old so he still has a few years.

Christopher Sutton – Sutton is a very strong sprinter. He’s 26 years old and has had some good wins since joining the team. In 2009 he finished 2nd place on stage 11 of the Tour de France. He also took 13 4th – 10th places in races including Tour of Britain, Tour de France, and many more races. Last year he won a stage in the Vuelta a Espana and so far this year he has take 3 2nd places so far.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/ChristopherSutton.jpg

Bradley Wiggins – For some reason, Wiggins has not aged since joining the team. He is still 29 years old and is the British TT Champion. He has won countless time trails and has a chance to be a World TT Champion. I’m sure Garmin will want to keep Wiggins from signing with other teams.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/BradleyWiggins.jpg

Trent Lowe – Has progressively gotten better every year. In 2009 he didn’t take any 1st – 3rd places but last year he took a win, a 2nd place, and a 3rd place. He won the Australian Championships last year but was unable to keep it this year. So far in 2011 he, won the Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca and won a stage. He is only 26 years old and will probably win a lot of smaller races and maybe if he improves in climbing, he can take a stage in a GT.

David Zabriskie – Last year Zabriskie only took one win but it was a big one. He won the World ITT Championships last year. In 2009 he won 3 time trials including the American Championships. He is clearly one of the best time trialers in the world and he is a good climber. He will be with the team until at least 2012 but then after that his future is unknown.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/DavidZabriskie.jpg

Tyler Farrar – Farrar is a great sprinter. He has won countless stages and he is only 25. In 2009 he won 3 Vuelta a Espana stages and a Tour de France stage. So far in his career he has won 15 stages including most of them being from Pro Tour races. He can be one of the best American sprinters of all time. His contract ends this year but I’m sure Garmin will do everything to sign him.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/TylerFarrar.jpg

Thomas Dekker – Dekker is one of our top riders and joined us in 2010 after having a great year in 2009. In 2010 he finished in 9th place in the UCI Pro Tour and took a stage win in the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and Paris – Nice. He also won both the Netherlands TT and RR Championships. He is already ranked 10th so far this year and had a chance at improving on his 9th place from last year. His contract ends this year so he could be up for grabs.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/ThomasDekker.jpg

Martijn Maaskant – He is our main cobbles rider and still hasn’t lived up to the expectations since coming in 4th in Paris Roubaix in 2008. In 2009 he won the final stage of the Vuelta a Espana and last year he won Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. He is only 27 years old so he still has a long time to finally take a win in Paris Roubaix. This year the team hopes he can win a Northern Classic.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Rider%20Preview/MartijnMaaskant.jpg

Christian Vandevelde – Christian Vandevelde is a very good climber who came in 6th in 2009 and finished 4th in 2010 in the Tour de France. He has finished 2nd twice in a Tour de France stage. He is 33 years old and has a chance to improve on his 4th place finish last year. He is one of the biggest leaders on the team and I have learned a lot from him throughout my years racing with him.

Doesn't it get confusing having Van der Velde and Vandevelde in the same team? :-)
