Opening stage is a 38 kilometer time trial. Most of it is either uphill or downhill so expect some big time differences.

Thomas Swift and Craig Lewis also have joined Garmin signing contracts with the team. There are still more signings to come.

The profile is of a normal stage but its a time trial.

Goals for Tour de France

My plan for the Tour de France is to make sure Vandevelde is in good position throughout the race and to be a Lieutenant. A stage win would be a plus but I'm not expecting too much. We want to hold the jersey for a while and hopefully a top 5 for Vandevelde and a top 15 for me. One of the early stages is a 63 kilometer time trial. With a team that includes Dekker, Wiggins, Millar, Zabriskie, and Vandevelde we should dominate that stage and gain time on other favorites. I'm not going for the KOM this year and will spend most of my time beside Vandevelde. I also have to be aware and avoid crashes which have caused problems last year and in the Dauphine Libere.

Yellow Jersey Contenders
L.Leipheimer - One of the strongest time trialers in the race and with 3 long time trials it could benefit him.
A.Contador - Last years winner might be working for Leipheimer. Could fight for the GC but only if Leipheimer crashes out like last year.
R.Gesink - Last years biggest surprise has progressed nicely and has taken some big wins earlier in the year but will his anger with his team effect his performance?
A.Schleck - He will be looking to avoid crashes like the one that ended his tour last year. Came in 2nd behind Contador in Tirreno Adriatico. He lost because of his time trialing. Will it haunt him in the Tour too?
S.Sánchez - He hasn't shown his full potential in a grand tour yet but with his skill on the downhill and being a good climber should give him at least a chance to improve on his 4th place last year.
C.Sastre - After winning the Tour in 2008 he never was really in the race last year making a surge too late to win.
C.Evans - He will benefit with all the time trials and this year is his best shot to ditch the streak of 2nd places.
L.Sánchez - Last year he was the leader of the team, even over Valverde, this year he is the leader despite having the best climber in cycling, Dennis Menchov.
C.Vandevelde - With a team built for the Mountains he will have the full support of climbers like Martin, Lowe, Dekker, and Wiggins. Can he improve on his recent success?
S.Devolder - Will need to be on top form if he wants to even have a chance at making the podium. He hasn't quite proven himself as an elite climber.
R.Kreuziger - The young rider will definitely be a contender for the U25 jersey but can he contend for the Yellow Jersey?

Outside Shots
V.Karpets - Might not be a strong enough climber but he should at least be top 15
D. Cunego - He has won the Giro.
M. Rogers - Seems to be Mr. Unlucky but it could be his year to make the podium.
A. Valverde - Two years in a row that he has to play second fiddle to a far more unexperienced and younger rider.

Next up is Green Jersey Contenders but for now I'm off to bed.

Green Jersey Cotenders
There is a noticeable lack of sprinteras. The only big names are Eisel and Farrar. This means Farrar has a great chance at a stage win and possibly the Green Jersey, It will be a fight between Eisel and Farrar.

Tream Preview

Leader
Christian Vandevelde - Coming in 6th last year was with very little help in the Mountains. This year he will have much more help and has a chance at a podium especially if he does well during the time trials.

Liuetenants
Daniel Martin - Last years KOM winner should really could help Vandevelde especially on steep climbs. Has enough skills to stick with the favorites in the Mountains.

Thomas Dekker - He is far more useful in the hills than in the Mountains and will try to help Vandevelde in the Mountians and on the hills.

Team Mates
Trent Lowe - A good climber that won't be able to stick with the leaders on the steep climbs but should be able to help out Vandevelde a lot.

David Zabriskie - He is here for all the time trials. Not a great climber bu decent enough not to fall off on small climbs.

David Millar - Also only here for the time trials. If there is a 147 kilometer time trial he has a chance to gain a lot of time.

Bradley Wiggins - He is a decent climber and an elite time trialer.

Sprinters
Tyler Farrar - Won a stage last year but was very disappointing that he couldn't win anymore.

Christopher Sutton - He is here to lead out Farrar and possibly a top ten in some stages.

I can give you a profile of the race. Lets see ... flat stages are full of mountains, mountain stages are flat. There are cobbles in some stages. There is a 40 km stage with time gaps despite it being a normal stage and a 147 km time trial. What the hell

Stage 1
Today's opening stage is a long time trial. The 1st half of the stage is going up while the 2nd half of the stage is going down. This benefits time trialers who can also climb. Wiggins was a little disappointing coming in 12th place finishing 2 and a half minutes back of the winner.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2010/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%201/Wiggins.jpg

I surprised everyone, including myself by finishing in 10th place. I sure hope the National team manager was watching this.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2010/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%201/Me.jpg

Millar looked very strong and when he came through he was in 1st place but he only finished in 9th place 2 minutes and 15 seconds behind.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2010/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%201/Millar.jpg

In 5th place was David Zabriskie who was showing off his USA TT champion jersey.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2010/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%201/Zabriskie.jpg

The terrain and length was perfect for Leipheimer but he could only manage 4th.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2010/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%201/Leipheimer.jpg

In 3rd was Karpets who shows he can be a contender this year but did finish 1 minute and 50 seconds back.

Vanvedevelde came in 2nd and the winner was Dekker who is an elite time trialer and puncheur so the stage was perfect for him.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2010/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%201/Dekker.jpg

Cancellara disappointed everyone and finished 17th 2 minutes and 45 seconds back proving this isn't an ordinary opening stage.

Stage 2 is supposed to be flat but I would be surprised if many sprinters can stay with the leading group.
