Vandevelde won't move much farther up though. The guys in front are too good. I think I might stay out of the breaks and help Vandevelde from now on.

Actually the next stage has 130 KOM points on the line so I may try to take those.

Stage 17
There are a lot of climbs during the stage and there are a lot of KOM points on the line. One of the first riders to attack was Gesink. He was in 4th place overall in the KOM so I had to follow him.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%2017/Iattack.jpg

Eventually I caught up to Gesink. We worked well together and built up a large gap. He won most of the KOM sprints but since I was always right behind him in 2nd I didn’t lose enough to lose 1st. We kept building on our lead and it looked like we might win.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%2017/MeandGesink.jpg

With about 10 kilometers left we were caught by Gesink’s teammate Menchov and he went on to win his first stage of the 2009 Tour de France.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%2017/Menchovwins.jpg

I still managed to hold on to 8th and I have also locked in the KOM jersey for the whole race.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%2017/Ifinish8th.jpg

On a side note, Sutton is 11th in points and I think that's pretty spectacular for a guy who was only brought here to lead out Farrar.

In other news. Menchov fills the open spot left by the leaving of Valverde at Caisse and Boonen will join Rabobank now that menchov left.

Stage 18
Today is a very important time trial. Since GC is not important to me anymore, then this stage isn’t important for me, but Vandevelde is currently in 6th place and he has a chance to move closer to 5th place if he sets a great time. I set a great time and felt great but still only managed to finish in 25th place overall.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%2018/Martin.jpg

In 3rd place was Vladamir Karpets who set a great time and when he finished was in 1st place.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%2018/Karpets.jpg

But when Evans came through he beat Karpets’ time by 8 seconds.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%2018/CadelEvans.jpg

The winner of the stage was Alberto Contador who extends his lead even farther ahead of L.L. Sanchez.

Stage 19
Today is classified as a flat stage but a small climb at the end will eliminate most of the sprinters from contention. Our whole team is very tired so we stayed out of the breaks and just relaxed in the peloton but there were some riders who dared to go on an attack.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%2019/Thebreak.jpg

They were caught long before the finish and on the final climb Sutton was dropped so we didn’t have a sprinter. Kirchen, who loves this king of finish, went on to win ahead of Damiano Cunego.

Stage 20
Today is the final Mountain stage and also Vandevelde’s last chance to move up in the GC. The 21.2 kilometers averaging 7.6 percent gradient promise to be epic, as anyone can still win - or lose - the 2009 Tour de France today. It was a surprise to me that the peloton was so in control. No breakaways ever got farther than a minute ahead and coming up to Mount Ventoux everyone was all together. I was able to help Vandevelde much more today and helped him up the Mountain but with around 6 kilometers left, Contador and Sastre were proving to be too strong.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%2020/SastreandContador.jpg

Eventually Contador dropped Sastre and went on to a solo victory and secures his Yellow Jersey.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/Tour%20de%20France/Stage%2020/SastreandContador.jpg

Gesink surprised everyone and finished in 2nd place and moves up to 3rd overall! Vandevelde holds on to 6th overall and finishes in 9th place. I manage to show my strength and finish in 13th place. After a surprising start to the Tour L.L. Sanchez has fallen all the way to 5th overall. The Tour de France is pretty much over and I head into Paris still holding the Polka Dot Jersey.
