Stage 11
The stage after the first rest day is up and down all day long. The total amount of height metres of the 162 kilometres between VerÃn and the Estación de Montaña Manzaneda is 3856, with the finish after a 27 kilometre climb (average gradient 5.1%) at an altitude of 1750m.
69km to go
As more often this Vuelta, it's
Gregory Bernard in the BOTD. He can collect KOTM-points this way, and we don't have to chase the BOTD. Today, he is in the attack with Ruiz (AndalucÃa), Danielson (Garmin), Fleeman (Sky), Sprick (Europcar), Rubiano (Radio Shack), Crawford (Qantas) and Prades (Euskaltel). With 69km to go, the margin to the peloton is 6'04, and decreasing.
32km to go
The peloton arrives at the summit of the Alto de Ermida, with the Dexia-boys doing the pace for JJ Cobo. The 8 leaders have a margin of 3'08, with Kanstantsin Siutsou (Movistar), Remy Di Gregorio (Europcar) and Mikel Nieve (Astana) busy bridging the gap.
24km to go
The final ascend to the Estaciön de Montaña Manzaneda (from now on it's called Manzaneda) has begun, and with 24 of the 27km to go, the first major attack takes place. Amets Txurukka (GC's 9th) attacks, and he gets countered by Alberto Contador! Yes, the number 4 of the GC launches a surprisingly early attack.
17km to go
Di Gregorio, Nieve and Siutsou have joined the leading group (
Bernard has been dropped already), and now not only Txurukka and Contador join them, but also GC's 3rd Carlos Barredo. Apparantly, Movistar is planning a coup here to regain the red jersey. They already have a margin of 50 seconds to the chasing group, with Dexia still leading.
16km to go
When also Juan Mauricio Soler (GC's 11th) attacks out of the chasing peloton, Juan José Cobo (GC's 2nd) decides that this is enough and counters. And so does Mikel Astarloza (GC's 9th), trying to become the 4t Movistar-rider in the leading group.
At this point in the race,
Robert Gesink has only got
Jelle Vanendert left to help him, and the Belgian gradually brings him to the leading group.
12km to go
When
Gesink arrives at the front of the leading group, the Movistar-guys realize that they can't shake the GC-leader off, and try it again. This time, Siutsou and Barredo are the ones.
11km to go
But that attack is a pretty weak one, as the 2 get caught immediately. Next rider to attack is GC's 7th Robert Kiserlovski. The Croatian creates a gap of 11 seconds, when Cobo and Javier Moreno (GC's 5th) counter.
Gesink still keeps on ascending in his own pace.
8km to go
All get caught and the leading group still is very big, with 22 riders in it. Then with 8km to go, Cobo attacks again.
Robert Gesink starts to get a bit irritated by these continuous atacks, and counters.
7km to go
What
Gesink expected also happens. Cobo has to stop his attack after a few hundreds of metres, not having the energy left after 2 earlier attacks. This is the time for
Gesink to attack himself, and he leaves Cobo behind!
5km to go
Within 2 kilometres, he creates a margin of 28 seconds to the chasing group. And apparantly, the Spanish riders have decided to cooperate, as Astarloza does the work in the chase, followed by Mosquera, Contador, Cobo and Moreno!
2km to go
But even the Spanish armada can't beat the lone Dutch cyclist.
Gesink increases his margin to the chasing Spaniards to '36, with only 2 kilometres to go. And these 2 are the steepest of the climb.
Finish
And it's stage win number 3 for
Robert Gesink! He has saved enough energy for the last steep kilometre and stays out of reach. He has even increased the margin, as Juan José Cobo finishes in 2nd at '49, leading a 16-rider group.

Today's Winner
Word from the DS
Gesink showed today who is the strongest rider here in the Vuelta. But I fear we'll get dozens of attacks in the following stages....
