Österreich-Rundfahrt, Stage 6
After the hard mountains, the riders are back on flat terrain. It still should be a tough stage, 202 kms with lots of small climbs – the overall contenders will certainly aim to limit their energy loss before the decisive time trial tomorrow.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
Just as stated above, I'll try to recover as good as possible for tomorrow. In the meantime, Tiziano Dall'Antonia will try to get a nice result in the sprint, as he should be able to pass the hills without too much problems. Also, we'll send either Guarnieri or Sabatini in a break.
Km 2: | First attacker of the day: Vegard Stake Laengen (Joker). Sabatini tries to follow. | . | Km 9: | Four riders around Sabatini are in front now. Doesn't look like they would get away though. | . | | | Km 15: | Indeed they're caught but Sabatini tries it again immediatly. | . | Km 22: | Rabobank Continental and NetApp aren't willing to let him go so he cancels the try. | . | | | Km 28: | With just a very small acceleration, Dominik Nerz takes the first intermediate sprint. 6 more seconds for him. | . | Km 33: | Among the next escapees is Jacopo Guarnieri. | . | Km 82: | After a long struggle, they are all caught again. | . | | | Km 84: | As no one else wants to, Nerz takes the five mountain points as well. He's only one point behind Tschopp now. | . | Km 107: | A group of three including Timothy Duggan has found themselves 1'30 in front of the peloton. | . | | | Km 122: | Zdenek Stybar and morning attacker Laengen joined them so we have now something we could actually call a break of the day. | . | | | Km 165: | A weak BotD though. At the last intermediate sprint, they are caught again. Nerz uses the small confusion that creates and takes another six seconds. | . | Km 174: | It's really weird: No one gives anything on the intermediate classifications. Nerz again sais thanks and overtakes the lead in the mountain classification. | . | Km 200: | With two kilometers to go and the sprint about to start, the game crashed! As I was so happy about the outcome of the stage until here, I decided not to play it again but to sim it and edit the classifications afterwards, fitting to the course of the stage so far. I hope that doesn't bother you but I was too frustrated. Here's the simulated outcome and the adjusted classifications: |

Okay, so our breakaway plans didn't succeed. But it turned out even better! I got an extra 12 seconds on Tschopp, which might be valuable, plus I took over the lead in the mountain ranking. And all that without almost any effort.
In addition, Fabio Sabatini got the best result of his season with his sixth spot. Quite decent.
So, tomorrow is the decisive time trial. I'm hoping the best!
See you,

That was very smart, perhaps these twelve seconds give you the overall win! Good luck in the time trial!

Great riding so far. A pity that it was not enough on the downhill stage with a stage win. But 2nd should be secured with a bit of luck even the win.

Very good ride, damn I hate the AI whenever they don't care about any of the intermediate points, thankfully happens less than in PCM 10. Daily form will be a key I'd say tomorrow, if you'll get +4 or +5 than you have a good chance to go for the victory. Good luck

Ah, 12 seconds shorter, only 1'27 behind. You have a chance, but I'm afraid that Tschopp wil fly tomoroow and rides the best ITT of his life...

@ fcancellara: Thanks. I'll definetely need luck!
@ sutty68: Indeed. Without a fantastic daily form, I don't have much hope.
@ roturn: The stage win would have been great, but it was a good move anyway, also for the moral, at least once being able to beat Tschopp
@ baia: You're right. 2nd is really good, that's for sure! Plus, I'll also have the two classifications (mountain+young).
@ Alakagom: Yeah, I took a bit advantage of the AI there, but I thought that the AI is often enough against me so what the hell And sure, without a good daily shape, I can forget about the win, but even with +4 or +5, it'll be hard...
@ FreitasPCM: Thanks
@ dienblad: Prophetic words... Tschopp did indeed great, but see yourselves if it was enough for him:

Österreich-Rundfahrt, Stage 7
The time trial will decide the overall. It's not too long but 32 kms can make a difference. The hills won't be the deciding factors here so the rouleurs have an advance here.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
My shape is coming closer to the peak. Today, I'll have to give my very, very best if I want to have a chance to win the overall. 1'27 is possible, but it'll be a tough challenge.
For the report, I've decided that it should focus on the Top 5 only.
22nd | Rasmus Quaade's time lasted for long, but as the Top 5 head out, the time to beat was set by Patrick Gretsch. Best Liquigas rider so far is Alan Marangoni on 1'07. | | 48'24 | . | | | 5th | Tejay Van Garderen, today's top favorite, crosses himself as he leaves the start box. He has to make up 1'12 on Rutkiewicz, who already waits to start. | . | | | 1st | This is today's hottest duel! Johan Tschopp sees Dominik Nerz shooting out on the road. 1'27 devide them. | . | 5th | Van Garderen sets the new best time at the first checkpoint! | | 16'18 | . | | | 4th | Marek Rutkiewicz does rather bad. He loses quite a lot already. | | + 47' | . | 3rd | Gaia doesn't do too good either. He is only one second faster. One would expect better. | | + 46' | . | | | 2nd | Obviously, the two above didn't do bad but Van Garderen just did very good: Nerz comes through Checkpoint 1: | | + 41' | . | 1st | Wow. That is surprising. Tschopp really seems to be in awesome shape! He is faster than Nerz! Or does he just overpower on the first kilometers? | | + 38' | . | 5th | Van Garderen continues to convince: He increases his advance a lot! | | 35'41 | . | 4th | For his abilities, Rutkiewicz does quite well, too. Provisional 15th. | | + 1'29 | . | | | 3rd | In contrary to that, one would have expected much more from Michele Gaia. At this point, he's even behind Marangoni. | | + 1'38 | . | | | 2nd | Dominik Nerz on the other hand used the climb very well. He's in fourth position on the second checkpoint. | | + 1'01 | . | | | 1st | But Johan Tschopp counters! Although he loses time on Nerz, his overall is very, very safe. | | + 1'09 | . | | | 5th | First of all, here's the stage winner: Van Garderen busts Gretsch's time completely, being almost a minute faster. He also overtook Michael Rasmussen, who started before him. | | 47'30 | . | 4th | Marek Rutkiewicz rode a very decent time trial. Eventually, he loses his fourth spot but still will finish the race on a very nice fifth spot. | | + 1'53 | . | | | 3rd | Among the Top 5, Michele Gaia was the weakest today. He will keep his third spot though, which should satisfy him. | | + 2'01 | . | | | 2nd | Dominik Nerz accelerates one last time but it won't be enough. He couldn't compete with an amazing Johan Tschopp. Je lost quite a bit on the descent but still rode okay. Provisional nineth. | | + 1'37 | . | | | 1st | But here's the triumphator of this race: Johan Tschopp! He dominated in the mountains with three consecutive wins and now he rises above himself and finishes on a sensational sixth place! He truly deserves the overall here. | | + 1'27 |

I have ambivalent feelings about today. On the one hand, I rode decently, 10th in this field is quite okay. But on the other hand, I can't deny that I still had some hopes to overtake Tschopp. I knew it was going to be extremely difficult and that I would need a terrific day (which I hadn't), but I really didn't think he would even make up time on me. I guess I just have to acknowledge his superiority here, and be happy about my second place. Not too hard, really not!
For the rest of the team, the day was rather unspectacular. Valerio lost one place in the GC, but wasn't sad about it. Alan Marangoni did very well and was praised by the DS, so he got his moment of success here in Austria, as well.
Tomorrow, the tour ends with a short sprint stage, so another chance for Guarnieri and Sabatini to shine.
Yours,
|

Tschopp proved to be the deserved winner, unfortunatelly.. but like you said: 10th in this ITT is quite good and you did well taking the 2nd overall here.. unless nothing special happens in final stage Well done! And - as always - very enjoyable timetrial-report!

Although the overall is just out of reach, 2nd is still terrific. Top-10 on the stage is good to, and now I just realized what time of year it is (ingame), and now I can't wait for the Tour review.

@ tsmoha: There was just nothing to do about it. Tschopp was in a league of his own. And thanks, TT reports are always a bit tougher to do, so glad you enjoyed it.
@ Teddy: Thanks. I'm also glad about the results, really! And about Le Tour: I'll report it the way I did with the Giro: First, there will be a rather big preview, then short report of three stages. Afterwards, the Brixia Tour, Dominik's next race comes.

A very good effort by you in the TT, but it just wasn't to be for you today
But on a brighter note, you still finished 2nd on GC and also collected the Mountains and Best Young Rider Jersey's, so Well Done Matey

Nerz did a good ride, it was Tschopp that was great today and all well deserved the win. But Nerz should be equally happy, getting 2nd and doing better than you expected with your goal, and taking the KoM jersey and Young one too. Great race for Nerz. Hope for a safe ride tomorrow
