April 20, 2012 – La Flèche Wallonne
La Flèche Wallonne is the second of three races in the Ardennais week. We're in Belgium now. La Flèche has a longer tradition (since 1936) than the Amstel Gold Race and can be considered a bit more prestigious.
The route is, for a race of such importance, relatively easy. A lot fewer hills (compared to the AGR) and only 200 kms have to be passed until the finish on the legendary Mur de Huy.
1 | Philippe Gilbert | Omega Pharma - Lotto | 2 | Alexandr Kolobnev | Katusha Team | 3 | Alexandre Vinokourov | Astana | 4 | Damiano Cunego | Lampre - ISD | 5 | Fränk Schleck | Leopard - Trek |
Again, Liquigas and Gilbert are the favorites here. They're challenged by the Schleck brothers or Alejandro Valverde.
Our sponsor expects us to win this race but considering how strong Philippe Gilbert looks at the moment, we would be satisfied with another podium finish.
The break of the day consisted of 12 riders. Marco Marcato was in there, as well as the likes of Franco Pellizotti or Robert Kiserlovski. They worked together extremely well and for quite some time, it looked like they would make it. Eventually, they were caught with only 4 kms to go!
Caught by... well, basically the whole pack! About 50 riders were still together. Andy Schleck was the only favorite who attacked but was caught with the original break.
Just as the Amstel Gold Race, this one was ought to end in a sprint as well. Andy Schleck took the sprint from the front. Damiano Cunego was on his wheel, soon overtook him and it looked pretty well. But then, how else could it be, came Philippe Gilbert! Bam! No chance for anyone else. Two from two for him. Peter Sagan did great as well, finishing fifth.
Same picture as last race: Gilbert wins in front of a Liquigas rider. This time, it's Cunego.

Mission Part Two: Achieved. Philippe Gilbert seems to be unstoppable at the moment. Now he has the chance to write his name in the books of history forever, if he wins the triple!
Although our sponsor wanted a win from us, we are very happy with the result. Gilbert is just too good at the moment, so we made the best out of it. Cunego redeemed himself for his weak performance at the AGR, Peter Sagan on five completed a great team result.

Although I love to see Gilbert winning these races, I'll give you some advice: let or Cunego, or Sagan hit Gilbert of the bike, closely before the final in LBL (let's say just before the Saint-Nicolas), and ride away with the other..... I think it's the only way to beat this guy

Great performance by Liquigas with two Top-5 and the podium! Gilbert seems to be a class of his own, but that's no surprise..

Too bad you couldn't beat Gilbert this time either, but with both Cunego and Sagan in the Top 5 it was a great race anyway.

Thanks for all the comments. I'm very happy with the outcome, especially since I'm usually not that good at the Ardennes, and now I get on the podium even on extreme, that's really nice. Gilbert is just a monster, so I would settle for another podium at LBL very well.
Here's a preview for the race, the live ticker comes tomorrow.

April 24, 2012 - Liège – Bastogne - Liège
Preview
The highlight of the Ardennais week has finally arrived! Liège – Bastogne – Liège, the fourth of five cycling monuments, along with La Lombardia the most prestigious hilly classic! Called „La Doyenne“ (The Oldest), it's the oldest cycling race that is still staged.
The course is very difficult, with lots of very steep ascents, distributed over 259 kms. Just as the other two classics, the finish is uphill but the last kilometers are much harder. Will we firstly see a solo win?
1 | Philippe Gilbert | Omega Pharma – Lotto | 2 | Joaquim Rodriguez | Katusha Team | 3 | Simon Gerrans | Sky ProCycling | 4 | Fränk Schleck | Leopard – Trek | 5 | Samuel Sanchez | Euskaltel – Euskadi |

After his recent performances, Philippe Gilbert is surely the top favorite here. Having been the runner-up two times, Liquigas will surely try their best to beat him today. Apart from them, Alejandro Valverde, Cadel Evans or Samuel Sanchez will try to improve their bad performances.
Third race, third sponsor goal: Again, they want us to finish on the podium, which is exactly what we aim for. Coming from the Giro del Trentino, Vincenzo Nibali joined the team to improve it even more, using this one as a preparation for the Giro.

Km 2: | The attacks start from the scratch although it's obvious that no break could survive the whole 259 kms. | . | Km 18: | Quick·Step and Katusha do the pace and let no one break free. | . | Km 52: | Still no group of the day... | . | | | Km 65: | Finally, here they are: Five men got loose, including Ruben Plaza (Movistar) and Tejay Van Garderen (T-Mobile). | . | Km 87: | P – 5'00 – E1 | . | Km 129: | Over the hills at about half of the race, the pack starts to split. Several groups establish. 75 riders are together in the main group. | . | Km 152: | On the descent towards the final hills, the peloton reunites. The advance of the break touches 10 minutes but then slowly starts to decrease. | . | | | Km 175: | Liquigas overtakes responsability and show themselves at the front. Under the pace of Matthew Busche, the main group gets smaller and smaller. | . | Km 183: | We just hear that Cadel Evans is caught in a group two minutes behind the other favorites. Can he fight back? | . | Km 210: | No special events so far. 60 riders are in the main group with almost all the favorites in it. Slowly but surely, they come closer and closer the the break. Evans' group is already 2'40 behind. | . | | | Km 225: | Now that is surprising: With 34 kilometers to go, Philippe Gilbert follows an attack of Michael Albasini. A couple of other try to counter. | . | | | Km 230: | While Gilbert already reached the original break 1'30 in front, Peter Sagan leads the chase for the other favorites who attacked with him. That leads to a rapid breakup of the main group. | . | Km 232: | And he did it. 15 riders are together 50 seconds behind the break including Gilbert... | . | | | Km 236: | Sagan is amazing! With a huge effort, he pulls Gilbert back. | . | | | Km 240: | With 19 kms to go, Gerrans and Vinokourov attack. Kolobnev follows. Sagan immediatly overtakes the pace again. | . | Km 243: | With success! The attack is neutralized. | . | | | Km 247: | 12 riders are on the descent towards the second to last climb. One of them will most probably win! Liquigas, Omega Pharma and GreenEdge have two riders in there. Most prominent rider missing is Alejandro Valverde. | . | | | Km 253: | 6 kms to go: Samuel Sanchez and Alexandre Vinokourov give it one last try! Some riders follow. | . | | | Km 256: | Five riders got away! Gilbert is in front with Cunego, Andy Schleck, Pineau and Sanchez behind him! | . | | | Km 257: | Gilbert seems to be gone, the triple is within his grasp! Pineau leads the chasers towards the last km! | . | | | Km 259: | Gilbert takes the win! Fantastic performance! | . | | | Km 258: | Rodriguez came from far behind and overtook the group around Cunego. The Italian sits in third position right next to Andy Schleck! | . | | | Km 259: | But Cunego can fight back! He takes his second second spot in a row, the third second spot for Liquigas in the Ardennes! | . | Km 259: | After all the hard work, Peter Sagan finishes 11th. |

He made it! He really made it! Philippe Gilbert is now one of the very best cyclists of all times! With this win, he is one of only two riders - along with Davide Rebellin - who ever made the Ardennais triple.
A very nice conclusion of the Ardennais week. With his second second spot, he proved to be the next best puncheur after Philippe Gilbert. And if we realistically admit that the Belgian was way out of league, we made the very best of it, with three runner-up finishes plus a fifth and two Top 15s. We're very happy with that.

You did great in the Ardennes-classics! All 2nd spots behind a fantastic Gilbert is the best possible!

+ 1.. you did very well with both Sagan and Cunego.. Gilbert made history, that's somehow nice, too Even tough I would have preferred at least one (well deserved) win for Liquigas, of course.

Thank you all for the kind comments. I think to beat Gilbert, it would have taken a perfect day for both Sagan and Cunego. But one of them always had a rather bad shape (max 0) so more wasn't possible. But as I said, I'm extremely pleased with the results
Here's the Tour de Romandie, then the recap of April, afterwards we're ready for the Giro!
