Dominik Nerz: The Next Level
rorzcp
are you going to use Damiano Cunego for Grand tour's and Stage races or will you use him for one day classics?

cunego59
In his first blog entry, Dominik will tell you something about the Liquigas season planning in detail, but what I can tell you is that Cunego won't participate in a GT but he will of course use stage races to increase his form towards his highlights, the Ardennes and the Giro di Lombardia.

i had the same question in mind - but you didnt mention him as a stage racer so you probably only see him as a puncheur...
i think in case the route suits him he could be capable of a top 3 at the giro though(for your season goal). at least he was in a few of my savegames so nibali could ride the tour and get a great resultSmile but that is all up to you Wink cant wait for the season to start!!!

edit: ok didnt see your post beforeSmile

Aww.. ok. Cunego could be a top mountain helper just to get his form up.

cunego59
@ johannes-w: Yep, you're right. As much as I'd love to see him on top of a GT podium once again, I figured that it would be much cooler to have him winning an Ardennais classic than being, say, fifth of th Giro. Plus, the route doesn't really suit him. Many tough summit finishes. About Nibali... Well, you'll see how I arranged the leaders for the GTs.

And the season starts either tomorrow or sunday, I'll see...

@ rorzcp: The point is that he already has a first peak for T-A. And he prepares for that as well. So three highlights with some preperation for each, there isn't room for a GT left, even if it's part of the preperation Wink

Dominik is going to win Tour of Austria. Cool

Also, I don't know, it's up to you, but I think during March-May, Dominik could race a one day race in Italy (Apenninno, etc.) just my opinion. Pfft

@ dienblad: Thanks, me too Smile

@ FreitasPCM: Well, if you look at his training schedule, March-May isn't really his peak. So imo, it wouldn't make much sense to let him ride there. He has already enough race days, I think.

@ kitface: Of course I had that in mind when I chose that race Wink And believe me, I will try everything to beat Tim there, 4 weeks of training camps, dope, whatever works... just kidding, but it'll be fun to see how he'll do there.

Anyway, here's the first report for 2012:

The Race

Traditionally, the Australian Championships are the first professional races of the new cycling season. The winner grants his team a perfect start into the new year and himself the honour to wear his national colors.

The course of the road race is 14,5km long criterium, 11 hills on 160 kilometers. It's not too demanding and will probably be decided either out of a break or from a smaller group of favorites.

The time trial leads the riders over 38 rather but not completely flat kilometers. In this early phase of the season, the winner won't be necessarily the best time trialist: The shape will be a deciding factor.

Result in 2011

As for the road race, GreenEdge also has the top favorite for the time trial. Again, Sky and BMC will try to challenge them.

Team Liquigas

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/NC%20-%20AUS/Fahrer.jpg

As last year, Cameron Wurf is our only starter. He's a decent time trialist and he's also a good shape which is why we hope for a good result in the time trial. In the road race, a breakaway is his only chance.

Report

Road Race

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/NC%20-%20AUS/ProfilRR.jpg

The race started calm but after a few kilometers, a five men break around Michael Matthews (Rabobank) and Trent Lowe (United Healthcare) came free. Under the control of Sky and GreenEdge, they got away only very slow. As it became obvious that they would, at least for the moment, stay free, Cameron Wurf attacked and bridged the gap.

After 40km, Michael Matthews crashed on a descent and lost contact to the escapees. But after 15 further kilometers, he reunited with them. At this moment, with about 105 km to go, they lead with 3'50.

Cameron Wurf does most of the work in the front group and they manage to exceed the advance to 5'30 with 80 km to go. But it was all for nothing – due to the strong GreenEdge team, the group gets caught on last ascent.

Surprisingly, no attacks were made on the last climb so it comes down to a mass sprint. GreenEdge holds all the aces with Davis and Goss. Cameron Wurf tries to grab Davis' wheel while Heinrich Haussler is in a great position as well. But Sky's new signing is in the wind too early and can't hold the speed. Davis follows him and makes his move with 1 km to go. He has no problems to take the win, making this a perfect kick-off for GreenEdge in 2012.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/NC%20-%20AUS/ScreenRR.jpg

Although Wurf grabbed the right wheel, he was just too empty after his breakaway try (plus, he's just a lousy sprinter). And another remark: As Allan Davis is already World Champion, we won't see the national champion jersey this year. Quite a pity in my opinion.

Time Trial

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/NC%20-%20AUS/ProfilTT.jpg

The first rider to set a respectable time was Matthew Goss. After a couple of mediocre rides by some of his GreenEdge team mates, Garmin's Travis Meyer was 5 seconds faster. But that is only the usual skirmish for the lower places.

The first serious bid for a good placement is set by Heinrich Haussler (Sky). He crushes all former times by more than 30 seconds. He already finished a surprisingly strong second last year, can he repeat that now?

As Cameron Wurf comes in, he shows his tremendous shape. Being three seconds faster than Haussler, he sets a great time. It won't last as the best time but he'll surely end up very well.

It turnes out that his time didn't last a minute. Garmin's Carmeron Meyer shoots through the parcours 50 seconds faster. But then came the last three riders, the top favorites Evans, Rogers and Porte. Would Meyer's time last?

No. Evans is only parts of a second faster. No chance for the title though: Rogers is 5 further seconds faster. But both times are nothing against Richie Porte. He comes in with an impressive time leaving Rogers 26 seconds behind. GreenEdge starts the season with a double win in their homecountry.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/NC%20-%20AUS/ScreenTT.jpg

Cameron Wurf ends up on six, a really good result for him.

The Winners

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/NC%20-%20AUS/WinnerRR.jpg

No sign of a world champion curse: Allan Davis begins his new season as he ended the old – with a win at a championship.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/NC%20-%20AUS/WinnerTT.jpg

Richie Porte is able to repeat his win from last year and provides GreenEdge with a perfect kick-off for 2012.

You kidding? It was "awesomely" done. Pfft

Well, then I just hope Dominik will do a good training for when he returns in June. Pfft

Man, those reports are amazing. I am tempted to steal your layout for my story but I'm a nice guy so I won't.

BTW I am hoping Dominik dopes it up big time for the Tour of Austria.

Also, rorzcp, I have to admit, that was a poor comment just then.

EDIT: Why isn't Allan Davis wearing his World Champs jersey?

so, cunego i wasnt trying to put you down or anything i just meant compared to the rest.

i still like it though Smile

Really brilliant presentation, as always. Looking forward to seeing how this season pans out.

@ rorzcp: Don't worry, I know what you mean Wink and in fact, you're not completely wrong, the last part is indeed less "spectacular". I didn't put that much effort in it as I wanted to play and I thought you wanted the season to being. So I didn't spent too much time in the "design".

@ johannes-w: Thanks. I might lower the intensity of training (e.g. only 1 week on level 6) if I feel that he's too tired. We'll see.

@ kitface: Thanks Wink I think it wouldn't help any of our stories if you copy the layout as it takes uniqueness from both of them. Plus, I don't think your layout needs improvement anyway^^

@ Neillster: Thanks. Glad that you follow.

Here's some news, Tour Down Under will be up tomorrow.
