The Race

The Giro di Lombardia is the late highlight of the professional cycling season. Being one of the five so-called monuments of cycling, it has an enormous prestige and the winner will get lots of exposure. Firstly held in 1905, it's also one of the oldest existing races altogether. The Italian legend Fausto Coppi is the record winner with five wins – four of which were consecutive –, most recently, Damiano Cunego could win three times. He's also starting this year, so maybe we'll see him move up to four wins?

The route of the Giro di Lombardia has been changing over the past 100 years every now and then. Since 2010, it leads the peloton over 260 kms from Milano to Como. While it starts out rather easy and leaves room for an early break, the course gets extremely demanding later on. Especially the climb up to the Madonna del Ghisallo is really exhausting. On the last kilometers, a small but steep hill brings the last opportunity for a solo attempt.

Last year saw the surprising double win of Katusha, sprinting from a group of six. Peter Sagan, the top favorite for today, was among the best there already.

The Liquigas duo versus Philippe Gilbert – that's the expected fight today after what they have shown recently. But especially Alejandro Valverde seems to be in good shape as well, and you shouldn't forget about last years 1-2, Kolobnev and Rodriguez. All in all, it's a very distinguished startlist, so we should see a great race.

Team Liquigas

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/Fahrer.jpg

Our goal is pretty simple. We want to win this race! It would be the perfect ending for a perfect season for us. And we're confident that we have the means to do it. Our goal is to make the race as hard as possible in the deciding climbs. Marco Marcato and Damiano Cunego should be able to minimize the size of the front group and chase down every attack. Finally, in the sprint from that small group, Peter Sagan should have no problems to sprint to the win. At least that's the plan. But you never know what happens in a race like this.

Live Ticker

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/Profil.jpg

Km 4:
The riders have lots of respect for this race. No attacks so far.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/1.jpg
Km 6:
Eventually, it's Massimo Giunti (BMC) who decides to show himself on home soil.
.
Km 12:
Eight riders including Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin) are in front now...
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/2.jpg
Km 16:
… but that didn't work out so another couple of guys try to go clear.
.
Km 29:
The pace is lethal in these first kilometers. No break breaks free and the pack streches.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/3.jpg
Km 47:
The peloton reached the first parts of the Lago di Como. A large group is half a minute in front but it isn't expected to last.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/4.jpg
Km 63:
Climbing the up to 11% steep ascent towards Intelvi, there's again a 20 men group in front. It's a very hectic race so far.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/5.jpg
Km 66:
Now already, the first rider falls back. Farnese Vini's D. Albini is not quite a classy rider, yet it's a sign for how fast the race is.
.
Km 78:
On the descent, the 20 men keep a solid advance of 1'30.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/6.jpg
Km 94:
As it grows to more than two minutes, Liquigas decides to firstly intervene today. There are some big names like Hesjedal, Mosquera or Kiserlovski up in front, so Davide Cimolai increases the pace.
.
Km 105:
And due to his work, the group is caught soon after.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/7.jpg
Km 147:
After numerous attempts, it seems like we something like a break of the day. Seven riders around Carlos Barredo (Rabobank) and Ezequiel Mosquera (Vacansoleil) are three minutes in front, climbing up to Loc. Portone.
.
Km 160:
The group works well. With 100 kms to go, the advance is over six minutes.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/8.jpg
Km 182:
It's Omega Pharma doing the relay now. Gilbert obviously has the legs today.
.
Km 190:
Nevertheless, with 70 kms to go, the break is still nine minutes in front. Liquigas moves to the front.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/9.jpg
Km 199:
Meanwhile, only four riders are left together in front. Barredo, Cheula (Geox), Pietropolli (Lampre) and Mosquera.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/10.jpg
Km 200:
Capecchi and Marcato took over on the climb to Madonna del Ghisallo. The advance melts like warm butter and the peloton starts to split. Some big names (Anton, Evans, Rodriguez) are caught behind.
.
Km 213:
Only 23 riders are left in the group of Sagan, Gilbert and Valverde on the foot of the last big climb. It doesn't look good for the others. The leading four are five minutes away.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/11.jpg
Km 215:
The fun has begun! Cunego and Sagan move up to the front. Who can follow?
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/12.jpg
Km 217:
No one? Their concurrence is caught completely off-guarded and the duo creates a gap of one minute.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/13.jpg
Km 218:
Gilbert and Valverde are the main chasers. Valverde accelerates...
.
Km 220:
But he can't shake off the Belgian.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/14.jpg
Km 221:
The Liquigas guys overtake the break step by step. Pietropolli falls back immediatly when being passed. Only Barredo and Cheula left in front. Gilbert and Valverde already 1'45 back. What is happening here?
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/15.jpg
Km 227:
On the descent, they reach Barredo and Cheula. Valverde and Gilbert are over two minutes behind...
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/16.jpg
Km 239:
The former breakaway riders managed to hang on to Cunego and Sagan on the descent but now they have to let go.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/17.jpg
Km 240:
Of course there's still the other part of the race as well: Two minutes behind Gilbert and Valverde, a three men group with Jose Serpa, Cadel Evans and Michele Scarponi chases Daniele Pietropolli. Six men are behind them. They will probably fight for the Top 10 places.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/18.jpg
Km 245:
Damiano Cunego did an amazing job today, but now he has to let go. Sagan enters the last 15 kilometers alone, with an advance of two minutes on Gilbert and Valverde. Barredo and Cheula are still a minute in between.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/19.jpg
Km 245:
Behind, Evans tries to break free from his companions. A Top 5 might be in reach, if he is able to overtake Barredo and Cheula, depending on how exhausted they are.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/20.jpg
Km 250:
Valverde and Gilbert reach the duo in front of them. So they will probably battle for place three. Or is Cunego in reach for them? Two minutes in 10 kms.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/21.jpg
Km 253:
Meanwhile, Sagan simply rides, and rides. Without any notable sign of exhaustion, he extended his lead to three minutes on the two main chasers. Cunego is a minute behind now.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/22.jpg
Km 254:
Cheula and Barredo show a terrific effort, but now they can't keep up wit Valverde and Gilbert anymore. Still, it looks good for the places 5 and 6.
.
Km 256:
Sagan went completely nuts on the last ascent. On only 2.5 kms, he added another 1'30 to his lead. That guy's insane.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/23.jpg
Km 260:
The triumph of a real champion! Peter Sagan wins the Giro di Lombardia like few men have won it before.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/24.jpg
Km 260:
Almost three and a half minutes (!!!) later, Damiano Cunego comes in and rounds up the perfect day for Liquigas. What a performance by the two riders.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/25.jpg
Km 260:
Gilbert wins the sprint for third easily. He crosses the line about six minutes behind Peter Sagan.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/WT%20-%20Lombardia/26.jpg
Km 260:
Cheula eventually secures the fifth spot in front of Carlos Barredo. But both did a magnificent job today and performed admirably.
.
Km 260:
Scarponi, Evans and Serpa finish next. In the sprint of the first larger group (14 riders), Matteo Carrara saves the last Top 10 spot. Marco Marcato, who also worked his ass off today, ends up at a good 25th place.

I don't think any other rider would deserve some holidays more than Peter Sagan at the moment. Such a dominant performance during the last weeks! Incredible! He made history with his ride today.

Liquigas Resumé

Everything went slightly better than expected! We knew we had to perform really well to win today. And well, we did! We thought of a sprint win from a group, but instead, Peter decided to rather ride away... We won't complain!

A huge compliment for everyone in the team today! From Davide Cimolai over Eros Capecchi and Marco Marcato to Damiano Cunego - everyone did an amazing job and worked perfectly to make this possible. I think we can take this statement as a valid season summary! What an amazing season by our team!

(Don't get this wrong: There'll be a real summary soon Wink Or rather: a series of summaries...)

I was offline for a while, so I thought I'd check out this and a couple other stories. I last checked about half way through La Vuelta (other than one post last week) and so much amazing stuff has happened! How you keep up motivation amazes me, this is truly one of the best stories this forum has seen.. Wink

You know what I might just go play some PCM, you've inspired me. Pfft
