Tour of Slovenie - Stage 3
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S3/01.jpg

The only chance for the sprinters on this very short 100 kilometer stage. A day of relative rest for the GC contenders, who need to be fresh for tomorrow's time trial and the final hilly stage the day after tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S3/02.jpg

Two early escapees:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Schlegel
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Kovalev

There have been two counter attempts so far, but Rothaus picked up the pace every time. Surprisingly the two out front maintained a constant gap despite all the fireworks behind, but a group of five eventually caught them right before the only KoM of the day:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Hodeg
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Ngandamba
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Salas

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S3/03.jpg

Schlegel attacks to take the ten points available at this category two, followed by Blums. Hodeg, Salas and Ngandamba take the remaining points before they were swallowed by the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S3/04.jpg

Then the peloton slowed down, allowing the two riders who attacked for the KoM points to be the definitive breakaway:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Blums
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Schlegel

Their gap only reached a maximum of three and a half minutes due to the short nature of the stage. Blums takes the first intermediate sprint, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Marchewka surprisingly sprinting for the remaining bonus second from the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S3/05.jpg

Marchewka does it again for the second intermediate sprint, this time won by Schlegel. Eddie Stobart, Rothaus and Sauber have started chasing down the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S3/06.jpg

With 15 kilometers to go the breakaway is within reach. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Zoidl, Hugentobler and Wahyudi lead, followed by the Rothaus trio of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Bodnar, Hacecký and Downey. They will need to bring back that final minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S3/07.jpg

A small hill with 5 kilometers to go, where the duo still leads by 30 seconds. Rothaus has taken over the lead for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Coutinho, whereas Sauber surrounds itself around pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S3/08.jpg

Finally Blums and Schlegel are caught, now the teams can focus on their sprint trains. A small group managed to get an advantage going into the final zone:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Boev

Rothaus looks a bit disorganized, while Sauber has their train on the rails. GC leader Meyer also seems to throw himself into the mix, which would be an extremely good move if a gap will be awarded for this leading group. Valio is trying to bridge the gap with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Omarsson, Liepins and Hänninen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S3/09.jpg

The final turn with two kilometer to go:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Coutinho
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Korzh

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Liepins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Geschke have opened the sprint from behind, but it looks increasingly likely the winner will come for here. Sauber has a small lead but Rothaus has managed to organize things.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S3/10.jpg

Under the kite and Wippert starts the final lead-out for Coutinho, with Korzh on his wheel. On the left side Manan leads out Salleh with Boev on his wheel, with Meyer in between. The rest is too late.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S3/11.jpg

With 500 meters to go Salleh is launched by Manan, but Boev has more speed coming from his wheel. Coutinho needs a strong punch to take the win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S3/12.jpg

Boev with a very small lead over Salleh and Coutinho, this could go any way.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S3/13.jpg

Photo finish between pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Boev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh! Neither rider seems to know who won, and the jury is currently reviewing the finish photo. We do know pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Coutinho finished third ahead of Korzh, Meyer, Wippert and Manan.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S3/14.jpg

Geschke as best of the rest ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Breschel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier. No time gap was given and nobody was dropped from the peloton, meaning the GC remains unchanged with the exception of the bonus seconds of today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer still leads by 1'04 over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Craddock and 1'14 over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Christian.

After careful deliberation, the jury has decided to award the stage win to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Igor Boev!
