Tour of Slovenie - Stage 2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/01.jpg

After yesterday's hilly time trial it's time for a regular hilly stage. The pure puncheurs must make up the time they lost yesterday, while the time trialist must limit their losses today.

An early breakaway attempt containing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Mundle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Hänninen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Kangangi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Urcelay was brought back right before the first climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Rocchetti attacks to take the first points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Fumic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Eriksson.

In the end a breakaway of three riders is formed:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Fumic

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/04.jpg

Wahyudi takes the points at the next KoM sprint ahead of Rocchetti and Fumic. The gap is currently 5 minutes, with Eddie Stobart, Swisslion and Compal controlling the pace in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/05.jpg

Rocchetti-Wahyudi-Fumic at the second intermediate sprint, an exact replica of the first intermediate sprint. ENI has joined the chase with the gap still around 5 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/06.jpg

Swisslion leads the peloton with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Kovalev doing most of the work. He brought the gap back to 3'30 with 65 kilometers to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Di Maggio is already situated at the front of the pack, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Zaini lining up behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/07.jpg

The third mountain sprint goes to Wahyudi ahead of Rocchetti. Fumic started his sprint way too soon and completely parked near the end. Over the last ten kilometers the gap has been reduced by another minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/08.jpg

This time Rocchetti beats Wahyudi for the KoM. Fumic had to let go and is now riding somewhere between the two leaders and the peloton. ENI has started to pick up the pace, bringing the gap down to less than 2 minutes with 40 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/09.jpg

Team tactics from ENI! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Mancuso accelerates with Di Maggio on his wheel, while Michely leaves a gap. This caught the other teams off guard, but they have to act quickly in order to not give the Italian an early lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Paajanen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Haavardsholm took charge of the peloton, preparing for an attack by their leaders pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Zaini. As it starts to rain, this duo rode towards the ENI duo, who had already caught up to Fumic. The leading duo only has 48 seconds left of their lead, while the remains of the peloton are at 1'48 behind the leaders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Marchewka (3rd), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Olman (4th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Mottin (5th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Cheyne (9th) have already been dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/11.jpg

Rocchetti also takes the final mountain sprint and wins the right to wear the KoM jersey tomorrow with 26 points compared to Wahyudi's 20. The former decides to carry on after the sprint, leaving the Indonesian behind. In the group behind Di Maggio and Gautier managed to create a gap over Zaini and Mancuso, with Fumic already caught by the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bdb.png Craddock attack from the peloton, realising that they might have missed the decisive move. They quickly dispatch of Mancuso and start hunting for Zaini. Rocchetti has a small gap over Wahyudi, with Di Maggio/Gautier at 31 seconds, Zaini at 1'07, Meyer/Craddock at 1'55 and the peloton at 2'37 with 11 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/13.jpg

GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Martin had to let go of the heavily reduced peloton after the latest attacks. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Christian (2nd) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Zoidl (6th) are still there, and if they manage to hang on longer they can do a good job in the GC. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Favilli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Teklit lead the chase in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/14.jpg

With 5 kilometers to go Rocchetti and Wahyudi still have their gaps, but Zaini and Meyer caught Di Maggio and Gautier, with Craddock not far behind. Meyer wastes no time and attacks his rivals.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/15.jpg

He passed the two breakaway members with ease and now leads by a minute, where Craddock made contact with the group ahead of him. A counterattack containing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Kadri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Hugentobler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Siskevicius is rapidly closing in as well, GPS data puts them at 35 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/16.jpg

A viciously steep climb at the end of the stage, but it gives the opportunity to have many riders in the same shot. Meyer under the sign of the last kilometer and looks sure of the stage win. The two breakaway survivors merged with the four chasers, but they're not getting any closer, and even about to get caught by the next chasing group of Hugentobler, Kadri and Siskevicius, with possibilities of the group behind even catching up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Travis Meyer wins the stage, and likely takes the GC lead as well since he'd already gained time on the other contenders in the time trial. It now depends on how much time he can gain today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/18.jpg

45 seconds later, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier wins the sprint for second ahead of a charging pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Hugentobler. Siskevicius, Di Maggio and Kadri take fourth, fifth and sixth place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/19.jpg

Craddock, Zaini, Rocchetti and Wahyudi complete the top ten. There was a small gap between this group and the one in front, so these guys lose an extra 34 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/Slovenie/S2/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Serry leads the next group over the line, which includes Christian amongst others. They lose just over two minutes to Meyer. Martin and Zoidl cross the line another group later (+3'39). This means pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer is now also the leader of the general classification, ahead of Craddock (1'04), Christian (1'14), Gautier (1'18) and Di Maggio (1'29). Martin drops to eight and has to claw back 2 minutes and 38 seconds on the stage four time trial.
