The opening stage of the 2018 Tour of Slovenie is underway when
Warlop rode off the ramp. The riders are served with a time trial of 28.9 kilometers. Main attraction is a hill halfway through the stage, which might bring trouble for the pure flat time trial specialists.
The first notable time is set by
Uwizeyimana at 41 minutes and 50 seconds, which will be the mark for other stage contenders.
It doesn't take long before that time is beaten by
Zoidl, who goes faster at every split and beats the current best time by 14 seconds.
Sepulveda with the third best time, 15 seconds behind the leader.
An indication to what the pure puncheur specialists can do on this route is given by
Serry. He is way off the leaders, nearly two minutes. The same thing happens to nearly all other puncheur specialists.
Pökäla is two seconds off Zoidl at the first split, but drops back after the hill to go provisional fourth.
Virtual fifth place for
Roswell, with the fastest time over the hill so far.
Roe is a decent time trialist and not too bad on the hill. He's three seconds off Zoidl at every split, thus taking second place so far.
New best time on the first split by
Hussein! However he appears to have spent most of his energy in the first part, as he drops from one second ahead to twenty seconds behind Zoidl at the end.
Hacecký smashes the best time on the first split by eleven seconds! His lead then evaporates at the top of the hill, and in the end has to settle for provisional third at nine seconds from Zoidl.
Puusepp with the fastest time at the second split out of nowhere! The puncheur rides the fastest climb so far, but he can't combine it with a good flat sector and places himself just inside the virtual top ten.
Kreuziger, mentioned pre-race as one of the outsiders for today, losing 49 seconds to Zoidl and doesn't even make the current top ten.
Cheyne the new fastest at sector one, losing a bit of time to tie with Zoidl at the second split, and losing five seconds in the final phase for third place.
Mottin even seven seconds faster than Cheyne at the first split. Unlike the Canadian he can hold on to his advantage and dethrones Zoidl by twelve seconds! 41'24 is the new time to beat.
Travis Meyer with the third best time after the hill, but eventually lost nearly a minute to Mottin. He is the best amongst the pure puncheurs today though, gaining 24 seconds on
Di Maggio and
Ben Nasser, 25 seconds on
Gautier, 49 on
Siskevicius and 1'19 on
Zaini.
Mottin's time in the hot seat didn't last long, because
Olman smashes his time and takes the lead in 41'09.
Right behind him,
Downey goes provisional seventh at 38 seconds.
Laizer struggling on the hill, and will not ride a top time today.
Gonzalez Cortes +47, not good enough for a top twenty on the stage as raindrops start to appear.
One second faster at the first split for
Christian! He continues by taking the lead on split two as well, and finishes with a time of 40 minutes and 51 seconds to take the lead by eighteen seconds. He's the first rider to go under 41 minutes.
Decent time trial for
Joeaar, going provisional sixth with a deficit of 49 seconds.
Martin ties with Christian on the first split, but then takes the lead on the second split by two seconds, maintaining it to the end to become the new occupant of the hot seat. Can anyone beat that time?
Bodnar with provisional tenth place, same time as his teammate Hacecký.
Daspuntsag with a very good race, only losing a minute for virtual 13th.
Kovalev not even in the top thirty, partly explainable by his hatred for going uphill.
Sterobo 7 seconds off at the first split, but that turns into 57 at the end to fall outside the top ten.
Craddock comes within ten seconds at both splits but also fades towards the end, 53 seconds for virtual ninth.
A serious contender emerges in
Marchewka, who beats Martin's time on the first split by six seconds. He can't keep his advantage over the hill, dropping to five seconds behind before losing another eleven on the last sector. His performance gives him the final spot on the podium with only a few riders to go.
The rain has stopped.
Warbasse lost 56 seconds to take thirteenth place.
Reigning and defending champion
Reus is the last rider with a chance of winning the stage, but ends up being a huge disappointment by only posting the nineteenth time, over a minute behind his teammate. Mixed result for local team Swisslion, who will win the stage but have their main GC ace losing time.
The few riders after him didn't play a role in today's stage, meaning
Tony Martin can celebrate his stage victory and the accompanying GC and points lead.
Christian and
Marchewka complete the podium at two and sixteen seconds respectively. The latter is the fastest young rider of the day, while Andorra Project takes the lead in the teams classification by one second over Swisslion.
