Bad Goisern – Predigtstuhl 190.8 km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/ProHallstatt/0.jpg

Welcome to the Pro Hallstatt Classic, we have got a nice blue sky and little wind this morning in the beautiful Hallstatter see area, surrounded by the Alps.

The setting as also mentioned in the preview is this:
From Bad Goisern we start with a circuit route, moving south following Hallstatter See, then around the 1975 meter mountain Hoher Sarstein, through Pötschenhöhe mountain pass, the last 3.7 km at 5.8%, but going up quite a bit longer. This lap first 5 times over the mountain pass, before we have the summit finish climb up to Predigtstuhl, 6.6 km at 7.6%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png De Plus opens the stage with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Logar, also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Jones and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Van Niekerk on the move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/ProHallstatt/2.jpg

After more acceleration in front of the peloton, the pace is increased resulting in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Jones and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Van Niekerk being reeled in.

As the pace settles down again, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Padun seize the moment to slip away from the peloton. After a while he joins the first group just as they are about to start the first round of climbing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/ProHallstatt/3.jpg

This turns out the be the breakaway of the day. It max out at a little more than 7 minutes in the valley between the 2nd and 3rd climb.

In the peloton work have been shared by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Danacik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Prado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Karnulin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Konrad, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Iturria, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_eav.png Tarvis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Fumeaux, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Kangert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kratochvila.

Might say many showing will to work, but at this point not very hard, often rider sitting in the pace line but actually not doing any work at all.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/ProHallstatt/4.jpg

The pace now going up in the peloton and from now on it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Padun working all the time in the breakaway as soon as it is uphill. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Padun is clearly the better climber in the group and likely to have the best shot on a surprise win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Logar on the other hand, though still in the group seem to be struggling at the hard part of the climbs.

On the third climb pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Prado doing all the work in the peloton.

In the valley between the 3rd and 4th climb, the distance is down to 3’33”, 70 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/ProHallstatt/5.jpg

The 4th climb, first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Prado working at the first ½ of the climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Badilatti at the hard last part. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kratochvila setting a hard pace on the downhill.

Distance cut to 1’33” in the valley between the 4th and fifth climb, 35 km to go.

We start the 5th climb through Pötschenhöhe mountain pass, again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Prado at the beginning and again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Badilatti takes over.

As the breakaway hit the hard section pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Padun attack, at first dropping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Logar and with another hard acceleration also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png De Plus.

18 km to the finish, distance 1’21”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/ProHallstatt/6.jpg

The peloton is fast on the downhill, leaving only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Padun in front.

This is the positioning in front of the peloton when the slope hit 4%, 6.3 km to the finish.

In the pace line it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Novak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Cink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Prado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kratochvila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Jaramillo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Polanc,

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Spilak first of the favorites in 7th position, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Danacik for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan 9th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Terasaki for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Flügel , pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Konrad for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Ginanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Ramos Ticona for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Trofimov all close inside top 15.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Beltran right behind Ginanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Karnulin by his side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Dzhus for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin to the left. German National Champion pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Klemme to his right, behind Klemme pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png De Bod for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Madrazo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kwiatkowski.

The last line of the photo is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Pernsteiner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Hosek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Bratashcuk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Barguil

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/ProHallstatt/7.jpg

With 5.7 km to the finish it is over for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Padun.

Let’s take a look at some of the stronger riders, caught by the camera sitting too low in case we get a split, ordered by worst position first.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Shikai, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Henao Montoya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Vosekalns, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Scarponi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Nibali, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Penasa, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Preidler, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Guldhammer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Choi.

Could look like the pure climbers do not sit very well positioned when entering the climb.

Up front we still see no attacks, still the Isostar Slovenija’s domestics leading the race. But it could look like the very huge peloton is stretched now and could break.

This is the positioning with 4.8 km left:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Novak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kratochvila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Prado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Cink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Polanc, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Spilak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Flügel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Pernsteiner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Padun, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Barguil, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Karnulin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Klemme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Formolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Ginanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Vysna, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Bibby, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Jaramillo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kwiatkowski.

The only top rider right behind those is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin so if a split would happen now, to could be in this region.
the photo is from 5.1 km so may be small differences in the ordre

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/ProHallstatt/8.jpg

3 km left, we still have a huge peloton of 135 riders, but now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Spilak have moved to the front, definitely not the time to lose contact with the rider in front, unless you can overtake him.

Unofficially could look like we are about to get a group of about 40 rider, opening a small gap. This is the order:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Spilak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Novak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Barguil, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kratochvila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Prado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kwiatkowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Pernsteiner, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Flügel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Formolo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Klemme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Hosek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Guldhammer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Vysna, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Polanc, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Bibby, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Karnulin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Saggiorato, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Ginanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kmm.png Paulus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Ricco, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Olivier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Konrad, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Dekker, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Dyball, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Reichenbach, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Kangert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Kolar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gnr.png Roglič, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Iturria, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Tratnik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_aeg.png Ciccone, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Danacik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Cink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tmo.png Preidler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Morton

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/ProHallstatt/9.jpg

2.5 km to the top.
Without actually acceleration, just pushing hard pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Spilak with teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kratochvila at wheel opens a gap.

In the group behind it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Barguil, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kwiatkowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Novak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Prado and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Trofimov as the best 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/ProHallstatt/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Barguil close the gap, for about 500 meters everything is calmed down again, but then with 1.5 km left, acceleration from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Spilak.

The best placed 20 riders behind him at this point:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Barguil, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kratochvila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Kwiatkowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ubs.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Guldhammer
