EPIC - Season 2 Part 1

Hehe, perfect report for what seems to have been a very lame stage. Well done Luigi Wink

Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

It's time for the final stage of the 2014 Volta a Catalunya. Main difficulty is the Montjuic, which will be ascended 8 times. Main question is whether Valverde can keep his lead.

6 riders form the break: Serry (OPQ), Silin (AST), Verdugo (CJR), Geschke (TFR), Florencio (EUS) and Danielson (GRS). None pose any danger to the GC
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0291.jpg

We'll make a fast forward. Before the first summit of the Montjuic, where Silin is first, Geschke and Florencio won the two intermediate sprints, whereas Danielson and Serry were fastest at the climbs.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0292.jpg

A surprise move with 35km to go: Hivert (SOJ) attacks and manages to build up a good lead.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0293.jpg

Up front, the break heads into the final 20km with a lead of 1m20 to Hivert, who has been joined by Birt, and another minute to the pack.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0294.jpg

Serry is leading the break over the final categorized summit of the race, and it's now definitive Silin will be KoM in this race. A bit behind Ten Dam has attacked, reached Hivert and Birt, and by now overtaken them as well.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0295.jpg

It's also in this descent where Nibali attacks from the pack! He manages to establish and maintain a gap.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0296.jpg

We have to wait until the climb before hell bursts loose though. De Gendt is the first to go, but Rodriguez quickly follows him!
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0297.jpg

At the summit Geschke is the first to cross. The break is still intact though, apart from Silin, who has been dropped.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0298.jpg

Rodriguez has managed to get a gap, but the other favourites quickly try to reach him. None of the main riders seem to miss out.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0299.jpg

Rodriguez heads over the summit with a more than decent gap though. It's 30 seconds, which puts him into the virtual lead!
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0300.jpg

At the very front Geschke has tried to place an attack, but failed to. Serry closes the gap, and the other three soon follow him.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0301.jpg

Moments later Verdugo accelerates! He establishes a gap at a high pace. However, the finish line is still far away.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0302.jpg

And he maintains a gap. He takes the lead as he heads into the final kilometer.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0303.jpg

Rodriguez has had a good descent. With 3km to go his lead to Valverde is about 40 seconds. It must be said though that the group-Valverde is now increasing its pace though.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0304.jpg

Up front Verdugo delivers Caja Rural a very nice stage win!
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0305.jpg

Geschke, Serry, Danielson, Florencio, Silin and Ten Dam occupy 2nd to 7th place.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0306.jpg

Just over 1km to go and Rodriguez has managed to reach Nibali's wheel.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0307.jpg

Behind him some serious sprinting is going on, and the gap between Rodriguez and Valverde is seriously shrinking.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0308.jpg

Rodriguez comes 8th, beating Nibali easily, but the question is is his time gain is big enough.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0309.jpg

It's not! A very strong sprint by Valverde almost closes the gap, and so Valverde takes the overall win!
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM0310.jpg

Almost all favourites were present in this group. Only Contador missed out, and he drops out of the GC top-10. Intxausti happily takes this spot.

Credit to Selwink of course, thanks for another series of good reports, just 2 classics to go now Wink

Congrats to Caja Rural. Happy to see Verdugo get some success.

Also relieved to not only see Florencio show himself in his hoem race but especially that Beñat managed to climb that spot on the GC that is so crucial.

Thanks for some good reports.

Edit:
Also really hoping to get Dwars door Vlaanderen this weekend as It'll directly affect the next round of wildcard applications...

Fantastic start to König's BMC career. Unbelievable ride to easily complete our 4th goal of this part.

Top 5 goal is already out of the window but hopefully Leo can make a good start to his BMC career.

Hooray! Grin
Great victory by Valverde.
I loved the finish on the Montjuic after I've been there just a few weeks ago...

Hey guys,

I've got some bad news. Certainly I need somebody to race Volta Limburg Classic. Just today I tried to do the report, but experienced some problems, which I just don't have the time to look more into (f.e. riders are missing from teams though I have the EPIC_2.1 DB as Kittel from Belkin, some not-working jerseys..)

I'm sorry I waited this long until I even tried it as this causes some delay now. Sad

However, I'm still gonna write the preview. Please raise your hand when you could take over the report and I'll PM you the startlist.

Nice to see Kreuziger hold on to the 8th spot. This is the first time in the entire season part that I get a lower top 10 result.

Is it okay if I do a text report with a s/s of the winner? Struggling for time with exams to be uploading screenshots and everything. I'll also be able to upload a photo album at another time.
