Lisbon - Lisbon 205.7 km

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/0.jpg

Welcome to Lisbon Classic, the route will take us northwest up to the coast, before heading inland over some hilly climbs in the area between Tagus River and The Atlantic coastline, before heading back to Lisbon.

We have got a howling winds at the start this morning, the meteorologist expect winds from 50 up to almost 70 km/hour, no doubt that it will affect how this race will be run, not being alert today may be very costly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/1.jpg

The early breakaway is huge today, 11 riders have got 44” even before we get out of Lisbon, they keep it up for more than 20 km, but it gets neutralized and we get another attack by 5 riders, then 6 riders but again it is brought back, now more than 52 km gone by without a successful breakaway, that must have been draining the riders under these difficult weather conditions.

Amongst those most visible in the peloton have been pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Rovny pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Barbero pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Brockhoff pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stenersen

The riders participating in breakaways was:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/2.jpg

Just as we are about the reach the Atlantic coast we get what is to become the breakaway of the day, it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Schreurs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Vogt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Takenouchi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_red.png Van Niekerk

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/3.jpg

They will build up a lead of 6’10”, before we see any reaction from the peloton, at this point we still has about 100 km racing left.

Over this early part of the pursuit most of the work is done by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Rovny pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Barbero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Brockhoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Bagdonas pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Ackermann

The pace is high enough to reduce the distance slowly, but even though we have crosswinds at 50-65 km/h not enough to split the peloton.

Next major development comes with 42 km to the line, it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Smukulis attacking from the peloton, with breakaway 2’52” ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/4.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Smukulis joins the breakaway with 26 km left, but the peloton is coming closer and we have a last hard hill climb, they won’t get over that before they are caught.

There is no rest for the riders today, just after the morning break is caught, close to the top of the hill another dangerous attack. It is strong puncher/rouleur pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Gerts.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/5.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Gerts got 30” under the 20km banner.

We got one minor hill left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Ngamoki-Cameron, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Redecker and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Budenieks pulling the peloton forward.

14 km left now just 13” for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Gerts.
With crosswind at 69 km/hour the inevitable happens and we get the huge split, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Van Poppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Tzortzakis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Serebriakov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Castañeda, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Rowe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Aberasturi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Havik, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_phc.png Krieger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Suryadi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Bertilsson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Santos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_min.png Avila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Cisse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Thwaites, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Perera, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Bar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nbw.png Farrar did not make the cut.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/6.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Gerts get caught right after the 10 km banner, and the peloton slows down to around 36 km/h. This might have been an opportunity for those left behind, but it does not happen.

With 5 km left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Feng attacks and now it is definitely over for the mentioned riders left behind, the peloton is just 63 riders at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/7.jpg

With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Smirnovs leading the peloton, we see another attempt, this time from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Bellis sneaking off at the left side.

To mention the better sprinters well placed between the first 20 riders, we got pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Guerao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen and
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu in this picture.

4 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/8.jpg

3 km left
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Guardini have lost contact

Up front pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Feng 5-6 meters in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Bellis, they got 15”

The peloton very unorganized compared to the usual mass sprint, the crosswind and high pace pursuit have made it impossible to form the standard lead-out trains, it looks something like this:

2 km left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_wcc.png Feng and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Bellis are back in the bunch. Even though we are this close no one has opened the sprint, with a pace of just 39 km/h everyone is saving energy.

Then with 1.7 km left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen opens the sprint.

Soon pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard at his wheel and then moves up by his side – they pace down towards the red kite side by side – not a single spectator takes a breath.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard first under the red kite, less than a cycle length in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu first in the next group some 8-10 meters back
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Howard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Rowe in the next line

Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Silvestre, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs

Right behind those pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Ponzi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Avermaet

A small gap down to in this ordre: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_yor.png Bellis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Lander, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rpn.png Roelandts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Ignatiev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_npn.png Holloway

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/12.jpg

400 meters left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard still in the lead but not by much.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu also still 3rd, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare now much closer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb have moved fast now side by side with Demare

Behind those pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Silvestre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Rowe a bit further back at the right side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/13.jpg

200 meters left.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard keeps laying distance to Van Stayen it look good for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen seems to fade, with the riders behind coming closer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare now leads this group in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb, but they are very close together hardly decided between them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff at Degenkolb’s wheel with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Silvestre at his.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand on a line behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Coquard wins the 2018 Lisbon Classic in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Stayen 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Demare takes the last podium in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_itd.png Degenkolb 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff 5th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Grosu 6th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bgc.png Silvestre 7th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fab.png Mohs 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/PTHC/Lisbon/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Ahlstrand 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Rowe rounds of top 10
