Fabio Melani | Road to Le Tour | End of Season
Cycleman123
I was out of energy anyway, it didn't slow me down at all.

Wow, why Fabio, why??? You still had half the sprint to go. Man, that photo is going to come back and haunt you later in your career. Still, 2nd isn't so bad, but try telling the DS that Rolling Eyes

Cycleman123
Now I just need to ride well. There's not much else I could've done. Good thing we changed the DS, otherwise bye bye Fabio Wink

Like every stage, this one suits me well. Today is all about discovering the form of my rivals.

The Race

First order of business, the breakaway. 3 riders this time.

Hernandez (TST)
Charteau (EUC)
Keizer (VCD)

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0077_zpsb8a9f023.jpg
I missed the first attacks, which were 60km out. I wasn't a big problem though.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0078_zpsf0039de0.jpg
But the gap continued to grow, and (of course) I attacked on a long downhill.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0079_zpscc51d91e.jpg
I wasn't doing too well, so I dropped back to the peloton. Rodriguez and Ospina set up our relay, but still to no avail!

I tried to attack on the last climb. It didn't last, but I did cause a split. 64 in the peloton now.

Our whole team was going at full pace to bring back the escapees, but even at that speed, we were growing further apart.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0080_zps58b932c0.jpg
Henao took a solo win.

So not a good day at the office. Disappointing.

Pierrick Fedrigo (FDJ) launched a solo break. He was then joined by Thomas Voeckler to complete the day's escapees.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0086_zpsd3ccc2bc.jpg
On the last climb, Fedrigo and Westra were in the lead. Followed by two soloists, Dan Martin, and then yours truly. The gap from the front to the peloton was at this point 1'12.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0087_zps8a519665.jpg

With 2km left the sprint started. Sagan got the early jump and there was no catching him. I had all my energy, but was unfortunately in a bad position, leading out the sprint.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0089_zpsd775dca3.jpg

It was Edvald Boasson Hagen, followed by Michal Kwiatkowski. I was 9th.

Not the best day, but also not the worst. A top 10, and no time lost. Fair enough Wink

This stage should be the easiest, but we all have to be on our guard.

The Race

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0092_zps75586a0b.jpg
We had a 4 man breakaway today.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0093_zpse3ba6e98.jpg
With 42km left, the first big splits occurred. E2 had 18, while all of us were in a 26 man E3, and behind that was the peloton with 73.

There were several big names in our group, so we were always going to get back.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0094_zps0a8049f1.jpg
Everything was back together at the 25km mark.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0095_zps5d01d28c.jpg
My solo pace created the favourites' group. 16 riders made the cut.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0096_zps5ac3172f.jpg
The real attacks came from firstly Nibali, followed by Sagan and me.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0097_zps78828c82.jpg
I'd stupidly wasted a lot of energy trying to stay in the Slovak's wheel, instead of riding a couple of metres behind him. It seemed that this act of stupidity had cost me a Top 2.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0098_zps415cb23f.jpg
I caught the last of the breakaway. It seemed like I could get 3rd, but I had now used up my reserves.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0099_zpsb65e60fc.jpg
The rest of the favourites started to gain on me, and it was an attack from Chris Froome which finally got me.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0100_zpsaa1b76bc.jpg
Cannondale took the win today with their superstar puncher, while I was still holding off the charge behind.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0101_zps4e2546d2.jpg
Oh the cruelty! With 50m left I was 3rd, and I ended 13th. Same time though, so not a huge problem.

Sad

I arrived back at the team bus, thinking about my performance. I was easily the first one from the team to finish, so thus was first to attack. I sat down on the a seat, took out my phone and checked my texts - some people forget that I kinda do races without my phone on me.

Anyway, so a really short time later, with me about to check Facebook, when the door bursts open. The team's head doctor rushes in with a stretcher. At first I couldn't tell who it was, but then as the full body came through the door I noticed that it was Virgilijus. He had a neck brace on, and was crying - not something I'd come to expect from the tough Lithuanian. I asked what was going on, as the other riders seeped in, with as much shock as I had.

The verdict? Broken collarbone.

The Race

With the first split there were 78 left in the peloton. Jeffry and the out-of-form Robinson were left behind.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0105_zps6188a7e8.jpg

It just didn't seem to be my day. Over the penultimate climb, Ryder Hesjedal from the break led Froome, Martin and Kelderman, while Valverde was solo just ahead of the peloton.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0107_zps8a9d435b.jpg

With 100km to go, Jarlinson crashed, but never actually fell behind the peloton.

Vuelta Ciclista a Pais Vasco

Stage 6

The last stage is an ITT. I have to try my best to keep my place in the GC.

The Race

Very surprisingly, Juan Pablo was provisionally the best at both the check and the finish!

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0119_zps9c5d3194.jpg
So, it was time for me to go. It felt like I had the weight of the world on my shoulders. I needed to prove myself after Navarra, and I also had to make myself believe that I was a stage racer, not a pure climber. My form in time-trials has been poor, so I needed to turn that around.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0120_zps019da268.jpg
I was riding comfortably, so I was eagerly listening on the team radio to hear my time.
"Wait what!? Impossible!" I thought, as I heard Sean Kelly talking over the team radio. 1st! 14" to Bauke Mollema in 2nd.

But this was just the check. I needed to stay focused.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0121_zpscff3c951.jpg
And I crossed the line, looking up at the board of times. 1st again! Just 5 seconds to Eddy Boss (TST). But I couldn't get too excited - this was just provisional, and Tejay van Garderen was carving it up right behind me.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/Fabio%20Melani%20-%202/PCM0122_zps82068f13.jpg
And he did take it, but by what a time! 1 minute 3 to me in 2nd!

Well there's the end of my Spanish journey. Now time for the Ardennes!

The Hobbit
Wow that's a superb GC and final TT, well it's hilly, so PCM went a bit mad, but even so, that's brilliant, I hope it goes as well in the Ardennes.
