Deutschland Tour - Stage 6
SportingNonsense
Back to the flat stages, and a chance for the sprinters to finally grab a stage. But with some late climbing that ends at 20km to go, it will not be straightforward.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-0.jpg

The break is: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Nordhaug, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/ubs_zpsaf43a720.png Reichenbach, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Beukeboom, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Burke, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Kennaugh, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Kelderman, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/fes_zpsd43e76fa.png Dees and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Venchi.png Aregger.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-1.jpg

They are still clear by the last of the climbing, and Reichenbach trys to take the 6 points that would move him to within 2 points of KoM leader Rodriguez. But he only gets 4, after being beaten by Dees.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-2.jpg

A short, sharp descent follows. It's quickly over and the front of the peloton had made it safel-i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png PHINNEY CRASHES.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-3.jpg

The 2nd man down is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bo.png Keinath as riders tumble across the road. Some are lucky and manage to find a way through with some good bike handling skills.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-4.jpg

Sprinters down include i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Hoffman and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Mohs.

But Phinney and Keinath were not the only GC riders to taste the floor: There was also i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/puma.png Van den Broeck, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/lot_zps2971ec30.png Lloret, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Scarponi and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/mil_zpsb1abc362.png Uran.

The peloton stretched to avoid the crash, and it looks like Phinney may already be back in there. Keinath is not far away either, along with the other crash victims. Chance of a lucky escape?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-5.jpg

Two of the three peloton-leading teams have dropped back. But hopes of the pace falling off completely are going to be dashed, as i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Vesuvio are still going.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-6.jpg

Ben Swift dodged the crash, but was badly positioned a long way back, and sits not too far ahead of Phinney at the back of the peloton. But he is still in there and that's enough for his team to keep pacing.

There's now been a split at the back of the peloton. Perhaps caused by the big dropback of Simply Red Bull and Pokerstars riders? Even i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Degenkolb has gone back to help Mohs.

Initially reduced to 68, 4 more just held on - including i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Swift.

The next group features 20 - 18 of which did not even crash. The two that did and are in here are i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/wikipedia.png Phinney and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/srl_zps5f456879.png Van Heerden. And it is their teams who are now going to try and close that gap.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-7.jpg

The rest of the crash victims are in another group further behind.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-8.jpg

Well not quite all. Mohs, and therefore now all his teammates, is even further behind. He crashed while already being at the back of the peloton.

The breakaway were still clear at this point, but Vesuvio close them down. It isnt until 5km to go that their man Swift finally joins the rest of his team at the front, and it is all red here at this stage.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-9.jpg

The Phinney group has joined together with the group behind it, but they are losing ground to the peloton now. A time loss is all but certain, which is terrible luck for the GC riders involved.

At the front with many of the top sprinters missing, there are some unexpected names following Vesuvio. Bonnet, Ladagnous, Howard, Colbrelli, Reynes, Blythe, Reckweg, Van der Velde and Schadlich. Vanoverschelde is also here, but a little poorly placed.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-10.jpg

i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/vesuvio.png Caethoven opens the sprint with 2km to go. It should be Swift's to lose here, but how much energy has he got after all the efforts to get up to the front of the race?

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-11.jpg

And Swift just lets him go. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/akm_zps175d5d7c.png Vanoverschelde has improved his position and is surging forwards. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/std_zpsb6c2f350.png Reynes and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Blythe have also began sprinting.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-12.jpg

Clearly Swift does not have the legs, so has gone for the clever tactic of letting Caethoven open a gap. That doesnt really work then when Caethoven stops sprinting - with Reynes and Blythe already closing him down.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-13.jpg

Caethoven gets going again but it is too late, and Blythe storms through. Not the Brit he was expecting!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-14.jpg

And with that crash corner visible in the background, it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/wig_zps5dbe18f9.png Adam Blythe who has benefited most to take a surprise victory!

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/az/deu6-15.jpg

And to complete an unusual podium, it is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/bac_zps18a68956.png Schadlich in 2nd and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PT/pen_zpsd6e38272.png Ladagnous 3rd.

Caethoven ended up 6th, also passed by Schumacher and Bakelandts, while Swift was only 23rd.

It could be worse though. The group of crashed riders has lost 4'30 today. That puts Uran and Phinney out of victory contention and down to 8th and 9th. Keinath and Van den Broeck are down to 12th and 13th, but could still regain the former positions of 10th and 11th in the time trial.

Milka also lose what had been a 4 minute lead in the teams classification.
