Welcome to stage 3, a hilly stage. This one has all the hallmarks of a classic with plenty of riders looking to make up time and unresolved injury concerns meaning we have no idea what is going to happen.


Bookmakers have Spilak, Sinkewitz and faller Rodriguez Oliver as favourites.

My outsider to watch is Popovych due to his need to make up ground following the team time trial.

Off we go



At the first sprint we have a group of 7 2 minutes clear, and, in order, they are Urgunbayar, Wu, Lalouette, Eibegger, Stundzia, Ratiy and Steensen.


Urgunbayar fell off on the uncategorised rise after the sprint and was joined by Martin, Hopman, Zampieri and, off screen, Hulsmans


Eibegger takes the first KoM, followed by Wu and Stundzia, the gap is about 7'30"


Stundzia takes the second KoM ahead of Wu and Ratiy, Gazzetta have started to slowly reel in the gap, now down to 7 min


at the next sprint Ratiy leads with Lalouette in his wheel, followed by Eibegger


As the peleton go over the gap is 5 min with 87km left. Also you can see the second break shattered on the road


at the base of the next climb Vicioso goes on an early attack.


Lalouette wins the next climb followed by Wu and Stundzia


Martin and Zampieri are next 30" back


Vicioso is 1'26" behind when he crests solo


then Hulsman at 2'15"


and the peleton at 2'43" still 68km to go


Vicioso catches the leaders on the final climb but the peleton is now only 2'27" back


The peleton splits and Arroyo is a casualty, is he suffering from the effects of his crash?

as you can see Parra Pinto, Mayo, Vinokurov, Haecky and Perez Sanchez are attacking, although they don't get clear

Spilak goes off the front in an attempt to catch Rogers

Keniath manages to catch the front group


and Spilak catches Abal

then a massive 53 seconds to 5 riders: Popovych, Sinkewitz, Spilak, Perez Sanchez and Zubeldia.

Over the final rise, with just under 10km to go Dekker now has 18" on Mercado.

Followed by a solo Castano, Rodriguez Oliver and Castano

Everyone between Zabriskie and Castano come together on the decent

although Mercado still has 33" over the next group

Rodriguez Oliver comes from the back of the group as they close on Mercado

Velits leads the peleton in almost 2 minutes behind Dekker


Arroyo loses 10 minutes and is clearly suffering

So Dekker continues a strong tour for Phillips, but he will probably fall at some point.
