This is my favourite of the Ardennes classics and also the one that most favours Contador. There are not as many hills as in Amstel Gold, and the gradient of the Mur de Huy will definately suit Contador.

Maarten Wynants was the sole breakaway rider today, in an obviously planned move as his friends had written his name on the Mur in anticipation of it. He might have hoped for someone to go with him though.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche2.png

70km to go saw the first real action as Dekker attacked. Rovira, Azevedo and Verbrugghe went with him and they soon passed Wynants.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche3.png

With 40km to go, a more high profile move was launched as Cobo, Kirchen, Ten Dam, Sanchez and Rebellin made their move.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche4.png

28km to go and at last Valverde attacks, Ricco and Contador counter.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche5.png

All 12 of the attackers came together and held a 1 minute lead over a peleton still containing Schleck and Di Luca.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche6.png

Many of the 12 put in short bursts on the Cote de Ben-Haim, but Contador kept at a steady tempo, no point wasting energy just yet, and at the end of it all. 12 became 8 as Dekker, Rovira, Verbrugghe and Azevedo were dropped. All eyes are now on the Mur de Huy.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche7.png

Valverde attacked the climb full on as he looked to get away
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche8.png

Contador also made a move up the left hand side. He did not get a gap but the positioning would be vital
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche9.png

Having been ready to counter either Schleck or Di Luca, Uran gave up patience and made his attack in the flat section before the Mur, aiming for another top 10 finish
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche10.png

Back in the front, Valverde is pulling away
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche11.png

Contador and Ricco are battling it out for 2nd place
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche12.png

The finish line comes into view
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche13.png

Victory for Alejandro Valverde!
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche14.png

Riccardo Ricco pulls away to take 2nd while Contador is a brilliant 3rd.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche15.png

Laurens Ten Dam is 4th, continuing his good record in this race (He was 5th last year) but his teammate Di Luca had a poor race, experience should have told him that he could not close down over 2 minutes on the Mur alone. He did come past Uran though and takes 9th
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/fleche16.png

Another good 10th place for Uran.

btw your teams jersey is awesome. It reminds me a little bit of the Black Rock Racing jersey.

Back on topic though. 3rd is good. Hope you can get some more good results.

Not only was Fleche Wallone a good race in terms of result for Contador and Uran, Pliuschin and Konovalovas also used it to move up an experience level.

Piluschin can't win a grand tour, not with a 57 DH, believe me, the only reason why Savodeli is on or close to the podium when you play the Giro in the first year is that he has so much energy when you reach the end of descents. DH counts more than it seems

Can Valverde seal a triple victory in the Ardennes classics?

There was a 10 man break, Theo Eltink of Saunier Duval is the best hilly rider in it
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/liegebliege1.png

With 50km to go, Chris Horner attacked, most of the big names countered him but Contador did not since it was nearly the top of the hill. Other than Horner, only Di Luca got a gap.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/liegebliege2.png

Neither Di Luca or Horner could pull away and after letting them waste energy for 12km, Valverde launched an attack and went straight past them.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/liegebliege3.png

Noone could keep up with Valverde and he went solo. Ricco, Cobo and Schleck form group 2 while Contador is on his own.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/liegebliege4.png

Valverde pulls away from the 3 chasers who pull away from Contador. Contador remains around a minute ahead of the pack, where Di Luca, Horner and Visconti are constantly attacking - they just dont have enough blue.

Di Luca and Horner do eventually manage to catch Contador ... with 6km to go.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/liegebliege5.png

Its a victory for Valverde!
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/liegebliege7.png
Hopefully he is in top form now and won't be as good at the tour.

In the battle for 2nd place, Cobo had a gap with 2km to go but just a few hundred metres later, the gap was gone.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/liegebliege6.png

And it is Riccardo Ricco who takes 2nd. Schleck 3rd, Cobo 4th
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/liegebliege8.png

Di Luca takes 5th as Contador end 7th.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/liegebliege9.png

9th, 3rd and 7th is definately a satisfying Ardennes campaign for Contador and he is now ranked 4th in the ProTour standings. His next aim is to repeat his 2007 victory of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. Pliuschin, Perez and Anton head to Romandie before Perez and Anton continue on to the Giro d'Italia.

I like being back at uni, the internet connection actually uploads photos so i don't have to wait 20 minutes to read whats at the bottom of the page. Grin Which is good, because a post by SN usually means another race, which usually means great racing by DFL, which is what i like to read. Smile

Keep up the good work, and well done on the classics so far B)

Alexander Efimkin is eager to earn a place in the Giro and leads a team here in Germany.

i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/henniger1.png
Pagoto, Ten Dam, Wegmann, Laverde, and Kuschinyski are the rivals for Efimkin today, with 25km to go.

But the group is split in 2 as Efimkin, Wegmann and Ten Dam pull away
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/henniger2.png

And with 6km to go it looks like Ten Dam is dropped too
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/henniger3.png

But Ten Dam makes it back in time for the sprint
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/henniger4.png

Fabian Wegmann is an easy winner, to the delight of the german fans.

Team: Pliuschin, Perez, Anton, Uran, Manan, Stevic, Blythe, Konovalovas

Whoever does the best in the GC here is likely to lead the team at the Giro. Anton is the strongest on paper but isnt in particularly great form and will ride mainly to try and complete his level 4 experience for a stats boost for his main season aim, the Vuelta. Perez is currently well placed to lead the team but Pliuschin could pull off something special here and take that role from him - but if Perez does better, then Pliuschin won't ride the Giro at all. Uran and Konovalovas are potential Giro riders while Manan will be the teams Sprinter in Italy.
By competing in the prologue alone, Stevic will increase to level 4 experience and have a new sprint stat of 76.

In terms of opposition here, well, there isnt much. Voigt, Savoldelli, Fothen, Gil, Kreuziger, Augustyn and Joaquin Rodriguez are probably the best here.

Stage 1

Pliuschin set the best time when he finished the course
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL%20Story/romandie1.png

But Kreziger went 1 second faster, and Voigt also went quicker than him. Todays winner was Bradley Wiggins though.

A typical working-class young man, Mickey lives on the same South-East London council estate as Rose and works as a mechanic at the local garage

he has changed jobs evidently - a hidden talent - does he get paid more?

Mickey is the first non-white human companion of the Doctor ever seen on screen (although others had previously appeared in various spin-off media of undetermined canonicity).

nice to see an interracial bbc
