Stage 6

Priamo may have ended the DFL winning streak here in Portugal but Swift will look to hit back now in Stage 6 as he takes the wheel of Galdos. There are a few CSF/Panaria riders at the front, but none of them are Priamo
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal31.png

Pietropolli takes the corner with 1.5km to go in the lead
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal32.png

Has he caught out the sprinters, can he win? Not with Swift in such great form.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal33.png

He is 'swiftly' past the Italian and through to take his 3rd victory of the race (and 3rd of his career)

While there is a rest day in Portugal, the next ProTour event is getting underway in Germany. A 3-lap circuit around Saarbrucken will open things up, with a TTT and tricky mountain stage being 2 highlights of the race.

Cadel Evans will lead the team in what could be his final race of the year. It could be a similar story for Edvald Boasson Hagen - currently on 5 wins this season, he hopes to surpass the 7 wins he has got in the past two years, more recently for us, and originally for Maxbo Bianchi. Bradley Wiggins is here for the TTT as is Mikhail Ignatiev. Building up form for the Vuelta is the aim for the two riders we have raced least so far this year: Alexandre Pliuschin and Anuar Manan. Pliuschin started our season off in Valenciana and then Paris-Nice, while Manan has only had 4 race days so far this season.

Stage 1

A crash midway through the stage was bad news for Jens Voigt, Carlos Sastre, Gilberto Simoni and David Canada, they will all fail to rejoin the peleton and lose time.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland5.png

It would come to an intermediate sprint, with Hagen taking his place behind Gerolsteiner - Hunter leading out Cardoso
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland1.png

Most of the sprint takes place on a bridge, as Cardoso and Hagen make their moves
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland2.png

Bennati is behind Hagen but doesnt have much space to play with as Hagen moves alongside Cardoso
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland3.png

Hagen starts to pull away..
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland4.png

.. and thats win number 6 of the season!
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland6.png

With Ignatiev 6th and Pliuschin 12th, we take 1st in the teams classifcation and therefore the luxury of starting last in Stage 2's TTT

Stage 2

A 42km TTT
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland8.png

First to start, CSC could pose a threat
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland9.png

As could T-Mobile
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland10.png

Predictor produced a strong performance
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland11.png

But Quick Step were also very good
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland12.png

Unlike last year, we have 5 decent TTists, so Pliuschin wont be doing it all single handedly.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland13.png

Evans, Ignatiev, Millar and Wiggins all rode the Tour TTT, which Pliuschin had watched on TV.

Ignatiev was the strongest of our riders today
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland14.png

And he led the team across the line, as we took victory

Stage 7

The third and final mountain stage of the race
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal35.png

Attacks were expected to come on the last climb, but they came much earlier, on the penultimate climb. Even more surprisingly, it is 3rd overall Adam Hansen and 2nd overall Vidal Chão-Quente (Both from the Millar breakaway) who started it
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal36.png

When more attacks followed, Contador felt reluctantly obliged to come too if he wanted to win the stage
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal37.png

He made a group with Chao-Quente, Hansen, Larsson, Petrov and Pires - while Hruska was ahaed of them, leading the capture of the earlier breakaway
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal38.png

The peleton kept them close but didnt seem like they were going to catch them, so 5km before the start of the final climb, Iglinskiy attacked from the peleton
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal39.png

He joined Contadors group as the Spaniard led it onto the climb, 1 minute behind Hruska and the two surving early attackers Caruso and Bosisio.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal40.png

Jimenez (CSF/Panaria) and Riber-Sellebjerg (Slipstream) attacked from the peleton and Millar followed them. Jimeneze made it up to teammate Bosisio and Hruska
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal41.png

The two groups would come together though
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal42.png

Contador kept on the front leading the pace though, hoping to pull away from everyone else
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal43.png

But Riber-Sellebjerg and Jimenez started to pull away, so Iglinskiy attacked up to them (since Contador could not)
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal44.png

Iglisnkiy powered into the lead
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal45.png

But as the finish neared, he cracked!
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal46.png

The Dane and the Spaniard came past him and then Jimenez snuck past the Danish rider to win

Stage 8

Another flatter stage and it favours the 10 man break as their lead prospers
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal48.png

Stevic and Oliphant were the two suitable DFL riders able to chase and they went as hard as they could
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal49.png

At one point this allowed a split, with Stevic and Oliphant dragging a few other riders with them
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal50.png

Up front, the break had whittled down to Agostinelli and Fornaciari
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal51.png

But 4 of the riders who Oliphant and Stevic had helped clear were closing down fast. The DFL pair werent able to keep up with Riberalves' Kruopis and Ulissi, Fercase's Bruno Barbosa, and Relax's Izagirre.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal52.png

But the breakaway pair held on, Barloworld's Agostinelli took the win while the chasing 4 had caught Fornaciari on the line.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal53.png

Ben Swift led in the peleton for 7th, 94 seconds behind the Barloworld rider, unfortunate, but I suppose the other teams just didnt wnat to help us chase the break down considering that we have won so much!

Stage 3

We head to the hills
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland17.png

And a pleasing sight for all - bouncing back from a crash on Stage 1, Jens Voigt was back at what he does best - being in a breakaway
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland18.png

Although past his best, he was still able to pull away on the 4th and steepest climb of the day and his efforts would be rewarded with the KoM jersey
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland19.png

Pellizotti attacked with 1.8km to the top of the climb. Menchov and Popovych followed and unsure on whether this was solely an attack for KoM points or something more, Evans follows
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland20.png

It turned out to be only for points, so Evans reluctantly dropped back along with the other 3 - thats his big effort for the day done so he will have to hope that no big attacks go.

But theres a short steep hill with 10km to go, and Rogers attacks with Popovych
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland21.png

With Evans being unable to do anything, it is the job of race leader Hagen to follow
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland22.png

It doesnt matter that Rogers and Popovych held a small advantage, as with a flat sprint Hagen can use the same tactic he made to good use in winning the San Sebastien Classic - sprinting past them
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland23.png

He pulled into a big lead over them too
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/deutschland24.png

But not wanting to help them gain more time on the peleton, he slowed near the finish, giving himself plenty of time to celebrate his 7th win of the season

Contador ousted from Volta a Portugal
www.roadcycling.com/artman2/uploads/1/4_alberto_contador_astana_close_up.jpg

Controversy was afoot shortly before Stage 9 of the Volta a Portugal as Alberto Contador was shepherded away in a police car following the announcement that he failed a drugs test on Stage 1 of the race. The fast anti-doping procedure here in Portugal helped for the dope test to be swiftly proven positive and that led to this response just 9 days later.

The DFL team have immediately severed ties with Contador, who has had a disappointing season following his Giro triumph with a very poor Tour de France. They say that Contador was 'distant' from the team during Portugal, almost working on his own, and that he 'probably took the basic form of EPO to try and win something, having been depressed by his Tour form'. They also maintained the well known fact that other than Contador, they are the 'cleanest team in the peleton'. Meanwhile Ivan Stevic may also be looking at an early exit from the team, having refused to start the stage in protest for his '100% innocent' friend.

The UCI commented that this was obviously a 'one-off' for Contador taken in 'a moment of desperation' and that he will receive a 'minimum one year ban. It would be two years, but the Spanish authorities dont like it when we try to ban their best riders.'

Contador ousted from Volta a Portugal
The fast anti-doping procedure here in Portugal helped for the dope test to be swiftly proven positive and that led to this response just 9 days later.

You have no idea how funny that is. Every single worker of the LA/MSS team that wasn't suspended is still waiting for someone to come and say that they can go on with their lives and start working somewhere else (some riders included). We have one of the slowest anti-doping responses I have ever seen.

I know, i know, this is a story, not real life, but still

Stage 9

With Alberto Contador out with a failed drugs test, and Ivan Stevic refusing to start in protest of his best friend and roommate, DFL are down to 5 riders - and of them Alexander Efimkin is struggling badly.

Forunately we didnt need to chase the break down as other teams were willing to do so. Swift was some way down in the lead up to the sprint though
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal56.png

And although going early, he found himself horribly blocked in
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal57.png

He did find a way to create some space for himself, but his topspeed is lost
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal58.png

And Lampre's Ongarato is today's winner
