DFL Extreme | Season 4, 2010
SportingNonsense
Looking ahead

After Mikhail Ignatiev's incredible victory on the Champs Elysses, what is next for the DFL team? Most of the Tour riders have peaked and are soon to end their season, the major exception being Uran, whose main aims are still to come.

San Sebastien Classic

Uran and Hagen will come here as joint leaders to combat this hilly classic. Hagen was 14th last year and is in great form, while Uran is of course our normal leader in the hilly classics. Help will come from Ignatiev, Pliuschin, Chtioui, Perez, Sulzberger and De la Fuente.

Volta a Portugal

A lot of our Tour riders are in great form, and it would be a shame to waste that. Rather than heading to Denmark, we have chosen this year to head to Portugal. Its the first ever Portugese race for DFL and where better to start than the top?

Evans, Iglinskiy, Swift, Millar and Contador will all ride here to make use of the end of their peaks - although its arguable if you can call Contador as exiting a peak. Its a strong team, and results are hoped for.

Deutschland Tour

Alexandre Pliuschin will be back to defend his title although with the Vuelta his aim, he does not expect to win back to back titles. He is joined by Hagen, who will look to figure in the sprints as he maintains a decent level of form for Vattenfalls. Ignatiev, Millar and Wiggins all plan to ride for the early TTT.

Great ride in Paris, and a good 4th for Evans

Uran and Hagen co-lead the team with Pliuschin and Ignatiev the leading helpers, Perez and De la Fuente are the obligatory Spaniards, while Chtioui and Sulzberger round out the team. Contador was 2nd here for us last year, while Hagen took 14th.

i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/ssc15.png

Troncoso, Cunego, Garate, Barredo, Mestre and Roy are the breakaway
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/ssc1.png

Troncoso and Roy have been dropped by the time they appraoch the Jaizkibel
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/ssc2.png

The long steep Jaizkibel could decide the race, and little known Canadian Martin Gilbert attacked along with Kirchen, Valverde, Visconti and Pereiro. They reached the breakaway
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/ssc3.png

Gilbert and Kirchen were the only ones able to stay away
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/ssc4.png

Fresh from helping Andy Schleck win the Tour, Gomez Marchante attacked at the top of the Jaizkibel and linked up with Gilbert and Kirchen
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/ssc5.png

Hagen has emerged as the strongest DFL rider, he just about escapes gaining a red bar but his blue bar is all but gone. But the Jaizkibel allowed him to gain most of his blue bar back.

In the flat between the Jaizkibel and the Alto de Gurutze, Valverde and Pereiro attacked and joined up with the leading trio
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/ssc6.png

Onto the Gurutze, Hagen is off on the attack
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/ssc7.png

By the top he still trails the leading 5 by 30 seconds though.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/ssc8.png

Valverde is pushing hard in the front group though, he certainly doesnt want Hagen to catch up
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/ssc9.png

The Norwegian refuses to give up and with 3km to go, the gap has actually gone down to 20 seconds
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/ssc10.png

He quickly catches up with the group, still in strong sprinting form from after the Tour it seems
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/ssc11.png

He moves up alongside Valverde..
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/ssc12.png

... and starts pulling away. He may have picked up 3 red bars but that doesnt matter! He celebrates a surprise victory in the San Sebastien Classic! Brilliant.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/ssc13.png

Valverde takes 2nd place to consolidate his lead in the ProTour standings.

Cadel Evans, Maxim Iglisnkiy, David Millar, Ben Swift and Alberto Contador are all here from the Tour and help to make us the strongest team in the race. Promising young climber Justo Tenorio is here to just gain enough xp to move up to level 3, with Evan Oliphant and Ivan Stevic both starting what they hope to be their buildup for a starting spot in the Vuelta. An out of form Alexander Efimkin completes the lineup.

Stage 1

Ben Swift has yet to win a victory as a professional, and this race is his big chance. His previous best result is a 2nd place in a stage of last year's Tour of Pologne.

He is well placed coming into the sprint, behind the CSF/Panaria riders Matteo Priamo
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal1.png

Swift is feeling good and so he should, he passes Priamo and nobody can match him. He takes his first ever win!

Stage 2

Now in the leaders jersey and wanting to keep it, Swift is confident today ahead of another flat stage.

It all will come down to a sprint and he takes the train of Balbot-Halcon - Fred Rodriguez leading out Simon Clarke. Ivan Stevic could also be in the frame here, as he follows the Liberty Seguros lead out.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal3.png

The sprint is much closer than Stage 1. Swift makes his move alongside Clarke with Priamo on the far left hand side of the road. Watch out too for the Fuerteventura rider Galdos who is behind Swift
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal4.png

Closer it may have been, but the end result is the same, Ben Swift takes his 2nd consecutive win!

Stage 3

David Millar is in the breakaway on Stage 3, a mostly flat stage ending in a mountain.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal6.png

By the time they reach the mountain, they expect to be nearly caught - but hang on, theyre still 20+ minutes ahead of the peleton!!!
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal7.png

Not only that, but Millar is the best climber in the group. Dan Craven of Namibia is the last one to keep up with him
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal8.png

But soon Millar is solo
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal9.png

He presses on up the climb, and will take victory!!
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal10.png

Back down the slopes, Evans, Contador and Iglinskiy all follow LA-MSS's Pires as he makes an attack
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal11.png

Evans is of course the strongest
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal12.png

But it seems Contador is at last motivated - he is determined to catch Evans
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal13.png

At the finish, Dan Craven hangs on for 2nd ... 4 and a half minutes after Millar crossed the line
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal14.png

16 and a half minutes after Millar had finished came Evans, holding off Contador all the way to the top

The Alto da Torre will likely decide the stage and thats where we join it. Evans and Contador have gone on the attack (Iglinskiy protecting Millar) and Evans has reached the Saunier Duval breakaway rider Uribarrena.

When things settled down, the lead group was Evans, Contador, Jimenez and Marzano
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal18.png

Evans controlled the pace, at a high level, to try and weaken both Kimenez and Contador
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal19.png

Jimenez is resilient though, clinging on to the DFL duo
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal20.png

The Spaniard is finally dropped over the top
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal21.png

Into the descent, Evans and Contador are given a free reign. Push as hard as they like and see who descends the best to the finish line
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal22.png

Its Evans who now starts to pull away from Contador
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal23.png

Evans can celebrate victory comfortably
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal24.png

Contador came in 2nd, while 4 minutes after Evans, David Millar finishes to take 7th, defending his race lead nicely

Stage 5

At this stage, David Millar had previously intended to withdraw and head to Germany for the Deutschland Tour to bolster the TTT efforst. But obviously that just isnt going to happen anymore, so instead Cadel Evans will take his place on the flight from Porto to Frankfurt (and then the subsequent train journey to Saarbrucken).
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal30.png

Although flat, the stage was more enduring than Stages 1 and 2 and Swift was unable to get an ideal position at the start of the sprint
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal26.png

Nevertheless, he made his move and took the lead
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal27.png

Priamo is also going strong though
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/portugal28.png

And Priamo takes it ahead of Swift, a role reversal from Stages 1 and 2.
