Stage 18

The Passo Gavia is the climb today, and Ricco makes the first move. Danielson and Capecchi counter.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia85.png

Contador waited until Di Luca attacked before making his move
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia86.png

Contador, Savoldelli, Di Luca, Ortega, Valverde, Rodas and Soler from a group chasing Ricco, Danielson and Capecchi as well as the early break.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia87.png

But the peleton chased Contador's group down
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia88.png

But while the others gave up, Contador kept going and bridged up to the front group
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia89.png

Contador, Capecchi, Danielson and Ricco dropped the early break riders and pressed on - this is a great chance for Contador to secure the Giro
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia90.png

Capecchi was dropped near the top and Contador pulled away slightly from Ricco and Danielson taking full points
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia91.png

The 3 came back together in the descent, heading towards the finish
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia92.png

Contador would lead the sprint, but 2nd is probably the best he can hope for
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia93.png

As expected, Riccardo Ricco is too strong in the sprint and takes the stage

Since Im now back after a few days away, expect the Giro to finish today, as well as the Tour of Belgium, which I will probably keep to a report in just the 1 post

Stage 19

i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia96.png

Its the last chance for Philip Deignan to get KoM points today, whoever leads after today will win the Maglia Verde. Currently the top 3 are: 1. Contador (79) 2. Rodas (62) 3. Deignan (50). 29 points may seem like a lot - but 45 points are on offer on the first 3 climbs of the day alone, with a further 10 on the one later in the stage.

Deignan went on the attack but there was a problem: Aleksandr Kolobnev of Quick Step was able to attack for twice the amount of time as Deignan, who had the unhelpful Laverde as company. Deignan did his best to close the gap but whenever it got close, it just extended again. Deignan would never manage to catch Kolobnev and settle for 2nd in all of the first 3 climbs.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia97.png

Those 2nd places could be enough for Deignan though. It gave him 33 points - putting him ahead of Contador by 4 points. The problem now though is that Contador may take points in the final climb, while defending his GC lead. Deignan needs Contador to cross the climb in no higher than 4th position.

Kolobnev, Deignan and Laverde were all caught and dropped inbetween the summit of the 3rd climb and base of the 4th. Danielson initiated the moves as both Soler and Di Luca countered - it was bad timing since Contador was drinking at the time
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia98.png

Contador made a countermove as soon as he could though
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia99.png

He made it up to Soler and Danielson, but not Di Luca
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia100.png

Di Luca crossed over the top with a 38 second advantage
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia101.png

Rodas, Ortega and Valverde had all joined Contador's group and in crossing 5th, Contador has allowed Deignan to win the KoM competition!!
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia102.png

Having held back slightly in order to do that, Contador could then try to inject some pace into the chase on the descent
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia103.png

Danilo di Luca is desperate to add to his Zoncolan stage win though. He is taking plenty of risks and with 1.6km to go victory looked his, until he took 1 risk too many and crashed!!
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia104.png

The group of 6 all avoided Di Luca, with Contador right at the back having had a slight difficulty in falling the furious pace. Who will win the stage now?
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia107.png

Valverde of course! An easy win for the ProTour leader as Contador safely finishes in 6th
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia105.png

Danilo di Luca slowly pedalled towards the line, a dejected figure, losing 1'55 on the lead 6 - meaning the crash cost him roughly 2 and a half minutes - possibly more if he is injured.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia106.png

A large group of 72 followed Di Luca in, led by Enrico Gasparotto and containing both Alex Efimkin and Dan Lloyd

Stage 20

Sebastien Langeveld was the early leader, shown here passing Geraint Thomas
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia108.png

Here is Philip Deignan in his first outing in the KoM jersey
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia109.png

Eros Capecchi wears the points jersey but it is Contador who leads that competition. Capecchi is an incredible 16th overall in the GC.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia110.png

Robert Gesink secured 5th overall and the young riders jersey
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia111.png

The man starting in 4th overall, Julian Rodas, was a man on a mission today. He won the stage.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia112.png

Rodas was also able to pass Soler and Di Luca in the GC - although he is now on the same time overall as Di Luca.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/giroditalia113.png

Alberto Contador had an easy ride today. Taking a fairly conservative approach before putting in a fast finish to take 3rd on the stage - his best TT performances of the Giro

Stage 21

So, the final stage of the Giro. Geraint Thomas went with the break which included 17th Overall Nocentini, 20th Overall Leipheimer and Quick Step's Tassinari.

Lampre and Liquigas chased the break down though, Thomas and Leipheimer were the last to be caught

All 4 riders dropped off the peleton, so Nocentini and Leipheimer will drop down the GC

The real action of the stage happened in the last 10km: Crashes

9.6km to go, 6th Overall Tom Danielson crashes. 19th overall Pietropolli does too while 22nd overall Augustyn is amongst the Discovery Channel riders to drop back to help Danielson.

Amongst the carnage are Di Luca, Rodas, Cunego, Sanchez, Casar, Ricco, Orozco, Lloyd, Blythe and Deignan

Just over 1km to go, Danielson and Pietropolli crashed again

With Goss going for the sprints and Nolf hoping for a strong showing, Millar, Ignatiev, Iglinski and Swift are here in their TDF buildup as Oliphant and Sulzberger make up the numbers.

Stage 1

Matt Goss had looked good in the few days at the Giro before his abandonment, but could only manage 4th on Stage 1.

Stage 2

A stage with a couple of cobbled hills at around 60km from the finish. Nolf looked to take advantage.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/tourofbelgium2.png

And he severely strecthed the field
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/tourofbelgium3.png

Instead of risking going on a 60km solo, he waited for 2 Chocolaude Jacques riders, Verbist and 2nd Overall De Ketele.
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/tourofbelgium4.png

De Ketele just sat in the wheels as Nolf and Verbist relayed, until an intermediate sprint with 23km to go. De Ketele went for it, so Nolf had to too. But Verbist dropped off and De Ketele still would not relay with Nolf.

There was little Nolf could do but drag De Ketele to the finish, 2nd is better than being caught

None of the rest of the team finished in the peleton whilst Iglinsky and Sulzberger were amongst those outside of the time limit.

Stage 3

We were optimistic going into the 15km flat TT but things didnt work out well. Nolf couldnt gain 16 seconds on De Ketele - and infact lost time. While Ignatiev and particularly Millar are too out of form to produce a good time trial at the moment. Goss did surprisingly well though. Nolf:

The hilly stage included the Mur de Huy midway through and Col de la Redoute towards the end. Kenny de Ketele proved to be the strongest in the race as he won the stage, outsprinting Stefan Schumacher of Slipstream after both had broken clear. Nolf drops to 3rd overall after losing time to Schumacher.

Stage 5

Our team's last chance for a win and with an intermediate sprint at 9km to go, we developed a plan. Goss won that sprint, ahead of Nolf
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/tourofbelgium9.png

Nolf then buried himself with Goss in his wheel, to keep a gap on the peleton
i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff272/SportingNonsense2/DFL/tourofbelgium10.png

The gap kept and Goss immediately went with 3km to go. There was only ever 1 outcome: A win for Goss! Kenny de Ketele came through for 2nd, a great race for him

Great Giro Sporting. And not a bad race in belgium. Were you expecting Kenny De Ketele to be so strong? What are his stats?

Our team has a mix of the TTers on the Tour line up and still building form, and riders still inform from the Giro.
Cadel Evans, Mikhail Ignatiev, Bradley Wiggins and David Millar will race the Tour, while Matt Goss, Adam Blythe, Philip Deignan and Alex Efimkin did the Giro.

Stage 1

Supposed to be a flat 8km prologue, we turned up at the start to find it was only 2km. The gaps were therefore very tight, and the winner was Thomas Dekker
