Benelux Challenge - Stage 2
roturn
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_2_000.png

Stage 2 - Luxembourg > Hautcharage The first road race of the event and it's a rather challenging flat stage just under 200km, with a undulating route. The first chance to fight for the KoM classification and of course the first chance for sprinters to fight for line honours.

Modolo, Aregger, Kruopis and Kreder as those punchy sprinters, who like the look of the profile. Coutinho and Vanderaerden as the best pure sprinters, Thorsen may struggle on those bumpy roads though. Will Chavanne defend the GC lead?

The first breakaway attempt already makes for the break of the day:

Three mountain sprints on the menu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Thomson takes two of them for the lead in the KoM classification:

Provisional KoM Thomson 13, Penko/Mudgway 7

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Mudgway would take the only intermediate of the day, beating Thomson in a close decision..

The peloton always looks in control of the escaping group and even though it takes them quite a while to finally close the gap, the stage will come down to a bunch sprint eventually:

Delvaux, Cerveceria and Rothaus as the most active teams in the chase. Modolo, Kluge and Coutinho certainly do have ambitiouns today!

We're inside the final 3km of the stage now and the situation at the front of the pack is rather messy:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_2_005.jpg

1.7km to go and Delvaux's armada got their stuff together, leading the pack with a small gap now:

Breen with Kreder/Favilli right behind, Van der Haar has done his work..

Mollema still there and then it's Kluge's train with Coutinho, Bogdanovics right behind him.. King, Liepins, Geschke seem to struggle at this point! Chavanne also in the mix.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_2_006.jpg

800metres to go and Favilli is Delvaux's first option! He fires with less than a kilometre remaining and Kreder is quickly a few metres in arrears..

Coutinho and Kluge right behind him now, as they moved towards the front in the meantime! Bogdanovics struggles to keep their wheel and also Liepins and King can't close up to the very front..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Modolo finally appears though, probably too late to attack the race leader Chavanne, who's still ahead of him here!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_2_007.jpg

But wow, how fast goes Modolo now? He's still behind Liepins/Chavanne/Geschke, who make up a lot of ground on the leading riders!

Bogdanovics and Kluge struggle to hold them off.. Favilli still ahead of Coutinho, who dropped Kluge easily. But the gap is becoming smaller with just a few hundred to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ben Nasser with a very strong sprint, too, as he managed to catch Modolo's wheel!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_2_008.jpg

Favilli can't maintain the lead! Coutinho flies past him with a couple of hundred to go!

Liepins leads Chavanne and Geschke towards the fight for the podium and also Modolo still goes very strong! Ben Nasser can't match his speed, but he's certainly showing his strength already in this flat stage..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_2_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Coutinho takes the stage! He obviously rode the smartest sprint today, going past Delvaux's leading duo easily and holding off the faster sprinters eventually. Well done!

A sick sprint from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Modolo, who finish as 2nd! He definitely had the fastest sprint of all riders, but missed the first crucial moments of the bunch sprint.

In a photo finish decision pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_del.png Favilli takes the final podium spot ahead of a strong Geschke and Liepins. Favilli may just have launched his sprint too early, but it's good enough for a strong result.

Chavanne with another great result as 6th on the stage, just ahead of Ben Nasser and Kreder, Kluge and Bogdanovics..

That's all good news for Chavanne, who defends the race lead by 3 seconds on Modolo, who only could have taken the lead with a stage win. Kireva 3rd ahead of Van Poppel and Pökälä. Coutinho remains a non-factor for the GC, but Favilli moves up to 16th place (16 seconds behind Chavanne) before tomorrow's first hill stage.
