Prologue - Luxembourg Ville The 5.2km parcours through Luxembourg city has one clear favorite: Chavanne. For some other riders it's a first opportunity to gain some valuable seconds for a notable GC result and the parcours does also feature an interesting profile, where a final short climb may favor those prologue specialits, who handle hills better than other TT horses.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Oba sets a first notable best time:

7'33"

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Kreuziger + 5"
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ada.png Stoenchev + 5"

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_1_002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Pökälä as one of those specialists, who actually handle hills pretty well. He proves to be a real threat for today's stage, as he smashes Oba's best time easily:

7'28" to finish the course 5 seconds faster!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_1_003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Laizer ain't known as a good climber, but he looks strong, too:

+ 3" as provisional 2nd at the finish!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Johansson + 9" for a rather disappointing result
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Kovalev + 9" and the same here..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_1_004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Dzervus does even better than Laizer, but only by the smallest possible margent:

+ 3" as well, but ahead of Laizer to finish as 2nd so far:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_1_005.jpg

A few puncheurs like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rot.png Mendes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer did quite well, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Drucker as the best cobbler so far, his solid prologue skills may lead to a notable stage result after all..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gcn.png Burke as provisional 6th..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_1_006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Chavanne with the already well known mission to take the prologue. He's on a good way to add another stage win to his palmares, as he easily beats the best time:

7'20" and so a convincing 8 seconds faster than Pökälä!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_1_007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_api.png Kireva next, a possible dark horse for the stage. He does well indeed:

+ 6" as provisional 2nd at the finish..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_1_008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Kruopis on the road and while he's clearly off Chavanne's best time, he remains in striking distance for the coming days:

+ 12" to finish one second behind teammate Dzervus and Laizer..

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_1_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Aregger as one of the last riders, who can possibly attack Chavanne. Just like Kruopis, he gets himself into a good position for tomorrow's flat stage, but he can't beat his teammate:

+ 10" as provisional 4th at the finish!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_1_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ofr.png Van Poppel now and while he's also chanceless against Chavanne, he still went for a very strong time eventually:

+ 7" as 3rd at the finish!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/C2HC/benelux/MG18_benelux_1_011.jpg

No more rider on the road and so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Chavanne can celebrate a commanding victory in this opening stage through Luxembourg. A kinda expected win, of course, but still an important one. Given the time gaps, he definitely has a good chance to defend his race lead at least tomorrow.

Kireva with a strong 2nd place ahead of Van Poppel, Pökälä and Aregger, who may be the most dangerous rider for Chavanne in tomorrow's flat, but challenging road race. Oba finishes the stage as 9th after leading the stage earlier on. Reijnen had a strong time off the tv cameras, completing the Top-10 ahead of Mendes, Modolo, Burke, Meyer and Drucker. A good result for Modolo (15 seconds behind Chavanne), who can attack the GC lead with a stage win tomorrow. The profile should suit him just like it should suit Aregger and Kruopis.
