Support Riders

Marcus Burghardt
i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/e3de302b.png Germany
Born – June 30, 1983 (24 years old)
Marcus is one of the rising talents in the cobbled classics. He is big and strong and has the strength to pound the pedals over a long day on the pavers.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/c4be30c6.jpg

Program
Marcus’ primary focus is riding support for George Hincapie in the spring classics. After a punishing spring of classic races, Burghardt will take the summer off and then peak his fitness once again in September for the Deutschland Tour. Team Columbia’s strong cast of German riders should make for a dominating presence in the late season Pro Tour event.

Gerald Ciolek
i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/e3de302b.png Germany
Born – September 19, 1986 (21 years old)
Gerald is quickly adding his name to the ranks of world class sprinters. With some more training and experience he is sure to become a dominant force within the peleton.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/978ddb06.jpg

Program
Ciolek is looking to make a huge impact at the Deutschland Tour this year. He will be a our primary hope for stage wins on the flat run-ins. His preperation will require him to make a trip over the pond early in the season. Team Columbia will look for Gerald to take the points crown at the Tour of Georgia in late April.

Bernhard Eisel
i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/f52904dc.png Austria
Born - February 17, 1981 (26 years old)
Bernhard is a fantastic rider. He has very good top speed and acceleration which make him a real threat when the race comes down to the strong men. He also has very good strength, stamina, and handling on cobbled sections. Making races like Gent-Wevelgem perfect for his strengths.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/3de00e4d.jpg

Program
Eisel, basically, will be riding two different seasons. In the spring he will be a key support rider for George Hincapie and may even look to podium at Gent-Wevelgem. But after the grueling spring, Bernhard will keep cool in the summer. In August he will be bringing his fitness back up for the Vuelta a Espana. Eisel will be one of a few Columbia riders looking for stage wins on the flats in Spain.

Linus Gerdemann
i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/e3de302b.png Germany
Born – September 16, 1982 (25 years old)
Linus is an up and coming talent in stage races. Still lacking the recovery of the world’s best, Linus has yet to make a huge impact at a Grand Tour. However, his mixture of climbing ability and time trialing skill allow him to throw his hat in there with the best in the world on any given day.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/5a095e4a.jpg

Program
Linus will not be seen much in the spring. In fact, his fitness won’t begin to increase until late May. He’ll quickly ramp up the intensity level in order to be a support rider for Kim Kirchen in the Tour. But Linus will be kept on a short leash in the Tour, because his primary goal this season is the Deutschland Tour. Still lacking the elite recovery needed to win one of the three big ones, Linus will, instead, focus his talents to his country’s major stage race. With a strong squad supporting him, Linus will settle for no less than first place at this years Deutschland Tour.

Andre Greipel
i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/e3de302b.png Germany
Born – July 16, 1982 (25 years old)
Andre is one of many strong sprinters on the Columbia squad. In fact, he is second to only Mark Cavendish in ability on the sprints. A natural sprinter, Andre is always willing to make a push for the line.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/a70bb8b5.jpg

Program
Andre will be stepping outside of his comfort zone this year. For the sake of the team he has accepted the task of sprinting in the Giro. As the second best sprinter on the squad, Greipel was asked to gather at least one stage victory at this years Giro. Because the Giro isn’t a primary goal for the team, he will be riding without ideal support. Before the Giro, he’ll be looking to make some noise at the Paris-Nice, one of his favorite races. Because he is sacrificing (riding a Grand Tour) for the team, we want to give him a chance to pull down a sprinters victory at the Paris-Nice. Andre will bring good form through the month of September, lending his services wherever they may be needed.

Roger Hammond
i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/bb6ab5aa.png United Kingdom
Born – January 30, 1974 (33 years old)
One of the older riders on a young squad, Roger is looked to for leadership more than anything. Fortunately the leadership we gain from such a rider doesn’t come with a lack of ability. Roger is an amazing cobbled rider and a fantastic lead out man in the sprints. His strength and determination are great examples for the younger riders on the team.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/12b252e8.jpg

Program
Roger’s program is built around being a support rider. He will be an invaluable asset to George when the road is paved. Roger will then ride the rest of the year as a lead out man for the deep stable of sprinters that Columbia is bringing into the fall.

Andreas Klier
i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/e3de302b.png Germany
Born – January 15, 1976 (31 years old)
Klier is a warrior on the cobblestones. He has the determination and stamina to turn a grueling day on terrible pavement into a result. Klier won the Gent-Wevelgem in 2003 and has several strong showings to bolster his resume.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/993fb317.jpg

Program
Andreas will try to make his presence known early in the year. He will ride support in the cobbled classics and look to set up the sprinters in some other spring stage races. He’ll then take the summer off for the most part and then look to ride support once again in the fall.

Michael Rogers
i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/3f12ca13.png Australia
Born – December 20, 1979 (28 years old)
Michael is a fantastic stage race rider. He can get over the mountains and hills, but his greatest asset is ability to race against the clock. He is one of the greatest time trialers in the world. His recovery ability is good enough to keep him in contention even after a week of racing.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/supportriders/985bd240.jpg

Program
Rogers program is identical to Linus Gerdemann’s. Like Linus, Michael will be non-existent in the spring. He will then gear up to ride support for Kim Kirchen in the Tour. Rogers will be our number 2 GC threat if something were to derail Kirchen. Michael will then turn his attention to the Vuelta. He will be our GC threat in that race and will look for a top 10 finish. With the surprising emphasis on Time Trials, Michael will look to open up gaps against the clock and then defend in the mountains.

Australian National Championship

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/aussie%20national/7b089335.jpg

Rogers is looking good in the new team kit. He’ll be our hope to take home the Aussie National Championship.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/aussie%20national/4436fc45.jpg

Hayman attacks the peleton very early in the stage. With 161km to go, Hayman tries to establish a breakaway.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/aussie%20national/0e72db52.jpg

Hayman’s initial break was unsuccessful. But he and Goss of CSC follow Manion in hopes that this one will be the one.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/aussie%20national/176decba.jpg

They make it. The break is Manion, Hayman, Kemps, Sutton, Goss, and O’Brien.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/aussie%20national/8f5b08aa.jpg

Hayman is really feeling aggressive today. He attacks within the break. It does not succeed.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/aussie%20national/3d21ce66.jpg

Three riders, led by Gerrans of Credit Agricole, try to bridge up to the day’s early breakaway.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/aussie%20national/0fdd1d96.jpg

McEwen of Silence Lotto and Columbia’s Davis lend their efforts to bring the race favorites into range of the leading group.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/aussie%20national/4266e3e1.jpg

After a long hot day in the sun, some riders begin to lose their focus. Mix that with a frantic peleton, and you are bound to lose a rider or two.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/aussie%20national/eeb40685.jpg

This time it is Cooke of Barloworld.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/aussie%20national/513bec25.jpg

With under 30km to go Rogers sees an opportunity and takes a chance. Is it too early?

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/aussie%20national/39230dd4.jpg

CSC-Saxo Bank is too strong. McGee leads the peleton in the catch of Rogers.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/aussie%20national/0484457d.jpg

With such a strong team effort, nobody is surprised to see Stuart O’Grady pull away from the rest of the peleton.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/aussie%20national/0984433b.jpg

Rogers didn’t have enough left in the tank to catch O’Grady, or even Evans and Davis for that matter. He comes in a solid, but still disappointing fourth.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/aussie%20national/a952ffde.jpg

The top 10 finishers on the day. O'Grady will spend the season wearing teh Australian colors out on the road. What an honor!

Tour Down Under - Stage 1

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage1/dc98dfcd.jpg

Gardeyn leads the attack for the mountain points. Devine follows the train up the mountain, hoping for some points.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage1/2ac72061.jpg

Devine sheds the rest of the riders on the way up. What a show of force!

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage1/7a06ab8b.jpg

And he gets the maximum points. He will be in the climbers jersey tomorrow! A good result for the young American.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage1/e21c1822.jpg

The breakaway. There are 11 total riders trying to stay away today.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage1/def44213.jpg

There are 5 riders chasing hard. Gerdemann, Geslin, Blaudzun, Franzoi, and Devine.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage1/d28774d7.jpg

Three riders hit the deck. Stamsnijder, Valentin, and Roesems will lose time on the main field.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage1/a36380e5.jpg

The blue train. Cavendish is feeling really good today. This looks like it could be another Columbia rider in a jersey tomorrow (alongside Devine).

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage1/a6e3934b.jpg

That was a train that went nowhere. Cavendish would have been better off picking a wheel from 12km out. Does he have the jets to come around Steegmans or Hushovd?

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage1/2ad15eec.jpg

Nope. Hushovd and Steegmans are too strong and had too much of a lead on Cavendish. Third is a nice result, but not what we are here for.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage1/aaa21098.jpg

Stage Results. Arveson and Bennati followed the front three across the line.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage1/5565db27.jpg

Overall time. Because of time bonuses out on the road Edaleine and Gardeyn sneak ahead of Cavendish.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage1/9cb7add7.jpg

The points standings so far. The point bonuses out on the road aren't enough to disrupt the top 5 finishers on the day

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage1/87ab9456.jpg

The mountain standings to this point. Devine will be wearing the climbers jersey tomorrow.

Tour Down Under - Stage 2

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/4d4a391c.jpg

We did get that second jersey. Cavendish is wearing the white jersey for the best young rider and Devine, of course, is in the climbers jersey.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/b2903a78.jpg

Time for the first intermediate sprint. The points go to Murphy, Clarke, and Isasi.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/36d60c08.jpg

The KOM points go to Murphy, Isasi, and Del Nero. If Devine wants to wear the jersey tomorrow, he’ll have to beat Murphy across the finish line. That shouldn’t be too hard, normally a rider like Murphy who is in the break won’t have the legs to keep up at the end of the day.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/5bbb4612.jpg

The breakaway wasn’t moving fast enough for Garcia Acosta.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/2df19c38.jpg

The back end of the escape group gets brought back into the fold.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/3cba981a.jpg

Green power. Credit Agricole are riding very hard for their man Thor Hushovd. Liquigas sends a few riders through on occasion.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/638806a2.jpg

Hincapie is feeling very good today! He is our hope for the overall standings, maybe he can carry this form through the next few stages.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/51f3b202.jpg

Oh, why not? We’re going to give George the green light ot go. Maybe he can create enough of a gap to put time on the other GC riders, or if nothing else, split the peleton.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/1197d978.jpg

Go, George, go!

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/1226e480.jpg

He’s got a small gap, can he hold it for 10km?

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/c6ecd8fc.jpg

Just in case. Cavendish has found a very good wheel to follow. We’re not bothering with a lead out today. We’re okay with hitching a ride.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/669f8bc8.jpg

The peleton pulled George in without much difficulty. After getting hung up on the wrong side of the road, Hushovd didn’t have the right line on the sprint. Cavendish had the wrong wheel. Arveson of CSC – Saxo Bank gets a win.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/e6b491b1.jpg

Cavendish is not getting the results he was expecting coming into the Tour Down Under.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/a9cca7b9.jpg

Today's stage results. Cavendish just squeaked into the top 5. We are still looking for that stage victory.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/b2247ca8.jpg

Overall time standings. With the bonuses, Cavendish has been knocked from the top 5.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/376201be.jpg

The points standings to this point are encouraging for Cavendish. If he can win a stage and continue to finish in the top 3, he has hope of taking the points title.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage2/a063a309.jpg

The mountain points thus far. Isasi snuck up on us, he got two points yesterday. Because Isasi beat Devine across the finish line, Isasi will have the climbers jersey tomorrow. Today was not a good day for Columbia.

Thanks. I may be putting unreal expectations on Kirchen. He can't time trial well, and his recovery isn't superb, but we'll see.

I also don't think I'll be using any training camps. I think they give a ridiculous advantage and aren't very realistic. So his stats won't be boosted for the Tour.

Tour Down Under - Stage 3

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/a429d811.jpg

Devine goes with the break, trying to pick up some points on the mountain.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/381c75bc.jpg

The days’ breakaway is a real mess. The riders keep attacking one another, refusing to settle down and work together.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/d1753f95.jpg

Finally they get it together. Devine is sitting on, calculating his attack for the KOM points.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/48d892f3.jpg

John sets a very hot pace that only a few can sustain. Will he hold on and get the maximum points?

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/95f314f1.jpg

Second is good enough. Neither Bru nor Fornaciari are threats for the KOM standings. John Devine will put on the climbers jersey once again.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/a86c12f9.jpg

Bru continues his strong day off the front. He takes the first intermediate sprint as well.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/c817be67.jpg

With the peleton breathing down their necks, Bru and Fornaciari hold them off on the sprint. Bru slingshots around his breakaway companion and takes the sprint.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/5c25d10b.jpg

There is a very dangerous group of 4 riders off the front. Hoste, Nuyens, Zberg, and Vogels. We won’t let them get too much distance on us.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/5b10e73c.jpg

Columbia sends the big guns up front to bring in the dangerous group out front.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/b7e0e1b2.jpg

Caught. That wasn’t all that difficult.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/7768a38a.jpg

Gerrans with a flat. He may lose time in the GC standings. He was one of the riders to watch on the pivotal hill in stage 5.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/c3c20e9c.jpg

Arveson out front again on the sprint. He is really looking good this week. Hammond looks to be in a good spot, can he get a result?

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/f5f2aed3.jpg

CSC celebrating another victory for Arveson.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/5e0597d7.jpg

Arveson does it again. Cavendish isn't even the big news of the day for Columbia. Roger Hammond was able to take third. A good day for Columbia, but still no stage win.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/ee43a13e.jpg

With the time bonus of another stage win, Arveson moves into the leaders jersey. He is really on form.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/43a41798.jpg

Cavendish still in striking distance for the overall points standings, but Arveson isn't making it easy. He is putting some distance between himself and the other sprinters.

i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg247/mp2311/COLUMBIA/tour%20down%20under/stage3/725b7ee5.jpg

The mountain standings after today are a better sight for Columbia. Devine is once again on top.
