Stage 9 is the final chance for the sprinters to shine. But will they’ve team mates ready to sacrifice themselves to catch the early attacks? There’s 2 decisive days to come for the overall classification, and
Pellizotti & Venchi
probably prefers to save their domestiques for the final stage instead of using them today. But we shall see, favourites for today are
Kip
Santos
Marinangeli
The stage is 172 kilometers long, and it’s another day with good weather, though, we’re missing the heat we’ve had on the previous stages, only 11 degrees today.
135 kilometers into the stage, and we’ve a huge breakaway with a good gap back to the peloton. 10 riders co-operate well, having 4’45 back to the peloton. The riders are:
Seledkov
Venter
Van Den Eynde
Viennet
Hardy
La Lavandier
Martin
Jeandesbosz
Willems
Passeron
Venchi
takes the early responsibility for the chase, but they’re helped by
Cyclevox
Proximus
Willems
is the rider going first over the only classified climb of the day, taking the 6 mountain points. The 10 riders continue to extend their advantage, with 125 kilometers left, the gap is up to 6 minutes.
Willems
times his turns at the front perfect in the breakaway, as he rolls over first at the first intermediate sprint aswell. They’re 8 minutes ahead of the peloton now, 101 kilometers to go.
The young German,
Martin
leads the breakaway onto the long flat run in to the finish line. 71 kilometers to go, the peloton is controlling the well though, being only 5’30 behind.
The peloton is led onto the flat by Proximus, where
Kip
clearly believes in himself, having sent 6 team mates to the front of the peloton. They’re 5’10 behind now, taking time at the breakaway for every turn at the pedal!
Jeandesbosz
leads through the final intermediate sprint of the day with 34 kilometers left. They breakaway has speeded up a little, as the peloton chases 2’45 behind.
The peloton and
Proximus
won’t let a chance to shine slip today, with 20 kilometers left, they’re only 1’20 behind, having complete control on the 10 attackers.
The breakaway is about to get caught with 12 kilometers left, and
Bol
attacks from the peloton!
9400 meters left, and
Willems
proves the strongest in the breakaway, and he’s off solo.
Venter
Jeandesbosz
La Lavandier
follow closest, while
Bol
has caught
Viennet
going under the 10 kilometer banner. But you can see the peloton behind, they’re in with a determined chase here.
But 7.6 kilometers away from the finishing line, the peloton completely shuts down! The chase is gone, the speed is low, and the riders at the front have no interest in doing the pacing. That’s a surprise!
Willems
is given new motivation to keep going, and so he does! 5700 meters away from the finishing line he leads the peloton with no less than 90 seconds. The 5 chasers are 31 seconds behind him, which he should manage to hold on, as he’s extending the lead as we speak!
Only 3.5 kilometers to go now, and the chasers have
Willems
in sight, but the picture lies a bit. The gap is now 45 seconds, meaning he's extending his lead! You can count the peloton out, they’ve completely stopped to ride, now being 2’15 behind Willems.
Knees
tries to take advantage of the slow bunch with 3200 meters left. It’s far too late for the stage win though,
Willems
and the 5 chasers are out of reach.
Jeandesbosz
starts the sprint 2 kilometers from the line.
La Lavandier
can’t follow his wheel, with 3 others being glued to La Lavandier's rear wheel.
Willems
with only 1000 meters left now, and no one is to be seen behind him! What win he’s heading for!
900 meters to go, and
Bol
Venter
challenges
Jeandesbosz
for second place.
La Lavandier
Viennet
were clearly dead weight in the final kilometers here, as they’re nowhere to be seen now.
Here a critical situation took place for the followers of the race. The camera man crashed, were sent to hospital, and were never seen in Portugal again, therefore there won't be screenshots of the riders arriving the finish line (I must have forgot to take the screenshots I was sure I took. When converting the report to forum format I realized 4 screenshots were missing, the final 4, not a good feeling.)
This means the followers are back to the good old radio for the finish of the stage!
Willems
looks so surprised himself, he doesn’t even celebrate his huge win! That was definitely a big surprise on a stage the peloton seemed to control very well. Congratulations to Willems, taking the chance on offer, and making full use of it.
Bol
wins the sprint for second place, ahead of
Jeandesbosz
Venter
La Lavandier
Viennet
follow some meters behind, in 5th and 6th.
Haedo
leads home the bunch in 7th place, 1’40 behind Willems. What a surprising turn this stage made!
