Volta a Portugal - Stage 11
Smowz
i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/stage11.jpg

We finish with this fairly lengthy hilly Time Trial, where after 10 hard days racing around Portugal three riders are within a minute of each other.

Jose Serpa, Franco Pellizotti and Bernhard Kohl are no mugs against the clock and they are interestingly placed with Pellizotti probably the weakest TTer 33 seconds ahead of middle man Kohl and 55 seconds ahead of Serpa.

Behind that we have another medium level TTer in Siutsou who has a fairly big gap to a large group of riders who will be fighting for the remaining places in the top ten. Van den Broeck, Rohregger and Camano are the pick of the riders in this group and each of them have decent stage win claims.

However early on stage one winner and excellent man against the clock Miles Olman sets some early benchmarks today. Could anyone match the Australian super TTer?

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/1-Olman.jpg
Olman 105th on GC - but great TTer

There are two checks as well as the finishing time here are Olmans:

Olman16.3630.3045.52

We can compare that to other early times set by some other lowly GC placed but good against the watch men.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/2-Threeothergoodtimes.jpg
Hacecky (Cillit Bang), Bertagliati (Youtube) and Mandri (Intesa)

These three 's times then:

Hacecky16.5730.5846.51
Berti16.3830.2946.09
Mandri16.3430.3146.12

None of these three were able to break the 46 minutes barrier like Miles Olman and indeed that 46 minutes looked like the time to aim for over these trick parcours. It was clear that the early part of the course was the place to make up time on the pure Chrono men also.

We began to move deep into the top 50 men as Ortega (Unicredit), Velits (Youtube) and Mercado (Quiksilver) posted their efforts.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/3-OrtegaMercadoandVelits.jpg
Ortega, Velits and Mercado

It has been a funny tour for Unicredit, Jordi Grau has been excellent but Ortega has been very disappointing. Peter Velits has been seen on the front plenty of times riding for his team leader Franco Pellizotti - Velits like his leader has been one of Youtubes 'invisibles' this year. Mercado has been looking after team leader Delgado who will be battling for top ten later.

Ortega16.3830.1445.41
Velits16.3330.2546.00
Mercado16.1930.0445.33

A brilliant and perhaps slightly surprising performance by Mercado as he took the clubhouse lead with 21 riders left to check in with times. Ortega bumps down to second with Olman 3rd and Velits 4th. However there were plenty more GC men who were now looking like breaking that 46 minutes.

First 13th from before Iker Camano some 4.49 back on Pellizotti.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/4-Camano.jpg
Camano has struggled over the mountains but can move up today

Camano16.2030.0845.38

Not quite provisional lead for the Bimbo Nutella rider, but he does overtake his teammate Samwel and move into the final GC top ten as a result of this solid Time Trial. Close to him in the GC was Jurgen Van Den Broeck who started the day 11th, some 4.34 back which was well back on what he would have expected.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/6-VandenBroeck.jpg
The Belgian a victim of team tactics perhaps

Van den Broeck16.1029.5045.13

The Benfica rider romps into the stage lead and deep into the GC top ten with that performance. It would be interesting to compare his times with the next rider Thomas Rohregger who started the day 10th at 4.17 some 17 seconds ahead of the Belgian.

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/7-Rohregger.jpg
Telenor stage racer likes the test against the clock

Rohregger16.2230.0845.38

It did not quite click for the Austrian but nethertheless like Van Den Broeck and Camano he moves into the top ten at the expense of riders like Delgado, Samwel and Lopez Garcia.
Benfica's leader Daniel Moreno slots in between Rohregger and Camano on GC by the end of the day finishing in the end Benfica's 3rd best rider behind Ven den Broeck and eventual GC 5th place Florentino Marquez. They have worked as a team here and will take a stack of CTour points from this race but lacking a bit of prestige. Siutsou sets some decent times on his way to 45.59 and it looks very much as though Van den Broeck will take the stage.

We still had the top podium showdown however:

The Columbian

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/8-Serpa.jpg
Serpa - first check 16.20

The Austrian

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/9-Kohl.jpg
Kohl - first check 16.28

and the Italian

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/ManGame/10-Pellizotti.jpg
Pellizotti - first check 16.24

It becomes pretty clear from the first check that Pellizotti is pretty inspired by the yellow jersey, there is a battle between Serpa and Kohl however.

2nd check
Serpa30.04
Kohl30.21
Pellizotti30.14

Kohl loses 17 of his 22 seconds to Serpa.

By the end then
Serpa45.32
Kohl45.59
Pellizotti45.49

Franco Pellizotti wins the Volta ahead of Jose Serpa who moves ahead of Kohl on the final day with Siutsou and Marquez making up the top five.
