This is about as flat as it gets in the Volta and the sprinter must be gagging for a decent run in, Van Avermart was absent however from the run in yesterday prompting rumours that Bimbo Nutella are more bothered about protecting their GC men.

The relatively weak Vespa youngster Cieran Cassidy managed to take a breakaway win and so six riders went in the break today to try their luck.

Hacecky, Bettini, Veikkanan, Wegelius, Flickinger and Brandle are the break

It is a bit windy today which makes it tough for the break and the peleton alike, there is much discussion as to whether the peleton will chase. No-one seems to have confidence in their sprinters and with 75 to go the gap is 8.30. The magic minute every 10 km barrier is broken and it gets a bit spicy in the break. Up the only climb of the day Flickinger and Hacecky are dropped, that is probably the last chance of a Cillit Bang win from this race!

The climb does offer the peleton a chance to close the ground and Bimbo Nutella decide after all it may be worth giving Van Avermart a punt at the stage finish.

UBS give a helping hand, they have Richeze ready to launch. But up front the experienced Bettini is driving the break on out of the saddle up the climb.

Paulo is rolling back the years once more

What a year Bettini is having, prominent at the Giro winning the Tour of Turkey and now hunting something from a High Category race. He is winning all the primes out there and things are looking even Stephens with about 25 to go. The lead four (Bettini, Veikkanan, Wegelius and Brandle) have 3 minutes on the dropped two (Hacacky, Flickinger) and four minutes on the peleton. The peleton has shed itself of a few sprinters mind you who are looking a bit leggy after nine tough stages.

The windy day has taken its toll on one of the front men and it is Brandle who finds things to tough to follow with about 18km to go.

Brandle ruled out as general Bettini keeps the pace high

Twelve to go then and this lead three put 25 seconds into Brandle and still have 2.25 on the peleton, they could and maybe should now make it. It needs someone to keep the power on and yes that someone is Bettini, now he drops his companions.

IT has been a good rider by the Finnish Telenor man Veikkanan and Falcons british domestique Wegelius but today is all about one man... Bettini takes the stage.

So the other two complete the podium Veikkanan then Wegelius.

Finn then Brit for second and third

Brandle cruises home in 4th and then it is Kozontchuk who surprises the sprinters for 5th ahead of Gatto and Van Avermart.

Kozontchuk leads the peleton home 1.27 down on Bettini

Pellizotti finishes ninth to move into joint custody of the points jersey with Moreno, he is now looking to the final two stages to win this thing!
