Not a lot to shout about until the tricky ending dual climbs of the Guarda at the end of the stage - not dissimilar to the finish used in the Tour de France up to the Mende airstrip. As such it is Franco Pellizotti who is todays outstanding favourite with Bernie Eisel (Bimbo Nutella) favoured over teammate Van Avermart and Delage (Intesa) also being spoken about.

Yesterday did see a big gap open up between 11 riders and the rest with breakaway man Grau taking most of the glory with the stage win, Points jersey and KOM jersey. He is too old for the young riders competition Guerao leads that one for finishing third (Manan was the only other young rider).

So breaks do have a chance here in Portugal though that was partly down you would think to the tricky ending and the protection of Miles Olman yesterdays strange goings on.

A break of five establishes itself today Ulanowski (Ciliit Bang), Wilman (Telenor), Cassidy (Vespa), Betencourt (Quiksilver) and Allonco (Santander).

At the first sprint it is the Telenor rider who takes it over young Betencourt and then Allonca.

With 75km to go the gap is 6.20 and Unicredit are working hard to now check this move, the personal ahead are not that great so it shouldn't be too hard.

Interestingly Sergio Ortega is seen doing some of the pace work, which seems to be a bit of a strange move he may find todays ending difficult.

At the second sprint Vespa's Cassidy takes it over Betencourt and Ulanowski.

What a tough season it has been for Vespa, though they will surely bounce back next year. They will be bouyed by the performance from some of their youngsters that have done some good in breakaways.
Anyway back to the race and you can tell we are in for a finish here as Pellizotti whips his Youtube boys into line.

It is about time that the team nicknamed 'YouTwit' got its act together, up to now they have been mainly known as a breakaway team. For some reason they have been hiding their big guns for a late season push and wild card performances. Make no mistake they are serious about this one though!

The final sprint prim meanwhile is taken by the bridesmaid of the last two Betencourt.

However no chance of the young Columbian repeating his Vuelta a Columbia stage win today as the peleton pulls this back before the first of the dual climbs. This results in some top GC riders attacking for what we assume is the KOM points.

The latter two riders (and not the first two to this writers frustration) push on to make a go of it on the descent before the second go up the Guardia to the finish.

This provokes a big reaction in the peleton as home favourites Benfica scramble their fighter pilots (Nazaret and Petrov) to try and close the gap.

However as the sprint opens up on this climb there is a fairly big gap - Eltink and Pellizotti are pretty nifty sprinters cannot see this being closed down.

It is about 30 or so seconds, not a huge gap but still a problem when you factor in time bonuses as well for Serpa, Kohl etc. Let us not forget about Eltink who has done very well to hold onto the Italian, the Dutchman is no sensationally trying to come around Pellizotti.

Behind the Red Bull man is Adil Jelloul, he is being chased by Lopez Garcia for the third spot.

Eltink falls short in trying to overtake Pellizotti and the Italian takes a win and a good step forward in the ultimate GC battle.

Behind Jelloul fades away as Lopez Garcia takes third 23 seconds back from the lead two with Delage 4th ahead of Van den Broeck.

Jordi Grau finished within the front group to maintain his lead, however Miles Olman, Manan and surprisingly Ortega were dropped in the last two climbs.
