Tour of Eritrea - Stage 3
ember
i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/ct_c1_eritreaetappe3_zps73a5f94a.jpg

Where yesterday’s stage was almost climbing for half of the distance, todays is the direct opposite! 94 kilometers are to be raced, starting at the mountain the riders finished at yesterday a long descent takes them to an intermediate sprint some kilometers before the finishing line. From there it’s flat towards the finish line. This stage really should come down to a sprint.

The bookmaker’s favourites are
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Greipel
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0041_zps171ae4f5.png

You must say it’s quite surprising seeing so many fans at the top of the mountain only to see the riders start the stage! Cycling’s reputation is clearly growing in Eritrea and Africa. It should be a fast stage and you can almost see the riders smiling at the start, looking forward to all the descending today.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0042_zpsc7b7c90e.png

Four riders use the descent to establish themselves as the breakaway of today. The escapees are

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Bystrøm

After 40 kilometers of descending their lead is four minutes with 55 kilometers left to race.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0043_zps05a66940.png

Four minutes were the biggest lead they would get today though, as
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Team WWE
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Hollister
lead the chase with 35 kilometers left. They’re 2’55 behind the four riders up front.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0044_zps83bbf7b9.png

31 kilometers to go and the escapees face a hill! You must wonder if they’ve taken the wrong turn earlier, but no, it’s actually a hill that’s on today’s race map. It’s well hidden though and only a few hundred meters long. The breakaway’s lead is down to 2’15.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0045_zps129c6d93.png

Back in the peloton it’s
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Team WWE
controlling things well on the little hill, perhaps taking it slowly to secure their big sprinter
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Greipel
has fresh legs in today’s sprint?

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0046_zps4f6e6bf2.png

Oh dear,
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Team WWE
was clearly not going slow on the hill! The peloton splits up with 78 riders left behind. The hill combined with some serious crosswinds must take the blame. The most important riders chasing are
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Cataldo
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/csc_zpsbdf7f4ce.png Abal
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Rodas
and stage hunter
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Davis

They find themselves 1’30 behind the front of the peloton only 24 kilometers away from home!

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0047_zpsf2722340.png

The wind has picked up during the stage, and now we see
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Pivovarna Lasko
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Team WWE
giving it everything at the front of the peloton. Though, with 20 kilometers left of racing they’re 1’40 behind the breakaway, but 1’40 ahead of the big group that’s left behind.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0048_zps79f46dc3.png

No interest in the sprint points in the breakaway and
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/bin_zps9ee3c16e.png Bonnin
leads them through. They must fancy their chances as they lead the peloton by 1’15 with 14.7 kilometers to go.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0049_zps9b4fdc1e.png

14 kilometers to go for the group that lost contact after the hill, and
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Vespa-Aprilia Racing
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/hol_zpsfe2f7500.png Hollister
are giving it their maximum to bridge the gap. They are now 1’20 behind.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0050_zps87f162a7.png

The peloton catches the escapees with 7.800 meters to go, and they’ve also been able to distance the chase group with another 40 seconds, as they’re now two minutes ahead of them. Things are not looking good for any of the riders behind.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0051_zps1ad46664.png

4200 meters to go and the sprint trains have formed. In the lead are
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hasanovic
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hansen

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Ferrari

On their left you see Team WWE lining up with
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Jeandesbosz
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Pineau

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Greipel
They’re followed by
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Vasylyuk
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Bozic
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Sohrabi

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0052_zps0d036ed0.png

1500 meters to go and no doubts Pivovarna Lasko had the strongest train!
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hansen
thunders away with
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hutarovich
right on his wheel.

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh498/Hiiam2412/Barclayskenmicro_zps52dc0de5.png Schinker
is the only one alert and able to follow them. It’s a strong tailwind in this sprint, meaning it’s looking great for the Slovenian team.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0053_zps85c64190.png

But what are you doing
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hutarovich?

i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh498/Hiiam2412/Barclayskenmicro_zps52dc0de5.png Schinker
launches his sprint 900 meters away from home while the Belarus only follow
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hansen!

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0054_zps6429a6f4.png

And here comes the other sprinters flying as well! It’s only 800 meters to the finish line, and it’s
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Greipel
moving incredibly fast, closely followed by
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/mti_zps330e0e2d.png Vasylyuk
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Ferrari

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0055_zps6bd75c38.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hutarovich
finally launches his sprint 600 meters from the line, but is it too late?

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Greipel
storms home on the left, while
i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh498/Hiiam2412/Barclayskenmicro_zps52dc0de5.png Schinker
still holds the lead!

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0056_zps5af24da0.png

It’s a three horses race 400 meters from the line with
i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh498/Hiiam2412/Barclayskenmicro_zps52dc0de5.png Schinker
doing remarkably well in the lead, looking for a big win.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0057_zpsb5a56d16.png

But here they come! Only 200 meters left and
i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh498/Hiiam2412/Barclayskenmicro_zps52dc0de5.png Schinker
is clearly fading. Question is if he has done enough, and will the finish line come just in time for him?

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0058_zpsb19cf720.png

Oh boy this is close! We’ll need confirmation from the judges before we can call a winner here.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0059_zps73c5d819.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Hutarovich
wins it by less than a centimeter!
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Greipel
i1248.photobucket.com/albums/hh498/Hiiam2412/Barclayskenmicro_zps52dc0de5.png Schinker
are just behind with the German claiming second place.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/arm_zps60f3d6b6.png Sohrabi
follow some bike lengths behind the top three.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0061_zps0ea25365.png

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/pvl_zps0bcc4e74.png Bozic
can celebrate his team mate’s stage win in ninth place, and there’s also a gap of 16 seconds behind him. We’ll have to wait for the final results to see if the time keepers have recognized it.

i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g401/Mrember/PCM0062_zpsfe18951c.png

The big group of 78 riders are beaten by the stage winner with a massive 4’10. That’s a real disaster for overall contenders like
i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/var_zps06f2aa1f.png Cataldo

who were the only riders in the top 15 to be at the wrong side of the split.
